Peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) in autoimmune diseases: a severe ocular manifestation not always associated with systemic disease activity.

Peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) is a rare and severe ocular manifestation frequently associated with systemic autoimmune diseases. This retrospective two-center observational study including patients with PUK and a systemic autoimmune disease at two tertiary referral centres aimed to characterize clinical and histopathologic features, treatment strategies, relapses, and ocular outcomes of autoimmune-associated PUK, and to analyse its relationship with systemic disease activity. A total of 24 patients (35 eyes) were identified, 62.5 % female, with a median age of 58.5 years and a mean fol

Pigmented Curvularia Keratitis Adjacent to a Bifid Pterygium: A Case Report.

Fungal keratitis remains a major cause of corneal morbidity in the tropics, with dematiaceous fungi such as Curvularia representing an important subset. We report a case of Curvularia keratitis in a 55-year-old woman who presented with post-traumatic keratitis and prior use of topical corticosteroids. Examination revealed a bifid pterygium and a grayish-white stromal infiltrate with feathery margins located just anterior to the pterygium head. KOH mount and culture confirmed Curvularia species. The patient responded well to topical natamycin. This case underscores the importance of initiating

Efficacy of autologous, homologous, and heterologous blood serums in healing of chemically induced corneal ulcers in dogs: a clinical and ultrasonographic study.

Corneal ulcers, particularly from alkaline chemical injuries, are a leading ocular complication in animals, accounting for about 20.00% of emergency referrals. These burns damage the conjunctiva and cornea, causing deep ulcers, potential perforation, delayed healing, infections and blindness. Prompt treatment is crucial to accelerate healing and minimize complications like permanent opacity. This study compared the efficacy of blood serums (autologous, homologous, and heterologous) against standard treatment (N-acetylcysteine and ciprofloxacin eye drops) and a control group (Normal saline) in

An Uncommon Mould in an Uncommon Place: A Case of Scopulariopsis brevicaulis Keratitis From the Northern Himalayas, India.

Scopulariopsis brevicaulis is an uncommon cause of fungal keratitis, usually occurring after ocular trauma, and is associated with therapeutic difficulties because of its limited susceptibility to antifungal agents. We report the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with pain, redness, and watering of the left eye for one month following injury by iron foreign body particles during welding. Ocular examination revealed a corneal ulcer with hypopyon and markedly reduced visual acuity (2/60). Initial microscopic evaluation was negative for fungal elements; however, fungal culture after extende

Ocular Surface Ulceration Associated With an Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitor.

PURPOSE: To present the case of ocular surface ulceration in a patient receiving erlotinib for lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS: An 80-year-old woman presented with a corneal ulcer of the right eye in the setting of poor contact lens hygiene and overwear. During the initial treatment of her corneal ulcer, erlotinib therapy was held by her oncologist. After 1.5 months of treatment, the corneal infection resolved with full epithelialization. Erlotinib was then restarted, and she remained out of contact lenses. RESULTS: One week after reinitiation of erlotinib treatment, the patient presented with

Corneal Lesions Associated With Feline Herpesvirus-1 Modified Live Vaccine Strain F2 in Two Cats.

Feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) modified live vaccine (MLV) is designated as a core vaccine for cats. As reported here, two 2-month-old domestic short hair cats (Cat 1 and Cat 2; the two were littermates) initially presented with sneezing, nasal and ocular discharge, and ocular discomfort (Day 0), which had persisted since their vaccination. At 1.5 months of age, both cats were vaccinated with a vaccine containing the FHV-1 MLV strain F2 at another clinic. A few days later, they developed sneezing and ocular discharge almost simultaneously. Ten days after vaccination, they were diagnosed with all

Traditional Eye Medicine in Rural Somalia: Culturally Safe Harm Reduction to Prevent Corneal Blindness.

Traditional eye medicine (TEM) remains widely practiced across rural Somalia, where distance, poverty, limited eye care workforce, and low health literacy constrain access to timely biomedical services. Commonly reported practices include instillation of aloe vera liquid or gel, expressed human breast milk, honey, and plant derived sap or rubbed tree material to relieve redness, photophobia, and ocular pain. While these practices are culturally embedded and may be perceived as effective, the ocular surface is uniquely vulnerable to toxicity, microbial contamination, and delayed presentation, f

Retention of the foetal membranes (RFM) and post-partal endometritis are common problems in dairy cows. Among other things, the disease is characterized by a bacterial endometritis with aerobic as well as anaerobic bacteria. From an endocrine perspective, cows with RFM have high levels of 15-ketodihydro-PGF(2 alpha) (PG-metabolite) immediately after parturition but these levels fall rapidly within 2 weeks post-partum (early PG-metabolite elevation). After this decline, the PG-metabolite levels increase again and the levels (at this time of a lower magnitude) remain elevated during the period o

Advances in medical and surgical management of Acanthamoeba keratitis: a comprehensive review.

SUMMARYAcanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a rare but sight-threatening corneal infection with rising global incidence, largely driven by increased contact lens use. Management remains challenging due to limited therapeutic options, variable clinical responses, and a lack of standardized treatment guidelines. Diagnosis is frequently delayed because of the non-specific clinical presentation, and early use of topical corticosteroids can exacerbate disease severity and worsen outcomes. The formation of highly drug-resistant cysts in chronic infection further complicates treatment. Currently, prolonged
