India's lymphatic filariasis elimination program has achieved high mass drug administration (MDA) coverage and substantial reductions in transmission across endemic districts. As the program transitions toward transmission assessment surveys (TAS) and post-MDA surveillance, the strategic focus is shifting from expanding coverage to sustaining verified interruption of transmission. However, reliance solely on aggregate coverage metrics may overlook an important endgame vulnerability: incomplete longitudinal follow-up of individuals identified as microfilaria (Mf) positive or filarial test strip

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Tetracyclines continue to serve as a cost-effective and essential treatment for common infections, particularly in resource-limited regions such as lymphatic filariasis (LF)-hyperendemic communities. The growing use of tetracycline-based antibiotics by symptomatic filarial lymphedema patients, likely influenced by the demonstrated benefits of anti-Wolbachia therapy, especially following doxycycline trials, underlines the necessity for vigilant monitoring of tetracycline resistance patterns. This study evaluated patients' antibiotic knowledge, attitude and practice in LF-end

Filarial infestation of the nasolacrimal duct is exceptionally rare and often misdiagnosed as benign lacrimal pathology. We present a 12-year-old boy with progressive medial canthal swelling initially suspected to be a dermoid cyst or inflammatory lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined enhancing lesion at the nasolacrimal duct with preseptal edema. Histopathology demonstrated a parasite with a thick eosinophilic cuticular wall and inflammatory infiltrate rich in eosinophils and foreign-body giant cells, consistent with filarial infestation, possibly Onchocerca species. This report presents the key proceedings and outcomes of three regional consultative workshops convened to review progress, identify challenges, and propose strategic actions for lymphatic filariasis elimination in India. The workshops were organized by the Indian Council of Medical Research-Vector Control Research Centre, Puducherry in collaboration with the Women's Collective Forum, New Delhi from June 2025 to August 2025. Consultations were held in three endemic states representing different regions of India (Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu), bringing together stakeholders from the n

INTRODUCTION: Sustained compliance with Mass Drug Administration (MDA) is essential for interrupting transmission of Lymphatic filariasis (LF). However, behavioural and system-level barriers persist to hinder its uptake. We aimed to explore determinants of MDA participation using behavioural frameworks and to co-design a theory-informed, stakeholder-led intervention to enhance MDA compliance.
METHODS: A mixed-methods formative study was conducted between January and June 2025 in an LF-endemic block of Odisha, India. The quantitative component comprised a community-based KAP survey(n = 400) as

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) affects approximately 120 million people globally and is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori. Sri Lanka was historically endemic for both bancroftian and brugian filariasis, with B. malayi presumed eliminated by the late 1960s. The country achieved validation of LF elimination as a public health problem in 2016. However, sporadic Brugia infections have been detected in microfilaria surveys from the mid-2000s onwards; the sub-periodic periodicity of which is suggestive of a zoonotic origin and warrants further research.

BACKGROUND: Genital elephantiasis is a rare but debilitating condition characterized by progressive enlargement due to chronic lymphatic dysfunction. While most commonly associated with filarial infection, secondary causes include malignancy, trauma, surgery, and chronic inflammatory conditions. Scrotal involvement secondary to hidradenitis suppurativa is exceedingly rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 34-year-old male with long-standing, treatment-refractory hidradenitis suppurativa involving the groin, axilla, and chest, presenting with progressive massive scrotal enlargement over several

Canine dirofilariasis is caused by Dirofilaria, a type of filarial parasite that can also infect humans and is becoming a growing concern in Sri Lanka. Previous studies have noted that Sri Lanka has some of the highest numbers of dirofilariasis cases in Asia. This study was aimed at detecting Wolbachia bacteria-which are found inside Dirofilaria parasites-using molecular methods and also at identifying which Dirofilaria species are present in dogs in the Colombo District, Sri Lanka. Blood was collected from 368 dogs of various breeds between May and December 2025. Of these, only 35 samples (9.

Advanced filariasis-induced lymphedema causes irreversible fibrosis, severe disability, recurrent infections, and major psychosocial burden, often with poor response to conservative therapy. Surgical management in this type of lymphedema is rarely addressed. We conducted a PRISMA 2020-guided systematic review evaluating surgical interventions versus conservative management or no intervention in adults with filarial lymphedema, involving various anatomical locations. Of 580 records identified, 29 studies were included for qualitative synthesis. The evidence base predominantly consisted of case

Background: While traditional pasture-based systems offer sheep natural living conditions and freedom, barn farming provides greater environmental control and protection. The choice of farming system is a crucial factor directly affecting the physical and mental health of the animals. Aim: This study evaluated welfare indicators and parasite prevalence in different sheep management systems, examining the impact of parasitic infections on ewe welfare. Methods: Conducted from November 2025 to April 2026 across 26 farms (13 confined and 13 pasture), the study individually assessed a sample of 119

BACKGROUND: Filarial infections continue to represent a considerable public health challenge in resource-limited communities in sub-Saharan Africa. In Gabon, the implementation of effective control strategies, such as mass drug administration (MDA), is hindered by a lack of contemporary data on the local distribution, molecular diversity, and associated risk factors of these infections, particularly in rural areas where Loa loa co-endemicity poses a risk of severe adverse events. This study aimed to molecularly characterize filarial species and determine the prevalence, associated risk factors

Loiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the filarial nematode Loa loa, endemic to Central and West Africa. Its occurrence in non-endemic regions such as Morocco is rare and may pose a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a Moroccan patient presenting with an intermittent sensation of a mobile foreign body in the eye, associated with redness and photophobia. The patient reported no recent travel to endemic regions but had close contact with individuals originating from Cameroon, a loiasis-endemic area, raising questions regarding possible indirect or remote exposure. Following several

Chronic filarial infections remain a global health burden, with limited adulticidal therapies highlighting the need for new drugs. We explored repurposing human GPCR antagonists, including clemizole, pimozide, proroxan, and suloctidil, along with 45 rationally designed analogs for activity against Brugia pahangi and two Onchocerca species. Of those, 27 showed in vitro adulticidal activity. In vivo, clemizole and analog C-8 significantly reduced worm burden by 60.5% and 50.8%, respectively, while S-17 and PMZ-6 modestly reduced worm burden (36% and 25%, respectively); however, all three signifi

Onchocerciasis is a disease caused by the filarial nematode parasite Onchocerca volvulus and is transmitted by blackflies after they ingest larval offspring, microfilariae, found in the skin of infected people. The elimination of transmission within endemic communities in sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas, and Yemen depends on mass drug administration of ivermectin (MDAi) at high treatment coverage until the prevalence of the parasite in people or in blackflies reaches below a threshold value. In Africa, there are a number of communities where worms that are less susceptible to the effects of i

A human-biting black fly, Simulium (Gomphostilbia) asakoae Takaoka & Davies, 1995, together with certain other members of the S. asakoae species group, is of medical and veterinary importance as a vector of various pathogens. However, accurate species identification remains challenging due to the high morphological similarity among related members and the limitations of cox1 barcoding. To address this challenge, this study developed a multiplex PCR assay based on the cox1 gene to differentiate S. asakoae. In addition, diverse pathogens circulating in the S. asakoae species group collected from

Corallopyronin A (CorA) depletes essential Wolbachia endosymbionts of filarial nematodes and is therefore a promising candidate for treating the neglected tropical diseases lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. To optimize anti-Wolbachia therapy, the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) relationship was investigated. Due to the intra-nematode and -cellular target, conventional minimal inhibitory concentration could not be determined. Instead, an iterative approach was used to define PD efficacy thresholds and compare them with IC₅₀/IC₉₀ values from infected cells. A physiologically based

Filarioid nematodes cause reduced livestock productivity and economic losses worldwide. In cattle, differentiation of microfilariae based on morphology is challenging due to overlapping morphological characteristics. This study aimed to identify microfilariae in cattle blood and determine the prevalence and risk factors of filarial worm infection in Thailand using two microscopic diagnostic methods and molecular techniques. A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2023 to June 2024 across 15 provinces in Thailand. Cattle blood samples (n = 419) were collected, and microfilariae were exa

Dirofilaria spp. are mosquito-borne filarial nematodes that primarily infect mammals. Here, we describe a filarial nematode infection in a female little egret (Egretta garzetta) from Jeju, Korea. Necropsy revealed multiple slender nematodes (4-6 cm) in the subcutaneous tissues of both legs. Histopathological examination demonstrated granulomatous inflammation with intralesional parasites. Morphologically, the nematodes exhibited a thick multilayered cuticle with prominent longitudinal ridges, consistent with members of the genus Dirofilaria. Molecular analysis based on 18S rRNA and mitochondri
