Genome-Wide Association Study of Pterygium Versus Pinguecula Identifies Loci Associated with Lesion-Type Divergence.

PURPOSE: Both pterygium and pinguecula are ocular surface lesions associated with shared environmental risk factors, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. However, most pingueculae do not progress to pterygium, and while prior genetic studies suggest a genetic contribution to pterygium susceptibility, the difficulty of controlling for shared UV exposure has been a limiting factor. Here, we use array-based data and whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based data from the multiancestry All of Us Research Platform to perform a case-case genome-wide association study directly comparing individua

Exploring the Role of tRNA-Derived Fragments in Pterygium: Molecular Insights into tsRNA-Mediated Fibroblast Regulation and Disease Progression.

BACKGROUND: Pterygium is a common ocular surface disorder characterized by fibrovascular overgrowth, with recurrence remaining a major clinical challenge. While non-coding RNAs have been implicated in pterygium pathogenesis, the role of tRNA- derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) remains unexplored. METHODS: We performed small RNA sequencing on pterygium and adjacent normal conjunctiva tissues to profile tsRNA expression. Differentially expressed tsRNAs were validated using qRT-PCR, and their biological functions were investigated via cell proliferation and wound healing assays in human pterygium fibro

A Retrospective Review of Glueless, Sutureless Pterygium Excision Using Biovance Triple-Layer Decellularized Amniotic Basement Membrane Tissue.

INTRODUCTION: A retrospective analysis was performed to determine if a glueless, sutureless surgical technique utilizing a triple-layer dehydrated, decellularized amniotic basement membrane tissue, combined with short exposure to mitomycin‑C (MMC), can reduce recurrence and complications after pterygium surgery. Surgical excision remains the mainstay of treatment when symptoms such as vision impairment, foreign body sensation, or cosmetic concerns arise. Wide variation in recurrence rates reflects differences in patient populations, follow-up duration, surgical technique nuances, and definitio

miR-381-3p suppresses pterygium progression by regulating HACE1/TRIP12-mediated ubiquitin-degradation of MCPIP1.

Pterygium syndrome is a common eye disease that often leads to vision loss and even blindness. There is increasing evidence that miRNAs play a key role in the progression of pterygium, but the function of miR-381-3p in pterygium has not been studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of miR-381-3p on the progression of pterygium and to elucidate its potential molecular mechanisms. Human pterygium fibroblasts (HPFs) were isolated from clinical pterygium tissues. The expression of key genes and proteins was detected via RT-qPCR and western blotting. Cell proliferation was det
