Molecular Detection of Filarial and Avian Haemosporidian Parasites in Culicoides Biting Midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from Laos.

Species of Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are important biting pests and vectors of pathogens affecting humans and animals. However, information on Culicoides-parasite associations in Laos is lacking. We used molecular methods to screen 237 specimens representing 27 Culicoides species from Laos for filarial nematodes, avian haemosporidians, Trypanosoma spp., and Leishmania spp. Overall, 59 specimens representing 19 Culicoides species were positive for at least one parasite. Only filarial nematodes and avian haemosporidians were detected. Filarial parasites were found in four C

Lymphatic filariasis in India: A historical and contemporary overview.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a prevalent and serious ailment impacting millions worldwide, including India. The disease has been recognized since the 6 th century BCE and well documented since the 18 th century, and it is regarded as one of the most concerning vector-borne diseases. India accounts for nearly 40% of the worldwide burden of LF. METHODS: A comprehensive review was conducted using online and offline databases, focusing on studies related to different aspects of LF in India. RESULTS: Literature suggests that in India, about 98% of infections are produced by

Onchocerciasis and non-communicable diseases in the Bafut Health District, Cameroon: Knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards community-directed treatment with ivermectin.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis remains a public health problem in Cameroon despite years of community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI). Its persistence increasingly overlaps with the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward onchocerciasis and CDTI, as well as the coexistence of chronic NCDs, may influence the success of elimination programs. METHODOLOGY: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted between April and June 2022 in Bafut Health District, Northwest Cameroon. Using a structured, interviewer-administ

Exploring the landscape of lymphatic filariasis research in India: A scientometric analysis of two decades from 2000 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: The launch of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) in 2000 catalysed a surge in research and programmatic initiatives worldwide. However, a systematic evaluation of global LF research output over the past two decades remains limited. This scientometric analysis maps LF research from 2000 to 2024, with a special focus on India's contribution. METHODS AND RESULTS: Original research articles on LF published between 2000 and 2024 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection using title-specific MeSH keywords. Bibliographic data were analysed using t

A Compendium Review of the Global Epidemiology of Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases: Regional Insights from Türkiye.

Vector-borne diseases have historically posed significant threats to plants, humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, with their impact being especially pronounced in tropical and subtropical regions. Among these, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have emerged as an increasingly critical global concern. This growing threat is largely driven by the expanding geographic range of ticks and the wide array of pathogens they transmit, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, fungi, and infectious prion proteins. The global cumulative economic impact of the challenges caused by ticks and TBDs contri

Ocular filariasis manifesting as an orbital cellulitis and conjunctival nodule: a case report.

Filariasis is a parasitic infection that mostly involves the skin and ocular surface, although all layers of the eye and orbit can be affected. We report a case of a 42-year-old woman with Loa loa infection manifesting as a sequential bilateral forehead Calabar swelling, severe orbital cellulitis and thereafter mimicking a conjunctival tumor. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography helped to differentiate between a neoplasm and the filarial worm and show typical features such as longitudinal and cross-sections of the parasite. The worm was surgically removed and microbiologists confirmed

Patient perspectives and barriers to effective home-based care in lymphatic filariasis: A mixed methods study from Puducherry, India.

Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP) remain an under-addressed component of lymphatic filariasis elimination. Despite the simplicity of the hygiene-based regimen, adherence to these practices remains low due to multiple barriers, exacerbating chronic suffering. As the primary role remains vested in the patients, this study explores their perspectives and barriers to home-based care to inform strategies to improve outcomes. This study employed a mixed-methods approach using an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative phase involved a cross-sectional survey of 321 adult p

Modelling the effects of immigration on the re-introduction of onchocerciasis.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis is a filarial neglected tropical disease targeted by the World Health Organization for elimination (interruption) of transmission (EOT), principally by mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin. Variable effectiveness and success of MDA, among other factors, has led to a markedly heterogeneous contemporary spatial landscape of endemicity and transmission, with some foci having achieved or nearing EOT, while in others, transmission persists despite decades of MDA or has only recently been identified. Communities reaching EOT or free from infection are thus vulner

Transmission status of lymphatic filariasis in hotspots of filarial infection, persistent districts of nepal during post-MDA surveillance.

BACKGROUND: The lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination program in Nepal was launched in 2003, three years after the implementation of a global program to eliminate lymphatic filariasis globally. Based on antigenic prevalence below the cut-off value, i.e., ≤ 2% shown by the transmission assessment survey (TASI) report of 2017-2018, the program was stopped in Nepal. The report indicated that antigen-positive children were clustered in the community and considered hotspots. In order to find the status of lymphatic filariasis transmission at the community level, the present study was designed in th

Vitamin A and D levels in patients with filarial lymphedema and healthy volunteers in Puducherry, India.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a parasitic disease caused by filarial nematode worms, transmitted by mosquitoes. Infection damages the lymphatic system which leads to limb lymphedema and hydrocele. LF continues to remain one of the major neglected tropical diseases. Patients with filarial lymphedema are prone to nutritional deficiencies due to poverty, poor nutrition, old age, and frequent adenolymphangitis. However, studies on micronutrient deficiencies in affected patients remain scarce. In this study, we aimed to assess the levels of vitamin A and D in patients visiting a specialized clinic f

Nuclear, mitochondrial, and Wolbachia endosymbiont genomes of Onchocerca lupi, Portugal.

Zoonotic Onchocerca lupi (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) has attracted the interest of the scientific community worldwide, by causing severe ocular infections in domestic animals (dogs, cats) and can infect wild carnivores (wolves, coyotes), as well as humans. Though recent advancements in scientific knowledge have been gained, gaps still remain about the biology of this filarioid, as well as its genetic structure. Based on mitochondrial genes, two highly divergent genotypes were identified, in the Iberian Peninsula (genotype 2) and Europe, Asia, and the United States (genotype 1), meanwhile only a

Helminth Antigens Modulate Virus-Induced Activation of CD154 (CD40L) Expression on T Cells in Onchocerca volvulus-Infected Individuals.

BACKGROUND: The interaction between helminth and viral infections has important implications for understanding viral disease outcomes and vaccine efficacy in helminth-endemic regions. We previously demonstrated that helminth seropositivity is associated with reduced Th1/Th17 cytokine levels and reduced COVID-19 severity; however, the underlying immunological mechanisms remain unclear. This study further investigated these mechanisms by assessing how helminth antigens influence SARS-CoV-2-induced T-cell responses in individuals infected with filarial parasites in vitro. METHODS: Peripheral blo

Cross-sectional epidemiological assessment of lymphatic filariasis situation in areas under post-mass drug administration surveillance and the associated risk of transmission in the context of migrants in India: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: India targets to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) in alignment with the global goals. By 2024, 106 out of a total of 345 endemic districts have passed all three serial transmission assessment surveys (TAS) and are under post-mass drug administration (MDA) surveillance for a variable period. However, the current epidemiological situation of LF is not known in these districts. With increased mobility of population from the endemic districts currently under MDA to these post-MDA areas, resurgence of LF in these areas cannot be ruled out. Therefore, a study is planned to understan

Defining onchocerciasis transmission zones: integrating operational insights with genomic and ecological advances.

Onchocerciasis is a parasitic infection caused by the filarial nematode Onchocerca volvulus and is transmitted through the bites of blackflies of the genus Simulium that breed in rivers and streams. The current WHO definition of transmission zones is limited, leaving country programmes to address challenges such as delineating transmission zones correctly, addressing blackfly migration, managing parasite and host movement and handling cross-border transmission issues. A more data-driven approach to the practical definition of transmission zones in African countries would be advantageous. A rev
