Orbital cellulitis with posterior scleritis in a 13-year-old girl: A case report.

RATIONALE: Clinical signs and symptoms of posterior scleritis vary and are easily confused with other diseases. Inflammation spreads anteriorly, involving the upper lid structures, causing lid swelling and simulating cellulitis. However, we report a case of orbital cellulitis with posterior scleritis and complications, with the aim of helping clinicians identify and treat early to prevent irreversible loss of vision. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 13-year-old girl presented with pain in her right eye and an acute deterioration in vision. DIAGNOSES: The case was diagnosed as orbital cellulitis with post

Clinical Spectrum of Cutaneous, Ocular, and Hair Manifestations in Patients With Inborn Errors of Immunity: Insights From a Single Center in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Inborn errors of immunity (IEI), previously referred to as primary immunodeficiencies, are a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders affecting immune development and function. While once considered rare, IEIs are increasingly recognized, particularly in regions with high consanguinity rates. Cutaneous manifestations, as well as ocular and hair abnormalities, may provide early and clinically relevant diagnostic clues. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, types, and diagnostic value of cutaneous, ocular and hair manifestations in patients with IEI. METHODS: A total of 386 pat

Dual drug loaded dissolvable annular microneedle patch to treat bacterial conjunctivitis.

The effective management of anterior segment ocular diseases such as bacterial conjunctivitis is limited by poor corneal permeability and rapid precorneal drug loss. Although microneedle-based ocular drug administration overcomes these barriers, the reported microneedle array designs show obstruction of vision and potential for alteration in the visual pathway reducing their clinical translation. Here, we report a novel annular microneedle patch (AMP) design containing gatifloxacin and prednisolone combination that maintains central corneal transparency, enabling safe limbal-scleral placement

Case Report: Late-onset liver cirrhosis in an elderly patient with FBN1-related Geleophysic Dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: FBN1-related geleophysic dysplasia (GD2) is an ultrarare autosomal dominant disorder caused by dominant-negative missense variants in the TGFβ-binding protein-like domain 5 (TB5) of FBN1. It is characterized by severe short stature, brachydactyly, progressive joint stiffness, and cardiac valvular disease. Although hepatomegaly is known to occur in GD, progression to cirrhosis with portal hypertension in the elderly has never been documented. CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old Chinese man presented with a 1-year history of abdominal distension and was found to have liver cirrhosis du

An Evidence-Based Narrative Review of Scleral Hypoxia Theory in Myopia: From Mechanisms to Treatments.

Myopia is one of the dominant causes of visual impairment in the world. Pathological myopia could even lead to other serious eye diseases. Researchers have reached a consensus that myopia could be caused by both environmental and genetic risk factors. Exploring the pathological mechanism of myopia can provide a scientific basis for developing measures to delay the progression of myopia or even treat it. Recent advances highlight that scleral hypoxia could be an important factor in promoting myopia. In this review, we summarized the role of scleral hypoxia in the pathology of myopia and also pr

Recurrent nodular episcleritis as a manifestation of long COVID.

A woman in her 50s presented with redness, eye pain, watering and photophobia of the left eye starting 1 week after she tested positive for COVID-19. She was diagnosed with left eye episcleritis and started on topical steroids. As the steroids were being gradually tapered, she developed a recurrence. The cycle of treatment-tapering-recurrence repeated itself such that nine episodes were noted within a span of 3 years. An exhaustive diagnostic work-up including infective and autoimmune blood tests, rheumatology assessment and COVID-19 conjunctival swabs and tear samples were done, and no underl

Case report: Scleromalacia caused by rheumatoid arthritis combined with high intraocular pressure, first discovered due to ocular trauma.

A 53-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis was first diagnosed with scleromalacia at the ophthalmology clinic after experiencing ocular trauma. The patient presented with decreased vision and abnormalities were subsequently found in his other eye. An ophthalmologist performed emergency debridement and suturing surgery on the ruptured right eyeball, discovering that the sclera was thinned to only 1/5 to 1/3 of its normal thickness. After the operation, the ophthalmologist examined the patient's right eye and noted similar bluish scleral changes along with elevated intraocular pressure. In this

Delivery of Fenofibrate to Ocular Tissues using 2-Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-Based Micelles.

Age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy are the main diseases that cause vision impairment. The standard treatment for this condition is the intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents, which cause several side effects to the eye after injection. Topical administration would be a more effective method, but the ocular layers act as barriers to drug diffusion. In this research, we presented the preparation and characterization of poly(pseudo)rotaxanes (PPRs) containing 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (2-HPβCD), Pluronic® F127 (PF127) and Soluplus® to

Cysticercosis of the Optic Nerve Sheath.

A 30-year-old male presented with acute painful monocular diminution of vision, without any history of trauma or illness. Although the fundus image may resemble other retinal diseases, ophthalmic ultrasonography (US) was critical in detecting the problem. In the US, several scolexes were seen, indicating cysticerci, which are the larval stage of Tenia worm, infecting the optic nerve sheath at its scleral insertion. Only oral steroids were used because the inflammatory and toxic effects of albendazole-induced scolex-lysis on optic nerve function were uncertain. The authors reported no deteriora

Bilateral Idiopathic Sclerochoroidal Calcification: A Case Report.

Sclerochoroidal calcification (SCC) is a rare and often asymptomatic condition characterized by the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate in the sclera and choroid. It predominantly affects elderly individuals of Caucasian descent and is most often idiopathic, although it can be secondary to systemic disorders such as hyperparathyroidism or chronic renal disease. The lesions appear as irregular, white-yellow plaques located in the mid-periphery, typically along the vascular arcades. We present the case of an 80-year-old patient with bilateral idiopathic SCC, incidentally discovered during an oph

A UK-based retrospective study of fatal non-drowning asphyxia cases in dogs and cats.

Death by asphyxia is defined as the prolonged and fatal deprivation of oxygen and/or blood to the brain and other vital organs. Strangulation, smothering, hanging, drowning, choking, suffocation and chemical asphyxia are considered the main modalities in which asphyxiation can occur. The study of injury patterns is crucial for assisting veterinary forensic experts in identifying the cause and manner of death with a higher degree of certainty. A retrospective study of necropsy cases identified using the keywords "asphyxia", "anoxia", "hypoxia", "strangulation", "hanging", "choking", "smothering
