We herein present a rare case of acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) associated with nonspecific orbital inflammation (NSOI). A 38-year-old woman presented with a 3-day history of ocular pain, reduced vision, periorbital swelling, proptosis, conjunctival chemosis, and restricted eye movements. Optical coherence tomography of the affected eye confirmed signs of CSC. Additionally, a computed tomography scan revealed enlargement of intraconal soft tissues and the lacrimal gland. Ocular ultrasonography detected posterior sclera thickening, indicating posterior scleritis. Following the dia

Aim: To report a patient with choroidal bulging, sub-retinal fluid, and optic nerve head (ONH) swelling who was finally diagnosed with focal nodular posterior scleritis. Case report: A 51-year-old male patient presented to us with acute painful visual loss of his left eye (LE) from 3 days ago. The best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) was 20/20 and hand motion (HM) for the right eye (RE) and LE, respectively. Fundus examination of the LE showed ONH swelling, choroidal bulging, multiple patches of subretinal fluid accumulation, and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) corrugations. Orbital

We performed a comprehensive systematic review to identify medication-associated orbital inflammation and to characterize its clinico-radiological features. We reviewed English-language articles describing medication-associated orbital inflammation (i.e., orbital myositis, dacryoadenitis and orbital fat) published to June, 2023. Isolated inflammation of the intraocular structures or globe alone (i.e. uveitis, scleritis, optic neuritis and perineuritis) were excluded. In medication-associated orbital inflammation, the extraocular muscles are preferentially affected, occurring in isolation or in

BACKGROUND: VEXAS (Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, Autoinflammatory, Somatic) is a hematoinflammatory disease that typically affects adults. It results from a somatic mutation of the E1 ubiquitin conjugating enzyme encoded by the UBA1 gene. VEXAS is frequently accompanied by myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The purpose of this study is to describe the ocular and orbital manifestations of VEXAS patients in a case series in our medical centre.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for all patients who were diagnosed with VEXAS syndrome in a tertiary medical centre over two years.

PURPOSE: Patients with sight-threatening inflammatory eye disease (IED) are maintained on systemic immunosuppression whilst in long-term clinical remission. There are no clear guidelines on the duration of remission before implementing treatment withdrawal. We present a real-world analysis on the use of immunosuppression in IED in long-term remission and consider strategies for withdrawal.
METHODS: Adult IED patients on systemic immunosuppression were categorised into four disease groups: Corneal Transplant Survival Strategies (CTSS), Ocular Surface Disease (OSD), Non-infectious Uveitis (NIU)

A 42-year-old male presented initially with conjunctivitis and was treated with topical medical medications without any improvement. He developed ocular pain subsequently and further examination revealed lid edema, conjunctival hyperemia with chemosis, matting of lashes with yellowish discharge, and deeper episcleral congestion which did not blanch with topical vasoconstrictor. Subsequent laboratory investigation revealed positive cytoplasmic-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (Anti-PR 3 antibody). He continued to develop recurrences and finally responded to oral azathioprine. Granulomatosis

Immunotherapy has renovated the field of oncology. Usually, cancer is treated by surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Immunotherapy is a promising treatment that harnesses the patient's own immune system to target cancer. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have proven to be a promising treatment avenue for managing cancer; however, their use had been associated with a unique spectrum of adverse side effects called immune-related adverse events (irAEs). As ICIs become increasingly relevant in cancer management, it is crucial to address these irAEs affecting various systems in the body, includ

The most frequently reported adverse reaction to zoledronic acid is an acute phase reaction resembling influenza. While rarer adverse events such as osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fractures have gained significant recognition, the ocular adverse effects, particularly scleritis, are not yet fully comprehended. Here, we present the case of a 75-year-old female patient with osteoporosis who developed bilateral redness and intense eye pain 48 h after receiving a 5 mg intravenous dose of zoledronic acid. Clinical presentation suggested bilateral conjunctivitis, but treatment with lev

There is an increasing body of knowledge regarding how COVID-19 may be associated with ocular disease of varying severity and duration. This article discusses the literature on the ocular manifestations associated with COVID-19, including appraisal of the current evidence, suggested mechanisms of action, associated comorbidities and risk factors, timing from initial infection to diagnosis and clinical red flags. The current literature primarily comprises case reports and case series which inevitably lack control groups and evidence to support causality. However, these early data have prompted

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has significantly impacted various organ systems, including the eyes. Initially considered a primarily respiratory disease, it is now evident that COVID-19 can induce a range of ocular symptoms. Recognizing these ocular manifestations is crucial for eye care practitioners as they can serve as early indicators of the disease. This review consolidates current evidence on the ocular effects of COVID-19, identifying manifestations such as conjunctivitis, scleritis, uveitis, and retinopathy. The increasing prevalence of these symptoms highlights the impo

INTRODUCTION: Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition arising from a type IV hypersensitivity reaction, presenting with inflamed nodules on the conjunctiva and cornea. Scleritis is a severe ocular inflammation linked to systemic diseases, potentially vision threatening, and involving immune responses similar to phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis. This case report discusses a patient with a history of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 infection who primarily developed phlyctenular conjunctivitis and later progressed to nodular scleritis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old female

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex, multisystemic disease and is associated with ocular pathology in 4-12% of patients. In general, ocular disease affects Crohn's patients more frequently than those with ulcerative colitis. Episcleritis and uveitis are the most common presentations, with episcleritis often correlating with IBD flares, whereas uveitis presents independently of IBD activity and, in some cases, may even alert clinicians to a new diagnosis of IBD. Corneal EIMs encompass a range of pathologies, such as the common and benign keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye disease), w
