TUT7-Mediated Uridine Degradation of MCPIP1 in the Pterygium to Regulate TRAF6-Mediated Autophagy.

PURPOSE: Pterygium is a prevalent ocular disorder characterized by the proliferation of fibrovascular tissue beneath the conjunctiva. The precise role of monocyte chemotactic protein-induced protein 1 (MCPIP1) in the pterygium remains elusive. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and quantitative RT-PCR were used to analyze the expression of MCPIP1 and other regulators. The role of MCPIP1 in pterygium fibrosis was assessed both in vitro and in vivo. Further, Co-immunoprecipitation and ubiquitination assays were performed to investigate the impact of MCPIP1 on the TRAF6-BECN1 signaling

Potential Role of Malassezia restricta in Pterygium Development.

Pterygium is a condition affecting the ocular surface, marked by a triangular-shaped growth of fibrotic tissue extending from the nasal conjunctiva toward the corneal center, potentially causing visual impairment. While ultraviolet (UV )light exposure is the primary risk factor for pterygium, its underlying cause remains unclear. In order to better understand the true genesis of pterygium development, we investigated pterygium tissue and compared it with healthy conjunctiva controls. Given the eye's direct environmental exposure, we analyzed the microbiota composition using metagenomic sequenc

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia: Growth, diagnosis, and treatment.

BackgroundOcular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) is the most common malignancy of the ocular surface, often presenting as a non-pigmented lesion with atypical squamous epithelialization. It is usually asymptomatic and can be confused with benign conditions such as pterygium or conjunctival cysts. If untreated, OSSN may progress to invasive squamous cell carcinoma, causing vision loss or metastasis. The gold standard for diagnosing OSSN is histopathological examination after tumor resection. However, there are still unresolved issues in the clinical management of treatment.Main textIn this re

Modified "Posterior Cervical Lift" Correction of Webbed Neck Deformity.

Pterygium colli (webbed neck) is a rare congenital deformity that continues to pose reconstructive challenges for the plastic surgeon. The primary goal of surgical management is to create a harmonious cervical profile while restoring the natural hairline. Various techniques have been proposed to correct this deformity; however, the majority of them are associated with recurrence of the web or hypertrophic scarring. A technique similar to the "posterior cervical lift" by Chatput et al has been adopted at the authors' institution for the management of pterygium colli. In its original description

Temperature as a Key Modulator: Investigating Phosphorylation Patterns of p.Asn666 PDGFRB Variants and Their Role in Downstream Signaling.

Four different amino acid substitutions have been reported at the p.Asn666 position in platelet-derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRβ): p.Asn666Lys, p.Asn666Tyr, p.Asn666Ser, and p.Asn666His. All four substitutions result in strikingly different phenotypes, ranging from somatic infantile myofibromatosis in p.Asn666Lys and ocular pterygium-digital keloid dysplasia in p.Asn666Tyr to a severe form of Penttinen syndrome in p.Asn666Ser, while p.Asn666His is associated with a complex phenotype characterized by debilitating hand and foot contractures and facial coarseness. Here, we show that the p

The evolving genetic landscape of neuromuscular fetal akinesias.

Fetal akinesia is a broad term used to describe absent (or reduced, fetal hypokinesia) fetal movements, and it can be detected as early as the first trimester. Depending on the developmental age of onset, anything that interferes or limits the normal in utero movement results in a range of deformations affecting multiple organs and organ systems. Arthrogryposis, also termed arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), is a definitive terminology for multiple congenital contractures, with two major subgroups; amyoplasia and distal arthrogryposis (DA). The spectrum includes fetal akinesia deformati

Epithelial Ingrowth Following Pterygium Excision With Conjunctival Autograft: A Rare Complication.

Pterygium is a common ocular condition characterized by a conjunctival growth over the cornea. Epithelial ingrowth (EI), a rare complication of ocular surgery, involves the proliferation of epithelial cells within the cornea or the anterior chamber. We report a case of EI in a male patient following pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograft. Slit lamp examination revealed a thin, grey-white, wave-like band beneath the corneal epithelium in the inferior-temporal quadrant, outside the visual axis and not crossing the corneal center. The diagnosis of epithelial ingrowth was made clinically an

The Potential Role of Vitamin D in the Pterygium Pathophysiology-A Possible New Therapeutic Perspective and Narrative Review.

Vitamin D plays a vital role in human physiology, including a crucial role in regulating bone metabolism and various extra-skeletal effects. Calcitriol exerts anti-inflammatory effects on monocytes and macrophages by increasing IL-10 production and decreasing the production of proinflammatory IL-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand (RANKL), and cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2). In addition, calcitriol also exerts important effects on adaptive immunity by downregulating MHC-II class and co-stimulatory molecules on antigen-presenting cells, but
