Ocular manifestations of ANCA-associated vasculitis.

OBJECTIVES: ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a group of multisystem diseases that can have several ocular manifestations. There are published data on ocular manifestations of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), but few for eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) or microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). There is little information concerning chronicity, complications, and association with other cranial manifestations of AAV. METHODS: This study retrospectively analysed longitudinal multicentre cohorts of individuals with AAV followed between 2006 and 2022. Data included diagnosis

Applications of Infrared Thermography in Ophthalmology.

Body temperature is one of the key vital signs for determining a disease's severity, as it reflects the thermal energy generated by an individual's metabolism. Since the first study on the relationship between body temperature and diseases by Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich at the end of the 19th century, various forms of thermometers have been developed to measure body temperature. Traditionally, methods for measuring temperature can be invasive, semi-invasive, and non-invasive. In recent years, great technological advances have reduced the cost of thermographic cameras, which allowed extendi

Rosacea: The eyes have it.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis typically affecting the facial skin but also the eyes. With its chronic course with fluctuating episodes of flashing, redness, papulopustules, and nodules it poses a severe psychologic burden to the affected individuals. In addition to the facial changes, more than half of the patients have ocular involvement ranging from blepharitis and conjunctival hyperemia to more severe ophthalmic damage, and even blindness. Clinically, the ocular involvement in rosacea includes meibomian gland dysfunction with relapsing hordeola and chalazia, diffuse hyperemic

Scleromalacia perforans as an early manifestation of late-onset rheumatoid arthritis: a case-based review.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect different organs beyond the joints. Ocular involvement includes keratoconjunctivitis sicca, peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK), episcleritis, scleritis, anterior uveitis, and corneal impairment. The most severe form of scleritis, scleromalacia perforans, is an aggressive ophthalmic manifestation that can potentially lead to blindness, usually occurring in late stages of disease. We report a case of an elderly woman in which this severe ocular manifestation occurred early on disease onset, differing from most of the previou

[Ophthalmic manifestations of COVID-19].

In March 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) caused by the SARS-CoV-2 respiratory virus. The high spread rate of the virus and the severity of the course of the disease are of great clinical and epidemiological significance, making it relevant for ophthalmologists to study the mechanisms of how SARS-CoV-2 infects ocular structures, as well as possible clinical manifestations of the infection in the organ of vision. This review contains analysis, systematization, and generalization of epidemiological and clinical data on SAR

A Case of Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus With Multiple Delayed Ocular Complications.

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) presents a variety of ocular complications, most of which occur simultaneously as skin lesions. We report a case of HZO with delayed onset of multiple ocular complications. A 72-year-old man developed HZO, blepharitis, iritis, and conjunctivitis in the left eye, which resolved after topical ocular treatment and systemic acyclovir administration. However, six weeks after the first onset of the rash, the patient came to our hospital because of recurrent blepharitis, iritis, scleritis, conjunctivitis, eye pain, ptosis, and blurred vision in the left eye.
