The owl monkey, Aotus trivirgatus, in contrast to other species of nonhuman primates, was shown to be susceptable to infection with strains of Chlamydia trachomatis. It responded to experimental infection with a severe, acute, inflammatory reaction of short duration. Monkeys which recovered from infection were resistant to reinfection for more than 6 months and resistance was not strain specific. Eye secretion antibody titers correlated well with resistance to subsequent challenge. Acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC), a novel disease caused with a new type of enterovirus, occurred for the first time in Sapporo City and other areas of Hokkaido in October of 1971. During first 4 months, 1,000 or more cases of AHC were reported in Sapporo and 2,300 cases in other areas. A case of acute, severe allergic conjunctivitis is reported in a biochemist who had been grinding Bandeiraea simplicifolia, the source of an anti-B lectin. A crude extract of these beans produced immediate-type skin test reactivity, and reaginic antibodies were demonstrated in her serum. Several other examples of occupationally induced allergy in laboratory and research workers in the field of allergy-immunology are briefly cited. Exposure to potential allergens in a dry, powdered form seems particularly hazardous.

Seven representative isolates from six outbreaks of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis were shown to have the characteristics of enteroviruses. Two viruses differed from the remaining five isolates in producing paralysis in suckling mice and being resistant to 2-hydroxybenzyl-benzimidazole. In a remote area of Rhodesia, 4051 rural Africans were examined. Emphasis was placed on examination of the eye although attention was also devoted to any other complaints. The main finding was of a follicular conjunctivitis, two-thirds of these cases being judged to be due to trachoma. An infant developed acute conjunctivitis 7 days after birth. Smears of the mucopurulent discharge contained many typical elementary-body inclusions. From conjunctival scrapings a virus resembling trachoma was grown in eggs. When instilled into monkey eyes, it produced an acute conjuctivitis resembling the human disease. Nine other patients with inclusion conjunctivitis of similar intensity failed to yield viruses.

Most penetrating or lacerating injuries of the eye in children justify examination under anesthesia to avoid further harm to an uncooperative patient. The pediatrician in doubt should merely apply a sterile dressing and have an ophthalmologist examine the injury in hospital. Nonperforating injuries may result in severe bleeding 48 to 72 hours later; this may be averted by bandaging the eyes and maintaining rest for four or five days. The author points out that while previously only follicular conjunctivitis of the inclusion or swimming-pool type, and of the Béal type, was classified as "acute follicular conjunctivitis", it is now necessary to enlarge this group to include at least four other clinical or etiological entities: epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, acute herpetic keratoconjunctivitis, Newcastle disease conjunctivitis, and pharyngoconjunctival fever. The author then defines and describes chronic follicular conjunctivitis, toxic follicular conjunctivitis (molluscum contagiosum) and folliculosis.
