Retrospective Analysis of the Clinical Findings of 114 Horses with Eosinophilic Keratoconjunctivitis.

Eosinophilic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is an inflammatory eye disease of horses with an unknown cause and suspected immune-mediated pathogenesis. This single-center retrospective case series included 114 horses (163 affected eyes) examined at a German equine referral hospital from January 2012 to December 2020. Of these horses, 71 (62.3%) were Warmbloods, 77 (67.5%) were presented from July to September, and 49 (43.0%) had bilateral disease. The cornea was involved in 139 of 163 eyes (85.3%). During the study period, 114 EKC cases occurred among 5742 ophthalmology cases (2.0%), with an increa

Hierarchically sequential targeting nanoplatform suppresses NETosis-promoted angiogenesis for corneal neovascularization therapy.

Corneal neovascularization (CorNV) lacks effective therapies due to poor drug delivery and a complex inflammatory microenvironment, necessitating a deeper understanding of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms and the development of efficient delivery systems. Here we show that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are pathologically activated in CorNV and identify peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD4) as a key therapeutic target. To achieve coordinated inhibition of NETosis and downstream vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling, we engineer a reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsive

Serum Eye Drops for Ocular Surface Disease in Veterinary Ophthalmology: A Translational Review of Human and Veterinary Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Serum closely resembles natural tears in composition and contains higher growth factor levels than plasma in humans. Beyond its well-established anticollagenase properties, evidence from human ophthalmology suggests a broader therapeutic potential that may extend to the management of ocular surface diseases in animals. OBJECTIVES: This review examines the composition, mechanisms, and clinical applications of serum eye drops (SEDs) in human and veterinary ophthalmology, compares serum with plasma, and proposes a protocol for their formulation. RESULTS: SEDs provide a physiological

Mucoadhesive and ROS-responsive polymeric vesicles for anti-angiogenic therapy in corneal neovascularization.

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is a major cause of visual impairment worldwide and results from disruption of the cornea's angiogenic privilege by excessive angiogenic signaling and oxidative stress. Current clinical management relies on corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or anti-VEGF injections, yet these approaches often provide incomplete efficacy and are associated with adverse effects, invasiveness, or limited patient compliance. In this study, we developed a multifunctional polymeric vesicle platform, termed PPM, to address these limitations through combined anti-an

Charting the course of Sjögren's disease: A historical analysis of scientific progress.

Sjögren's disease (SjD) bears the name of the Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjögren. His 1933 doctoral thesis on keratoconjunctivitis sicca ignited interest, yet much remains under debate. SjD is an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the exocrine glands, particularly the salivary and lacrimal glands, leading to a dryness of the eyes and mouth. Diagnostic criteria have evolved significantly, with over 10 classification criteria proposed since 1965. From its inception, SjD was often overshadowed by other rheumatic diseases, struggling for recognition as a distinct autoimmune entity. Ear

Scleral perforation in a young adult with Burkitt lymphoma.

A male in his 20s with Burkitt lymphoma (BL) treated with chemotherapy was referred for lagophthalmos and left facial nerve palsy and re-evaluated weeks later due to acute scleral perforation. The perforated area was surgically closed, but on the first postoperative day, corneal thinning down to the Descemet membrane was noted, with iris adherence to the endothelium and progressive expansion of the affected sclera. Further globe reconstruction was deemed impossible; therefore, enucleation was performed. Histopathology revealed keratoconjunctivitis and acute perforative scleritis, though the aet

[Herpes Simplex Virus and Varicella-Zoster Virus Keratitis].

Herpesvirus infections of the cornea are among the leading infectious causes of corneal vision loss worldwide. Both herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) play a major role in the development of corneal disease. Following primary infection, both viruses establish lifelong latency in sensory ganglia and may be reactivated by triggering factors such as ultraviolet (UV) exposure, stress, fever, surgery, or immunosuppression. Clinically, ocular herpesvirus infections present with a broad spectrum of manifestations, and early differentiation between these entities is essential

Cicatricial Ectropion in the Setting of IL-13 Inhibition.

INTRODUCTION: Interleukin (IL)-13 is a key mediator of type 2 inflammation and an important therapeutic target in atopic dermatitis (AD). Although IL-4/IL-13 and IL-13 inhibitors demonstrate favorable safety profiles, ocular adverse events are recognized complications. Conjunctivitis is most commonly reported, and cicatricial ectropion has been described with IL-4/IL-13 inhibition. We report what is, to our knowledge, the first reported case of cicatricial ectropion associated with inhibition of soluble IL-13. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old man with longstanding AD involving 60% body surfa

Therapeutic potential of Jatimukuladi Varti Anjana in alkali burn-induced corneal injury and neovascularization in albino rats.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal transparency is maintained by its avascular nature, and disruption following injury can lead to corneal neovascularization (CNV), resulting in visual impairment. Although current treatment such as corticosteroids, NSAIDs, anti-VEGF agents, and surgical interventions are available, their use is often limited by adverse effects, recurrence, and cost. Jatimukuladdiv arti Anjana (JMV), a classical ayurvedic ophthalmic formulation with reported anti-inflammatory and tissue-healing properties, was evaluated for its therapeutic efficacy in an alkali burn-induced CNV model in alb

S2k-Guideline - Standardized application of the nasal and conjunctival provocation test on allergic diseases of the upper airways : of the German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology (DGAKI), German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (DGHNO-KHC), German Dermatological Society (DDG), German Society of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ), German Society of Ophthalmology (DOG), German Respiratory Society (DGP), German Society for Occupational and Environmental Medicine (DGAUM), German Society for Pediatric Allergology and Environmental Medicine (GPA), German Society for Pediatric Pulmonology (GPP), Ärzteverband Deutscher Allergologen (AeDA), and German Professional Association of Otorhinolaryngologists (BVHNO).

Broad evidence confirms that AR (ICD J30.3) is a chronic disease with high prevalence among children and adults worldwide. Its consequences, both from a public health perspective and at the level of the individual patient, are often underestimated, and the condition is inadequately treated. In addition, AR is often related to comorbidities with additional impact on diseases-severity. Allergen provocation of the easily accessible nasal (nasal allergen provocation test: NPT) or conjunctival mucosa (conjunctival allergen provocation test: CPT) reproduces the allergen-dependent, IgE-mediated aller

Identification of Fscn2 as a candidate gene regulating endothelial cytoskeletal organization and angiogenic competence through a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in mice.

PURPOSE: Polymorphisms in genes that regulate angiogenesis, notably vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFA) and basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2), play a major role in the susceptibility and progression of angiogenic diseases such as cancer and ocular neovascular disorders. Previous studies from our laboratory reported that genetic variation among different mouse strains alters their angiogenic responses to growth factors. In this study, we hypothesized that genetic diversity among inbred mouse strains could be compared using GWAS to identify candidate genes associated with differences

Numerical exploration of low lunar, long-lifetime orbits.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) arises from the epithelial lining of the oral cavity, hypopharynx, oropharynx, and larynx. There are several potential risk factors that cause the generation of HNSCC, including cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, betel quid chewing, inadequate nutrition, poor oral hygiene, HPV and Epstein-Barr virus, and Candida albicans infections. HNSCC has causative links to both environmental factors and genetic mutations, with the latter playing a more critical role in cancer progression. These molecular changes to epithelial cells include the inactivatio
