[Allergic and immunopathological diseases of the ocular surface].

Allergic and immunopathological diseases of the ocular surface are inflammations that can occur with mild to severe symptoms that cause visual impairment. Allergic inflammations mainly affect the conjunctiva, causing acute and/or chronic conjunctivitis. Several forms are distinguished: seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, contact allergy, giant papillary conjunctivitis. The most common is the seasonal form, which is linked to seasons. Allergic ocular surface processes require local treatment with artificial tears, anti-allergic eye drops. If com

Bilateral, chronic, bacterial conjunctivitis in giant fornix syndrome.

Giant fornix syndrome (GFS) results in chronic, relapsing conjunctivitis in elderly patients with enophthalmos and enlarged fornices, in which infectious material collects and perpetuates inflammation. A 98-year-old woman presented with persistent, bilateral, purulent conjunctivitis; corneal epithelial defects and progressive blepharospasm that did not respond to artificial tears, topical antibiotics and steroids and amniotic membrane grafts. Additional findings of deep-set orbits with enlarged upper fornices were diagnostic of GFS. Over the next 2 months, she responded to a combination of top

Mucus fishing syndrome.

Mucus fishing syndrome is a chronic inflammatory ocular surface condition characterised by repetitive self-extraction of mucous strands from the eye.A man in his 30s presented with bilateral ocular redness, itch, irritation, tearing and sticky mucoid discharge for 3 months. Examination disclosed bilateral bulbar and tarsal conjunctival injection. Fluorescein staining disclosed a well-circumscribed area of tarsal conjunctival epithelial defect near the inferior lacrimal punctum in both eyes. The patient admitted to a habit of mechanically removing mucus from his eyes several times a day. Demons

Ligneous Conjunctivitis Secondary to Viral Conjunctivitis.

Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare cause of chronic conjunctivitis that may be triggered by ocular insults such as trauma or infections. We present an interesting case of ligneous conjunctivitis caused by a viral infection that responded well to conservative management. Topical cyclosporine and heparin are a good treatment regimen that caused resolution of lesions and prevented recurrences.

Floppy Eyelid Syndrome: an Overlooked Comorbidity Among Bariatric Patients.

PURPOSE: Floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) is a clinical entity characterized by palpebral hyperlaxity and chronic conjunctivitis. Patients' eyelids evert ("flip inside out"), leading to eye irritation, dryness, grittiness, and tearing. More severe cases can lead to significant ocular complications, such as keratoconus and impaired eyesight. Research has revealed an association between FES and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). OSAS is also one of the most common comorbidities among patients with obesity and an indication for bariatric surgery. This is one of the first studies to explore FES

Symblepharon, Ankyloblepharon, and Salt Gland Dysfunction in a Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta).

Adhesions involving the bulbar and the palpebral conjunctiva (Symblepharon) may interfere with tear drainage, cause chronic conjunctivitis, and reduce ocular motility. This condition may be associated with adhesion of the edges of the upper and lower eyelids (ankyloblepharon). The present case describes bilateral symblepharon, ankyloblepharon and salt gland dysfunction in a juvenile Caretta caretta. The loggerhead presented both eyelids swollen, ulcerated, and not separable when rescued. Eye examination was not possible, but ultrasonography showed right bulbar integrity, while the left eye was

Treatment of ligneous conjunctivitis with fresh frozen plasm in twin babies.

Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare form of chronic conjunctivitis. Mostly seen in childhood, it is characterized by the formation of fibrin-rich pseudomembranes in the tarsal conjunctiva. Plasminogen deficiency plays an important role in its etiology. There is no standart treatment protocol for managing this challenging condition, which can, with corneal involvement, lead to blindness. We present twin babies with ligneous conjunctivitis managed with fresh frozen plasma, topical heparin, and topical cyclosporine, without surgical excision of membranes.

[Pathogenetic and clinical aspects of floppy eyelid syndrome].

Floppy eyelid syndrome is rarely diagnosed nowadays. Most patients remain without the correct diagnosis for a long time, which means they do not receive adequate treatment. This syndrome is known to be accompanied by many concomitant clinical manifestations complicating the diagnostic search. It should be included in the diagnostic search algorithm in patients with chronic conjunctivitis, abnormal eyelid position, point keratopathy. This review presents the modern understanding of characteristic clinical features, associated conditions, as well as information about the pathogenesis of this syn

Chronic Early-Stage Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid.

Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) represents an insidious, autoimmune-mediated disease of the conjunctiva, initially presenting as chronic conjunctivitis and progressing to fibrosis, cicatrization, and eventually blindness secondary to corneal keratinization. This series reports 3 cases presenting with chronic conjunctivitis lasting an average of 10 years without cicatrix formation, ultimately diagnosed as OCP based on direct immunofluorescence of conjunctival biopsy samples. This chronic conjunctivitis without fibrosis suggests the possibility of an OCP subtype with a prolonged early stage

Risk factors for the progression of trachomatous scarring in a cohort of women in a trachoma low endemic district in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma, a chronic conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Trachoma has been targeted for elimination as a public health problem which includes reducing trachomatous inflammation-follicular prevalence in children and reducing trachomatous trichiasis prevalence in adults. The rate of development of trachomatous trichiasis, the potentially blinding late-stage trachoma sequelae, depends on the rate of trachomatous scarring development and progression. Few studies to date have evaluated the progression of trachomatous sca

RNR inhibitor binding studies of Chlamydia felis: insights from in silico molecular modeling, docking, and simulation studies.

Chlamydia felis is the primary cause of chronic conjunctivitis without respiratory infections in cats, making conjunctiva as its primary target. It is a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium that cannot survive outside the host cell. C. felis can be found worldwide and its zoonotic potential is a known phenomenon. The scope of zoonoses, its scale, and their impact experiencing today has no historical precedence. Among the identified 1415 human pathogens 868 have a zoonotic origin making it to 61%. Although with appropriate drug administration there are instances of re-occurrence of ch
