Pigmented Curvularia Keratitis Adjacent to a Bifid Pterygium: A Case Report.

Fungal keratitis remains a major cause of corneal morbidity in the tropics, with dematiaceous fungi such as Curvularia representing an important subset. We report a case of Curvularia keratitis in a 55-year-old woman who presented with post-traumatic keratitis and prior use of topical corticosteroids. Examination revealed a bifid pterygium and a grayish-white stromal infiltrate with feathery margins located just anterior to the pterygium head. KOH mount and culture confirmed Curvularia species. The patient responded well to topical natamycin. This case underscores the importance of initiating

Are Ocular Markers of Sun Exposure Associated With Skin Cancer? A Cross-Sectional Analysis of the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study.

BACKGROUND: Higher past sun or ultraviolet radiation exposure increases the risk of skin cancer and three common ocular findings: pterygium, conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence (CUVAF) and myopia. We investigated whether ocular markers of past sun exposure are associated with a history of skin cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of participants who attended the Phase 2 examination of the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study in Western Australia (2016-2022). Myopia was determined from autorefraction and pterygium and CUVAF from photographs of the anterior eye. Past diagnosis of a skin can

Tear Film Changes Following Anterior Segment Surgery: A Comprehensive Review of Pathophysiology, Clinical Features, and Recovery Time Course.

Tear film instability and dry eye disease (DED) are among the most common postoperative complaints after anterior segment surgery. Cataract surgery, corneal refractive procedures, keratoplasty, glaucoma filtration surgery, and pterygium excision can all disrupt ocular surface homeostasis through mechanisms that include corneal denervation, inflammation, goblet cell loss, and meibomian gland dysfunction. The severity and duration of postoperative dry eye vary substantially according to the surgical procedure performed. This review summarises current evidence on the pathophysiology, clinical man

Reconsidering pterygium in the context of focal limbal stem cell dysfunction.

Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) is traditionally regarded as a rare ocular surface disorder characterised by impaired corneal epithelial regeneration. Emerging evidence suggests that pterygium, a common fibrovascular lesion extending onto the cornea, may involve focal limbal epithelial or niche dysfunction. This narrative review examines clinical, histopathological and biological evidence relevant to the relationship between pterygium and focal limbal dysfunction. The peripheral light focusing hypothesis provides a biologically plausible explanation for the characteristic nasal predilection

Association of Cyclin Dependent Kinase Inhibitor 1A Genotypes With Pterygium Susceptibility, Age, and Sex.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pterygium is a chronic fibrovascular ocular surface disorder with multifactorial etiology involving environmental and genetic factors. Given the tumor-like characteristics of pterygium, the cell cycle regulator cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 1A (CDKN1A) has been proposed as a potential contributor. This study aimed to investigate the association between CDKN1A rs1801270 and rs1059234 polymorphisms and pterygium susceptibility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The distributions of genotypic patterns of CDKN1A rs1801270 and rs1059234 among 160 pterygium cases and 320 controls were dete

[Popliteal Pterygium Syndrome (PPS): A Multimodal Treatment Approach and Long-Term Outcomes in 4 Cases].

BACKGROUND: Popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS) is a rare, autosomal dominant congenital disorder characterized by the presence of a skin and soft-tissue web in the popliteal region. Functional impairment due to knee flexion contractures, equinus deformity, and hip malalignment is common. The existing literature is dominated by isolated case reports, while robust long-term outcome data are lacking. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective case series, four patients with popliteal pterygium and functionally relevant knee flexion contractures were treated surgically. The operative approach inclu

Differential Expression of Sox2 in Human Ocular Surface and Its Implication in Pterygium Pathogenesis.

INTRODUCTION: The precise etiology and molecular mechanisms underlying pterygium pathogenesis remain poorly understood, and the expression pattern of pluripotency-associated transcription factor SOX2 in human ocular surface has not been fully characterized. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the expression profile of SOX2 and its potential role in pterygium formation. METHODS: We thoroughly investigated the expression of SOX2 in the cornea, limbus, healthy conjunctiva and pteyrigium by immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry and RT-PCR. RESULTS: We found that SOX2 is aberrantly expressed i

Limbal Niche dysfunction in pterygium: An integrated review of pathophysiology and clinical advances.

Pterygium is increasingly recognised as a localized manifestation of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), rather than a purely degenerative lesion. This review synthesizes recent findings on the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying pterygium - particularly its links to UV-induced damage, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and chronic inflammation - through the lens of limbal niche disruption. Histopathological and immunological evidence is complemented by advanced imaging modalities such as optical coherence tomography and in vivo confocal microscopy, which offer unprecedented insights into

Revealing the Association of LIG1 Genetic Variants With Pterygium Susceptibility and Demographic Characteristics in a Taiwanese Population.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pterygium is a common ocular surface disorder associated with long-term ultraviolet exposure and/or oxidative DNA damage. Accumulated evidence suggests that defects in DNA repair pathways may contribute to pterygium risk. DNA ligase I (LIG1), a key enzyme involved in DNA replication and base excision repair, has been involved in the etiology of several human diseases, including cancers. However, its role in pterygium has never been examined before. This study aimed at exploring the association between the LIG1 genotypes and pterygium risk in a Taiwanese population. PATIENTS AN

Coordinate-conditioned feature enhancement and progressive distance-field boundary supervision for pterygium segmentation in anterior segment images.

PURPOSE: Pixel-wise segmentation of pterygium lesions provides a basis for quantitative assessment of lesion area, the extent of corneal involvement, and morphological changes. However, the relatively small lesion area, limited local texture contrast, and indistinct interface between the pterygium head and the cornea can lead to incomplete segmentation and contour displacement. This study aimed to develop a fully automatic segmentation method that improves both lesion-region identification and boundary localization. METHODS: We developed an improved DeepLabV3+ framework with Xception as the b

Time to Keratometric Stability after Pterygium Excision Surgery in a Tertiary Hospital in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Pterygium is a common benign fibrovascular growth of the conjunctiva extending onto the cornea that induces corneal distortion and astigmatism as it progresses. Following excision, transient keratometric instability may occur, making the timing of refractive procedures dependent on the restoration of corneal stability. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to identify the time to achieve keratometric stability after pterygium excision surgery and associated factors. METHODS: This was an observational retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent pterygium excision within a period of

Shared names, different diseases: concordance of Thai traditional Tor diagnoses with biomedical eye conditions and back skin lesions.

BACKGROUND: In Thailand, many eye diseases are described under the umbrella term tor, originating from Thai Traditional Medicine (TTM), including pinguecula, pterygium, cataract, and glaucoma (torlom, tornuea, torkrajok, and torhin). Ophthalmologists often use these terms as labels for biomedical diagnoses, whereas TTM practitioners use them within a traditional framework that includes characteristic back skin lesions. Apparent disagreement between diagnoses may therefore reflect nosologic mismatch rather than simple error. This study aimed to compare TTM tor diagnoses with ophthalmic diagnose

Pterygium pathobiology and therapeutic evolution: Integrating mechanistic insights with pharmacological strategies to curb recurrence and advance beyond surgery.

Pterygium is a common ophthalmic disease characterized by proliferative tissue extending from the bulbar conjunctiva to the cornea, which may gradually affect vision. Contemporary reconstructive surgery-particularly conjunctival limbal autograft (CLAU), which restores the limbal stem cell niche-has achieved excellent outcomes, with recurrence rates below 2% in specialized practice. Nevertheless, surgical excision remains inherently invasive, requires substantial operator expertise and autologous grafting, and cannot reverse the underlying ultraviolet-induced limbal progenitor cell damage or pr
