Ophthalmological manifestations in inflammatory bowel disease under the watchful eye of a gastroenterologist from a tertiary centre.

INTRODUCTION: Ophthalmological manifestations (O-EIM) are one of the extraintestinal manifestations (EIM) of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), although their frequency and potential relationship with disease activity and treatment remain underestimated. AIM: The aim of this screening questionnaire was to assess the number of EIM, including O-EIM, among patients with IBD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 436 patients with IBD and 102 patients without IBD were included in this single-centre retrospective study. The questionnaire consisted of questions regarding the frequency of EIM, including confirmed O

Choroiditis following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in unvaccinated identical twins.

Unvaccinated identical twins developed bilateral anterior uveitis soon after the onset of coronavirus disease 2019 symptoms. During follow-up, both patients developed choroiditis, and one twine developed posterior scleritis and serous retinal detachment. Prompt treatment with oral prednisone ameliorated the lesions, and no recurrence was observed at the 18-month follow-up. Choroiditis may rarely be associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, and it responds well to corticosteroid therapy. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, we hypothesize that the virus may

Pits of Fire: Post Scleral Graft Vasculitis in Patients With Optic Disc Pit Maculopathy.

Occlusive vasculitis is a rare complication following an uneventful surgery. In this article, we report two cases of optic disc pit maculopathy that underwent scleral graft and developed vasculitis following uneventful surgery. Both patients underwent autologous scleral graft for optic disc pit maculopathy through 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy. Scleral graft was harvested from patient's same eye and plugged in the optic disc pit. After a postoperative period of approximately 3 months, both patients developed features of occlusive vasculitis with vitreous base contraction. Uveitic workup did n

Collagen cross-linking beyond corneal ectasia: A comprehensive review.

The history of corneal cross-linking (CXL) dates back to 2003 when some German scientists investigated possible treatments to harden the corneal structure to increase its resistance in ectatic corneal diseases. Nowadays, CXL is considered the most effective therapy in ectatic corneal diseases due to its proven efficacy in hardening the cornea, thus halting the development of the disease. Since 2003, CXL applications have dramatically expanded and have been implemented in several other areas such as infectious keratitis, corneal edema, and before performing keratoplasty for various purposes. Transpupillary-Guided Trans-Scleral Transplantation of Subretinal Grafts in a Retinal Degeneration Mouse Model.

Transplantation of photoreceptor cells and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells provide a potential therapy for retinal degeneration diseases. Subretinal transplantation of therapeutic donor cells into mouse recipients is challenging due to the limited surgical space allowed by the small volume of the mouse eye. We developed a trans-scleral surgical transplantation platform with direct transpupillary vision guidance to facilitate the subretinal delivery of exogenous cells in mouse recipients. The platform was tested using retinal cell suspensions and three-dimensional retinal sheets collecte

Double-Bubble Technique Assisted by Holding Forceps: A Modified Technique in Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty for Vitrectomized Eyes With Scleral Fixated Intraocular Lens.

PURPOSE: Several techniques have been developed for graft unfolding approaches in Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). However, despite these techniques, graft deployment and configuration in eyes with deep anterior chambers remain challenging in some cases. Therefore, in this study, we described a modified technique for DMEK, known as the "double-bubble technique assisted by holding forceps." METHODS: This was a retrospective interventional case series. Patients who underwent DMEK between August 2022 and July 2023, including cases with a history of vitrectomy and scleral fixati

Aqueous humor as eye lymph: A crossroad between venous and lymphatic system.

Aqueous humor (AQH) is a transparent fluid with characteristics similar to those of the interstitial fluid, which fills the eyeball posterior and anterior chambers and circulates in them from the sites of production to those of drainage. The AQH volume and pressure homeostasis is essential for the trophism of the ocular avascular tissues and their normal structure and function. Different AQH outflow pathways exist, including a main pathway, quite well defined anatomically and referred to as the conventional pathway, and some accessory pathways, more recently described and still not fully morph
