Second Primary Malignancies - a Retrospective Analysis from a Regional Cancer Centre of South India.

Background. Ruminants are successful herbivorous mammals, in part due to their specialized forestomachs, the rumen complex, which facilitates the conversion of feed to soluble nutrients by micro-organisms. Is the rumen complex a modified stomach expressing new epithelial (cornification) and metabolic programs, or a specialised stratified epithelium that has acquired new metabolic activities, potentially similar to those of the colon? How has the presence of the rumen affected other sections of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of ruminants compared to non-ruminants? Methods. Transcriptome data

Treatment of pediatric ocular rosacea: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Ocular rosacea is an underdiagnosed form of rosacea that may occur without typical cutaneous signs of rosacea. Manifestations include blepharitis, lid margin telangiectasias, and scleritis. A systematic comparison of treatment options for ocular rosacea in children is lacking. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines on treatment for pediatric ocular rosacea. RESULTS: Eleven articles were included, representing 135 patients with a mean age of 5 years, of whom 69% (n = 75/108) were female. 55% (n = 55/99) exhibited ocular symptoms prior to cuta

Factors associated with posttraumatic growth: gratitude, PTSD and distress; one year into the COVID-19 pandemic in Lebanon.

DNA-PK is an enzyme that is required for proper DNA-repair and is thought to confer radio-resistance in cancer cells. As a consequence, it is a high-profile validated target for new pharmaceutical development. However, no FDA-approved DNA-PK inhibitors have emerged, despite many years of drug discovery and lead optimization. This is largely because existing DNA-PK inhibitors suffer from poor pharmacokinetics. They are not well absorbed and/or are unstable, with a short plasma half-life. Here, we identified the first FDA-approved DNA-PK inhibitor by "chemical proteomics". In an effort to unders

Bilateral Conjunctival Actinic Granuloma With Necrobiotic Vasculitic Pattern: A Diagnosis of Exclusion.

A 53-year-old Caucasian male presented with an inflamed-appearing limbal nodule in his OD, clinically compatible with nodular episcleritis, that was unresponsive to topical corticosteroid therapy. Excisional biopsy of the lesion was performed and histopathological examination revealed foci of necrotizing vasculitis and granulomatous inflammation in a background of intense actinic elastosis. Infectious stains for organisms were negative. A comprehensive systemic evaluation for vasculitides was negative. Three years later, the patient returned with a clinically and histopathologically identical

Malignant ocular teratoid medulloepithelioma in two cats.

Medulloepithelioma is a type of rare primitive neuroectodermal tumour. Most medulloepitheliomas are intraocular and they have been most frequently reported in horses and dogs. A single feline case has been reported but the teratoid form has not been previously reported in cats. Two cats presented with rapidly expanding intraocular masses and ophthalmic examination revealed vascularized uveal tumours extending into the anterior chamber and vitreous chamber. Following enucleation, histopathological examination of each case revealed a focally extensive infiltrative neoplasm that replaced the uvea

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy in the diagnosis of subconjunctival mycosis mimicking nodular scleritis.

A female patient in her 20s presented with a bulbar conjunctival mass lesion that was diagnosed as nodular scleritis. It was treated with topical and oral steroids in another hospital. Imaging was done using anterior segment optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy, which helped to rule out scleritis and subconjunctival cysticercosis. Histopathology of the excision biopsy specimen revealed fungal filaments. Topical antifungals were started, and the condition resolved without recurrence after therapy. Although rare, infections should be considered in the differential diagnosis

Optical Coherence Tomography Based Choroidal Thickness and Its Determinants in Healthy Saudi Population: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Purpose To study choroidal thickness (CT) and its determinants based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the healthy adult Saudi population. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 at a tertiary eye hospital in Saudi Arabia. The autorefractor-based refractive status (spherical equivalent) of each eye was documented. CT was measured from the enhanced depth OCT images at the fovea to the 1500 µm nasal and temporal to the fovea. CT was defined as the distance from a hyper-reflective line representing retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)-Bruch's membrane to the chor

Up-Regulation of NLRP3 in the Sclera Correlates with Myopia Progression in a Form-Deprivation Myopia Mouse Model.

BACKGROUND: NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) is a common inflammatory factor that induces inflammation by increasing the expression of related cytokines. Although the NLRP3 inflammasome has been implicated in many ophthalmic diseases, its role in myopia is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between myopia progression and the NLRP3 pathway. METHODS: A form-deprivation myopia (FDM) mouse model was used. Different degrees of myopic shift were achieved via monocular form deprivation with 0-, 2-, and 4-week covering, and by 4-week coveri

Network Approaches to Uncover Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Targets of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are currently recognized to involve chronic intestinal inflammation in genetically susceptible individuals. Patients with IBD mainly develop gastrointestinal inflammation, but it is sometimes accompanied by extraintestinal manifestations such as arthritis, erythema nodosum, episcleritis, pyoderma gangrenosum, uveitis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis. These clinical aspects imply the importance of interorgan networks in IBD. In the gastrointestinal tract, immune cells are influenced by multiple local environmental factors including microbiota, dietary enviro

Exploring the relationship between intestinal flora and the pathological mechanism of myopia in adolescents from the perspective of Chinese and Western medicine: A review.

The etiology of adolescent myopia involves genetic and environmental factors. The pathological mechanism of modern medicine includes blood perfusion, changes in blood molecules, neurotransmitters, and sclera remodeling. Chinese medicine believes that myopia is mainly related to the deficiency of liver blood and spleen and stomach disorders. The prevention and treatment of myopia in adolescents are very important, but in terms of the current incidence of myopia in adolescents and the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment, its prevention and treatment are insufficient. Modern medicine and tr

Scleral appearance is not a correlate of domestication in mammals.

Numerous hypotheses try to explain the unusual appearance of the human eye with its bright sclera and transparent conjunctiva and how it could have evolved from a dark-eyed phenotype, as is present in many non-human primates. Recently, it has been argued that pigmentation defects induced by self-domestication may have led to bright-eyed ocular phenotypes in humans and some other primate lineages, such as marmosets. However, it has never been systematically studied whether actual domesticated mammals consistently deviate from wild mammals in regard to their conjunctival pigmentation and if this

Necrotizing Scleritis: A Review.

Necrotizing scleritis is the most destructive and vision-threatening form of scleritis. Necrotizing scleritis can occur in systemic autoimmune disorders and systemic vasculitis, as well as following microbial infection. Rheumatoid arthritis and granulomatosis with polyangiitis remain the commonest identifiable systemic diseases associated with necrotising scleritis. Pseudomonas species is the most common organism causing infectious necrotizing scleritis, with surgery the most common risk factor. Necrotizing scleritis has the highest rates of complications and is more prone to secondary glaucom
