Real-time PCR detection of Mycoplasma felis in domestic cats suffering from chronic conjunctivitis (Poland).

Real-time PCR directed to intergenic spacer (IGS) noncoding region between 16S and 23S rRNA genes was used for species specific detection of Mycoplasma felis in conjunctival scrapings. Samples were collected from 57 cats suffering from chronic conjunctivitis in 2008-2010 (Wrocław, Poland). Samples from 36 cats (63.2%) were shown to be positive for Mycoplasma felis. Our research gives a first insight in the occurrence of Mycoplasma felis among domestic cats in Poland suggesting that this pathogen may constitute an underestimated cause of chronic conjunctivitis.

Involutional entropion and ectropion of the lower eyelid: prevalence and associated risk factors in the elderly population.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of involutional entropion and ectropion of the lower eyelid in the elderly population; to examine how these disorders are related to gender, age, skin color, and axial ocular globe projection; and to define the incidence of associated ocular surface and pathologic eyelid findings. METHODS: An ophthalmic survey was conducted in 24,565 elderly people. All participants underwent ophthalmic examination by general ophthalmologists to identify entropion and ectropion. Information about associated ocular surface and pathologic eyelid findings were collected from

[Challenge and treatment strategy for ocular surface damage in patients with long term use of antiglaucoma drugs].

Long term use of topical anti-glaucoma drugs has been shown to induce chronic conjunctivitis, superficial punctate keratitis (SPK) and dry eye symptom. Under these conditions, a loss of goblet cells in conjunctiva, epithelial squamous metaplasia and apoptosis were morphologically revealed. Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC), a most frequently used preservative in eye drops, has been found to be an important factor causing ocular surface damage. Furthermore, a big challenge for ophthalmologists is that toxic damage of medication to ocular surface tissues is mild, poor specificity, and delayed manifest

Factitious pseudo-membranous conjunctivitis in an adolescent boy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ocular factitious lesions involving the conjunctiva alone represent a challenging diagnosis for the ophthalmologist; corneal integrity, in fact, allows maintenance of good visual acuity and precludes the pain subsequent to trigeminal stimulation. Conjunctival biopsy is crucial to make a diagnosis and to focus on possible peculiarities in the patient's behavior. A psychiatrist has to confirm the diagnosis. In this case report, images of a bilateral pseudo-membranous conjunctivitis sparing the cornea in an anorexic adolescent boy are shown. METHODS: Photographically documented

Chlamydophila felis in cats--are the stray cats dangerous source of infection?

Chlamydophila felis is a causative agent of acute or chronic conjunctivitis, and pneumonia in cats. Natural transmission mostly occurs consequently to close contact with other infected cats, their aerosol and fomites. We have examined 93 cats with symptoms of acute or chronic conjunctivitis, from Košice region in Slovakia, during the period of 2 years. Conjunctival samples were obtained from 55 domestic cats (59.14%) and 38 stray cats (40.86%). Of the total number of 93 examined animals, 42 cats were positive, which represents 45.16% overall positivity. Out of the 42 positive cats, 25 cats wer

A case of recurrent bloody tears.

Well-known causes of blood-tinged epiphora are conjunctival lesions, tumors of the lacrimal apparatus, and systemic bleeding disorders. We describe an unusual patient who presented with recurrent episodes of bloody tearing which began following an erythema multiforme-like drug eruption. He experienced chronic conjunctivitis which resulted in a few minor symblephara. One year later, the patient developed attacks of bloody tearing. All clinical, radiologic, and laboratory investigations related to bloody epiphora were within normal limits except for a mild, nonspecific chronic inflammatory react

[Chronic suppurative canaliculitis - clinical and therapeutic aspects: report of 3 cases].

Lacrimal canaliculitis is a rare disease caused mainly by Actinomyces israelii. It should be regarded as a differential diagnosis of recurrent chronic conjunctivitis. The purpose of this study was to report 3 cases of chronic suppurative canaliculitis and different treatment options. The first patient presented with an upper left canaliculitis and was treated with a canaliculotomy. Nevertheless, he had an ipsilateral lower canaliculitis after 6 months and underwent intracanalicular injections of fortified cefazolin with complete remission. The second patient presented with a lower left canalic

Immunohistochemical differences between normal and chronically inflamed conjunctiva: diagnostic features.

PURPOSE: There is widespread misinterpretation of normal conjunctival fibrinogen. In differentiating between normal conjunctiva and cicatrizing conjunctivitis, including ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and lichen planus, it is important to properly evaluate and characterize the histologic appearance of the structures seen and not base a diagnosis on just the presence or absence of certain features. One feature of conjunctival histology prone to misinterpretation and misdiagnosis is the presence of subepithelial fibrinogen, particularly when the diagnosis of lichen p

Lacrimal gland ductulitis caused by probable Actinomyces infection.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics and management of a group of patients who had chronic mucopurulent conjunctivitis that was probably due to Actinomyces infection of the lacrimal gland ductules. DESIGN: A retrospective, interventional case series. PARTICIPANTS: Seven patients (2 male; 29%) between 34 and 52 years of age (mean, 48.7 years; median, 49 years) who presented to the lacrimal clinic. INTERVENTION: Surgical excision of the infective focus (6 cases) or fenestration and expression of infective debris (1 case) from the affected lacrimal gland ductule--typically the m

Geographic variation and environmental conditions as cofactors in Chlamydia psittaci association with ocular adnexal lymphomas: a comparison between Italian and African samples.

A particular extra-nodal lymphoma type arises from B cells of the marginal zone (MZ) of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). The aetiology of MZ lymphomas suggests that they are associated with chronic antigenic stimulation by microbial pathogens, among which Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric MALT lymphoma is the best studied. Recently, MALT lymphomas have been described in the context of chronic conjunctivitis, which can be associated with Chlamydia spp. infection. Studies from Italy showed the presence of Chlamydia psittaci in 87% of ocular adnexal lymphomas (OAL), and C. psittaci

A unique case of dermolipoma located in the lower eyelid.

A 16-year-old healthy girl was referred to the authors' clinic for a palpable mass in her right lower eyelid. The patient was treated under the initial diagnosis of chronic conjunctivitis and ectopic cilia in the medial part of her right lower eyelid at a local clinic for 1 year. A soft, nontender, 2.0 x 1.5 x 1.0-cm elliptical mass was palpable in the medial aspect of the patient's right lower eyelid. The medial part of the palpebral conjunctival surface was covered by keratinized epithelium with fine hairs. Histologic findings were consistent with a dermolipoma. The authors describe a very r

Bilateral conjunctival MALT lymphoma mimicking chronic conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of conjunctival lymphoid tu-mors is straightforward when they present with a characteristic salmon-pink, pebbly, multinodular appearance. However, rarely a diffuse clinical presentation is encountered, and this may mimic chronic conjunctivitis of other etiologies. CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old man was referred to our clinic with bilateral conjunctival masses in May 2005. With the assumption of chlamydial conjunctivitis, without microbiological or histopathological evidence, tetracycline ointment and oral doxycycline 100 mg twice daily were prescribed. Although a partial

Ocular complications of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

The causative factors and ocular complications of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis are reported here. Six out of seven patients developed the syndrome secondary to ingestion of sulphadoxine/pyrimethamine while one developed it as a complication of HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy). The ocular complications were ankyloblepharon, symblepharon, chronic conjunctivitis, corneal vascularization and conjunctivalization, and blindness. One patient died. A shift to the WHO-recommened artemisin-based combination therapy for the treatment of malaria is advised. Early ref

[Cicatricial conjunctivitis].

Cicatricial conjunctivitis is chronic conjunctivitis with conjunctival fibrosis and may lead to alterations of conjunctival architecture, which are potentially sight-threatening. The patient's medical history, physical exam, and laboratory tests often provide the diagnosis of the underlying disease. Causes of conjunctival cicatrization are autoimmune diseases such as ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, thermal and chemical burns, postinfectious conjunctivitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, etc. Medical management varies according to specific causes and may lead to severe side effects. Furthermore, stra

Feline herpesvirus 1 and Chlamydophila felis prevalence in cats with chronic conjunctivitis.

The prevalence of Chlamydophila felis and Feline Herpesvirus type 1 was investigated in 30 cats with chronic conjunctivitis, with use of conjunctival swabs and conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In cats with chronic conjunctivitis the DNA of C. felis and FHV-1 was detected in 2 of 30 cats (6.7%) and in 10 of 30 animals (33.3%), respectively. One case of FHV-1 DNA, and none of C. felis was found in control group. There was no case of co-infection with both pathogens.

Using CF0218-ELISA to distinguish Chlamydophila felis-infected cats from vaccinated and uninfected domestic cats.

Chlamydophila felis is a causative agent of acute and chronic conjunctivitis and pneumonia in cats. Cats can be vaccinated with killed or attenuated C. felis. However, current serodiagnostics cannot distinguish these cats from naturally infected cats. This causes difficulty of early diagnosis and seroepidemiological survey for C. felis. We previously reported that C. felis CF0218 can be used as a C. felis-infection-specific diagnostic antigen in experimentally infected and/or vaccinated cats. In this study, we evaluated an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using recombinant CF0218 as antigen (

Iatrogenic glaucoma therapy failure: the adverse effects of topical antiglaucoma medication treatment outcome.

Glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that share a characteristic pattern of deterioration of the optic nerve, is a leading cause of blindness internationally. The treatment options for this optic neuropathy continue to remain limited considering that patients may become refractory to either medical therapy or surgical intervention. The initial treatment of choice for most ophthalmologists is topical medical therapy. The goal of medical therapy is to reduce the intraocular pressures in an effort to either halt or slow the progressive deterioration of the optic nerve. However, topical therapy cause
