In trachoma the interaction between chronic chlamydial and acute bacterial conjuntivitis has been suggested as important in determining the severity of disease and, therefore, blindness. We investigated the effect of acute conjunctival infection with each of three common human pathogens, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus aegyptius , and Streptococcus pneumoniae, in a model of trachoma established in cynomolgus monkeys. Nude mice (nu/nu on BALB/cAn background), maintained under conventional conditions, developed an acute moist dermatitis of the nose and occasionally the ears, with heavy contamination with Staphylococcus pyogenes. Only homozygotes over 10 weeks old were affected. Treatment with parenteral ampicillin or oral oxytetracycline was ineffective. Biotype and serotype were determined for 473 isolates of Haemophilus influenzae from 399 children. Patients with invasive disease usually had serotypable (86%) and biotype 1 (80%) isolates. In late summer 1981, a widespread outbreak of acute bacterial conjunctivitis occurred in southeast Georgia, affecting primarily grade-school children. This outbreak was similar to previously described seasonal conjunctivitis in the South. Ninety cases of the neurological manifestations associated with acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis caused by Enterovirus 70 (EV 70) are reported. A new qualitative test for the study of conjunctival mucus has been developed. Conjunctival scrapings were obtained from 196 patients. Microscopic mucus ferning (arborization) was observed in 148 (91%) patients with various forms of acute conjunctivitis. An epidemic of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in 416 (10.8%) of 3,830 staff and students of the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, India, during September-December 1979 was studied. We utilized enzyme immunoassay and tissue culture techniques to evaluate prospectively the role of ET Ad in diarrhea occurring in hospitalized infants. Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare, usually bilateral, chronic membranous conjunctivitis, which begins acutely in childhood and persists for many years. In view of the poor results obtained with other forms of therapy in the past, the resection of the involved conjunctiva and tarsus with the grafting of donor sclera is offered as another alternative in the management of this distressing condition.

The ocular disease distribution and causes of blindness in the Navajo Indians are discussed. Trauma, usually associated with alcohol ingestion, is the most common cause of monocular blindness. A case is described in which the rubber cap of a vial containing Brucella abortus vaccine came off accidentally and some of the contents splashed in the eyes of a veterinarian.
