Seventeen patients with acute leukaemia refractory to conventional chemotherapeutic agents were treated with the adenosine deaminase inhibitor, 2'-deoxycoformycin (dCF). Of the twelve patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia of the thymic phenotype (Thy-ALL), seven went into complete remission after one or two courses of therapy. Two other (Thy-ALL) patients showed good partial response, and three were resistant to dCF. The five patients with acute leukaemia of other phenotypes had progression of disease despite treatment with dCF. Response to dCF can be predicted from the pattern of change

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) was produced in 6 adult rhesus monkeys. All the animals developed acute EAE. Optic neuritis developed in all eyes. A vasculo-occlusive retinopathy was seen in five of the 12 eyes. Conjunctivitis and iridocyclitis were seen in some eyes. The available evidence indicates that the retinopathy is secondary to the optic nerve changes and represents central retinal vein occlusion by intraneural compression. Histopathologic studies revealed no evidence of inflammatory infiltration in the retina or around the retinal vessels.

We report the levels of coxsackievirus type A24 (CA24) and the levels and type of interferon produced early during naturally acquired picornavirus epidemic conjunctivitis. Fifty-seven patients with arthritis associated with non-gonococcal genital infection have been studied. Synovitis characteristically affected one or a few joints, expecially the knee, ankle or metatarsophalangeal joints and was accompanied by tenosynovitis and enthesopathies--each in about one third of the patients. A quarter of the patients had ocular, cutaneous, or mucous membrane lesions (Reiter's syndrome). In the years 1910/13 two endemic infections of the conjunctiva were found in Samoa in addition to ocular manifestations of filiariosis. One of these infections was obviously trachoma, the other an acute micrococcus catarrhalis conjunctivitis by diplococcus samoensis.

Monkey kidney cells infected with the J 670/71 strain of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) virus in the presence of actinomycin D synthesized two species of viral RNA. One species had properties similar to the virion RNA, sedimented in a sucrose gradient with a sedimentation coefficient of 34S, and was sensitive to RNase. The other species sedimented at 18S and was resistant to RNase. The inability of AHC virus to replicate at 39 degrees was attributed to a lack of virus-specific RNA synthesis in infected cells.

Six cases of bacteremia associated with genitourinary (GU) tract infections in adults due to Haemophilus influenzae occurred during a 42-month period at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Canada. An extensive outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) occurred from September to December 1974 in Thailand. At least 29 patients with polio-like motor paralysis that complicated AHC were hospitalized in Bangkok. Four children with acute febrile mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (MLNS) were hospitalized in Denver over a two-year period. Intal drops (sodium cromoglycate) relieved symptoms of vernal conjunctivitis in all the 19 patients we studied, reducing the need for steroids although the response varied. Intal was also effective in all 11 patients with acute or subacute seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, but in only 4 of 11 patients with mild chronic conjunctivitis associated with atopy. No side-effects were noted other than mild irritation in some cases.
