Insight into behavior of epithelial cells of the feline conjunctiva in chronic conjunctivitis as a possible limitation in detection of Chlamydophila spp.

The aims of this work was documentation of the reactivity of feline conjunctival epithelial cells in chronic conjunctivitis and the investigation of a possible correlation of histological findings in conjunctiva with a limitation in detection of the pathogen. In this observational study, conjunctival swab samples collected from six cats suffering from chronic conjunctivitis were monitored for Chlamydophila spp. infection for one month, every ten days. Chlamydophilosis was diagnosed by conventional PCR, and confirmed by sequencing analysis. A lack of coherence with results in subsequent studies

Increased prevalence of growth hormone deficiency in patients with vernal keratoconjuntivitis; an interesting new association.

INTRODUCTION: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic conjunctivitis that mainly affects children living in temperate areas. The notable difference between genders and VKC's resolution with puberty have persistently suggested a role of hormonal factors in VKC development. OBJECTIVE: To describe six cases of males with VKC and growth hormone deficiency (GHD) reported as a long-term follow-up during rhGH treatment. METHODS: Six consecutive male patients (median age at GHD diagnosis 9.7, range 7.9 to 13.1 years) with VKC, were recruited from July 2005 to July 2013 at the Paediatric Endoc

Usefulness of local postoperative care after laser dacryocystorhinostomy.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Epiphora caused by nasolacrimal drainage system obstruction is the main indication for dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). So are chronic conjunctivitis and dacryocystitis from the same origin. Nasal endoscopy and the introduction of laser assisted DCR have facilitated the performance of the technique. However, it requires complex and expensive equipment, so there are still supporters of the traditional external procedure. The aim of this work was to study the effectiveness and usefulness of local postoperative care in laser DCR final result. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We stu

[Follicular conjunctivitis of unknown origin].

A 40-year-old female chemical laboratory assistant presented at our clinic with chronic conjunctivitis of 4 years' standing. We initially misdiagnosed her symptoms as giant papillary conjunctivitis. Topical treatment failed to produce an improvement and a biopsy was performed. Histopathological analysis showed bilateral follicular lymphoma, a subtype of the B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The patient was referred for radiotherapy. At follow-up 18 months later the patient was symptom-free.

Chronic conjunctivitis related to phthiriasis palpebrarum.

We describe a case of chronic conjunctivitis related to phthiriasis palpebrarum. A 36 year-old female presented with gradual pruritus and painless ocular hyperaemia over the previous 3 months. On examination, nasal pterygium, conjunctival hyperaemia, oedema, and mild hypertrophy of the palpebral margin were observed. A slit-lamp examination revealed numerous creamy oval structures approximately 1 mm in diameter localised in the middle area of the lashes, and bloody crusts and a semi-transparent deposit were present in the superior palpebral margin. Based on the observation of numerous nits at

Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid masquerading as chronic conjunctivitis: a case report.

Conjunctivitis is often considered an innocuous condition which is self-limiting. This report describes misdiagnosis of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid as chronic conjunctivitis. Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid is a rare autoimmune condition. The clinical features which are useful to distinguish this condition from infective conjunctivitis are discussed. The investigation and treatment of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid is discussed. It is important to recognize nonocular symptoms and signs that may indicate the presence of a more serious underlying pathological condition necessitating specialized o

[Treatment of eye allergies].

Seasonal atopic conjunctivitis is treated with antihistamines, cromoglycate and short courses of corticosteroids, in severe cases with subcutaneous or sublingual immunotherapy. Chronic conjunctivitis requires year-round treatment with mast cell stabilizers, antihistamines or topical corticosteroids. Long-term treatment of atopic blepharoconjunctivitis consists of tacrolimus or pimecrolimus cream. For atopic keratoconjunctivitis corticosteroid and, if necessary, cyclosporine eye drops are needed. First-line therapy of vernal conjunctivitis involves mast cell stabilizers and, if necessary, corti

Trachoma and antibiotic use: the 'A' in SAFE.

Trachoma, a chronic conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. In recognition of this public health problem, the World Health Assembly has targeted the year 2020 to eliminate blinding trachoma, and a multifaceted strategy (SAFE) is recommended, including antibiotics for treatment of infection. Trachoma is a disease of entire communities, and the pool of infection resides largely in preschool age children. Thus, for endemic communities, mass treatment with antibiotics annually for at least 3-5 years is carried out. The antibiotics use

[Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in adults with chronic conjunctivitis in Nisava district].

INTRODUCTION: Chlamydia trachomatis causes many infections, including eye infections. They manifest as inclusion conjunctivitis and trachoma. The agent is transmitted by dirty hands, eyeliners, medical instruments and via swimming-pool water or, in neonates, by passage through an infected birth canal. Due to the nonspecific clinical features at the beginning of the infection and delayed application of symptomatic, anti-allergic and non-specific antibiotic therapy, Chlamydia aetiology is usually established only after laboratory diagnosis in the chronic stage of infection. OBJECTIVE: Determini
