Five eyes containing choroidal melanomas were found, on histopathologic examination, to have traumatic episcleritis with foreign-body granulomas and scleral edema underlying the area of tumor. This reaction was clearly correlated with phosphorus 32 testing that had been performed one to four weeks earlier. In all cases, enucleation had been delayed for logistic reasons. Invasion of the sclera or intrascleral canals was found in each case, with extension to the episclera in two of three small melanomas. A diagnostic method has been developed to analyze tear specimens from patients with red eyes, using the technique of laser diffraction. After proper tear sample preparation, presence of a diffraction halo produced by the tear specimen indicates presence of an external ocular inflammation and helps rule out such conditions as glaucoma, iritis and episcleritis. Measurement of the size of the halo pattern may also be used to give information as to the concentration of cells in the tear sample.

Retinal breaks developed in four eyes of four patients with hemoglobin SC disease and advanced proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (PSR) after argon laser photocoagulation of feeder vessels. Iritis, Iridocyclitis, Uveitis and Scleritis are sometimes caused by rheumatic diseases. Antinuclear antibodies of 64 patients with high ASL O titer and Antinuclear antibodies of 24 patients with negativ ASL O titer were investigated. The results demonstrate the existance of autoantibodies in many cases. These may be caused by autoimmuno-diseases or could be related directly to ophthalmic disorder.

Six cases of acute necrotizing scleritis are described. These first presented after ocular surgery to the same eye and possible aetiological factors relating to the surgery are discussed. A mechanism for the production of scleritis in these cases is proposed which is analogous to an experimental animal model.

Rabbits were sensitized over a prolonged period to ovalbumin by intradermal injection. Ovalbumin was then injected into the limbus of the eye. A corneoscleral lesion, similar to necrotizing scleritis in humans, was produced. The clinical progression of the lesion is described and its histologic appearance discussed in relation to the human disease.

Three cases of perforated Pseudomonas corneal ulcers with scleral extension were treated with keratoplasty and cryotherapy to the remaining cornea and sclera. All three cases showed dramatic improvement. Cryotherapy of Pseudomonas keratitis in guinea pigs has been shown to be effective. Pseudomonas organisms seem to be susceptible to cryotherapy in vivo; there is no effect in vitro. Cryotherapy may prove to be a new tool in the treatment of Pseudomonas keratitis.

The referring diagnoses in seven women with posterior scleritis included intraocular neoplasm, retrobulbar tumor, choroiditis, and idiopathic central serous choroidopathy. We describe 2 cases of progressive hemifacial atrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome) with typical facial and ocular involvement. Ocular manifestations in these 2 cases include enophthalmos, due to fat atrophy, decreased corneal sensitivity, episcleritis, and band keratopathy. The slowly progressive changes were documented in one case over a 40 year period. Both cases were unilateral with limitation of the lesions at the midline.

A consecutive series of 450 eyes enucleated because of a malignant melanoma of the choroid or ciliary body was reviewed in an effort to establish the incidence of ocular inflammation or intraocular hemorrhage as the initial clinical manifestation. During a period of seven years out of 900 explant operations done in New York 31 sponges had to be removed. This case report suggests that calcifications in the sclera and choroid may be a feature of pseudohypoparathyroidism and shows a calcium distribution more extensive and severe than that characteristically seen in other metabolic conditions associated with calcium deposits in the eye. Large cells containing prominent, refractile PAS-positive inclusions were found in cytological smears prepared from scrapings of the conjunctiva of an elderly diabetic patient with idiopathic scleritis progressing to scleromalacia perforans.
