Monocyte development inhibitor PRM-151 decreases corneal myofibroblast generation in rabbits.

This study investigated whether PRM-151 (Promedior, Inc., Malvern, PA), a recombinant form of human pentraxin-2 (PTX-2, also referred to as serum amyloid P, hSAP), that inhibits differentiation of circulating monocytes into fibrocytes and profibrotic macrophages, could modulate generation of myofibroblasts after opacity-producing corneal injury in rabbits, and, therefore, have potential to reduce or prevent haze after PRK. Nine diopter PRK for myopia was performed with the VISX S4 IR laser. Four groups of 6 animals were treated in masked fashion: Group 1: 30 μl of topical PRM-151 (20 mg/ml) 6

Unilateral Peters' anomaly with chorioretinal coloboma in the other eye.

An 18-year-old man presented with poor vision in both eyes that had been present since birth. Central corneal opacity and inferior peripheral sclerocornea with iridocorneal adhesion were observed upon anterior segment examination of the left eye. A coloboma of the iris was observed in the patient's right eye, which manifested as a small notch in the inferior pupillary margin and cataract. Fundus examination of the right eye showed a large inferior chorioretinal coloboma involving the optic disc and macula. It is essential to examine the fundus in detail, if possible, in cases of Peters' anomal

The clinical phenotype of trachomatous trichiasis in Ethiopia: not all trichiasis is due to entropion.

PURPOSE: Trachomatous trichiasis (TT) is usually described as a cicatricial entropion of the upper lid; however, other forms of trichiasis have been reported. This variation in clinical phenotype is potentially important for treatment guidelines. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the range of disease type and severity encompassed by TT. METHODS: Individuals presenting with TT to surgical treatment campaigns were examined by a single ophthalmologist using the Detailed WHO Trachoma Grading System. Additional features were graded, including type of trichiatic lashes (metaplastic

Epilation for trachomatous trichiasis and the risk of corneal opacification.

PURPOSE: Eight million people have trachomatous trichiasis (TT). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends entropion surgery for TT regardless of severity. However, epilation is widely practiced for treating minor TT (1-5 lashes touching the globe). We report the frequency and effectiveness of patient-initiated epilation and its relationship to corneal opacity. DESIGN: Cross-sectional baseline data of individuals recruited to 2 randomized, clinical trials. PARTICIPANTS: We included 2556 individuals (4310 eyes) with previously unoperated TT in ≥ 1 eye. METHODS: A single ophthalmologist

Confocal microscopy in ocular argyrosis.

PURPOSE: To identify the presence of silver deposits in the cornea using a new-generation confocal microscopy technique. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 70-year-old man, who had been a jeweler for many years, was referred to our center for assessment of corneal opacity and ocular pigmentation. Slit-lamp examination revealed grayish, dense confluent deposits in the central and peripheral cornea, deep stroma, and Descemet's membrane. On confocal microscopy, we observed typical images of hyperreflective keratocytes across the entire stromal surface and two hyperreflective plaques coinciding wi

Central toxic keratopathy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe recent evidence from the literature regarding central toxic keratopathy syndrome (CTK). RECENT FINDINGS: CTK describes a rare, self-limited, noninflammatory postsurgical condition that presents with central corneal opacity and a significant hyperopic shift. Although its cause remains uncertain, CTK bears a striking clinical resemblance to other more serious conditions and is, therefore, often misdiagnosed and mismanaged. Despite its noninflammatory nature, the overlapping clinical features CTK shares with other inflammatory and infectious processes have led some

Stromal interleukin-1 expression in the cornea after haze-associated injury.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether myofibroblasts or other cells in the stroma in the cornea produce interleukin (IL)-1alpha or IL-1beta that could modulate myofibroblast viability in corneas with haze after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Twenty-four female rabbits had haze-generating PRK for 9 diopters of myopia and were sacrificed at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks or 4 weeks after surgery. Corneal rims were removed, frozen in OCT at -80 degrees C, and analyzed by immunocytochemistry using primary antibodies to IL-1alpha, IL-1beta and alpha smooth muscle actin (SMA). Double immu

[Peter's anomaly, clinical and therapeutic aspects: case report].

Peter's anomaly consists in the most common congenital corneal opacity related to a malformation of the anterior segment of the eye. Its main characteristics are central leukoma and iridocorneal adherences at the area affected by the leukoma. It can be identified isolated or in association with other ocular or systemic abnormalities, and the prognostic tend to be worse in the latter cases. The etiology of Peter's anomaly remains uncertain, but the most likely causes are related to genetic, infectious, traumatic and toxic factors. A range of possible treatment strategies exists, though the effe

Neuro-ocular cutaneous syndrome: a case report.

Neuro-ocular cutaneous syndrome is a rare and little-known illness. It affects the ocular apparatus, the nervous system and the skin. The disease causes pathologies such as phacomatosis, which is a generic term used to describe small cutaneous neoformations, as well as other ectodermal organ malformations (ocular apparatus and central nervous system). The symptoms of this disease are ocular, neurological and dermatological and can include: corneal opacity, papillary coloboma, optical atrophy, epibulbar dermoids, corectopia, palpebral coloboma, frontoparietal alopecia, epilepsy, psychomotor del

Inherited corneal opacifications with an unusual distribution.

PURPOSE: To describe corneal opacities of a new type and distribution in a small family. METHODS: Family members were interviewed and examined to establish a pedigree and to detect any corneal abnormalities. RESULTS: Two family members presented with corneal opacities. Both had, in the very peripheral cornea, flat, greyish, rounded opacities, 20-200 microm in diameter, on the Descemet's membrane. In addition, the mother had the same type of opacities over the central cornea just inside the Bowman's layer. The remaining parts of the corneas were clear. Vision was unaffected and the opacities

Tyrosinemia produced by 2-(2-nitro-4-trifluoromethylbenzoyl)-cyclohexane-1,3-dione (NTBC) in experimental animals and its relationship to corneal injury.

2-(2-Nitro-4-trifluoromethylbenzoyl)-cyclohexane-1,3-dione (NTBC) is a potent inhibitor of rat liver 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) leading to tyrosinemia and corneal opacity. We examined the effect of NTBC on the extent of tyrosinemia and production of corneal lesions in the beagle dog, rabbit and rhesus monkey, as part of safety evaluation on this drug. A single oral dose of 10 mg NTBC/kg to beagle dogs or rabbits increased the concentration of tyrosine in plasma and aqueous humour of the eye, the tyrosinemia being both time- and dose-dependent. Hepatic HPPD was markedly inhibite

Type III secretion-dependent modulation of innate immunity as one of multiple factors regulated by Pseudomonas aeruginosa RetS.

Mutation of retS (rtsM) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PA103 reduces its virulence in both ocular and respiratory murine models of infection. In vitro, retS mutants exhibit loss of the ExsA-regulated type III secretion system (TTSS), reduced twitching motility, and a decrease in association with, invasion of, and survival within corneal epithelial cells. In addition, transcription of multiple other virulence genes is positively and negatively affected by retS mutation. Since our published data show that ExoU and ExoT, the two TTSS effectors encoded by strain PA103, each confer virulence in t

Malignant catarrhal fever in free-ranging cervids associated with OvHV-2 and CpHV-2 DNA.

Pathologic lesions were summarized in 18 free-ranging cervids (15 moose [Alces alces], two roe deer [Capreolus capreolus], and one red deer [Cervus elaphus]) diagnosed with malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) after examination at the National Veterinary Institute, Oslo 1982-2005. Eye lesions (conjunctivitis, corneal opacity, fibrin clots in the anterior eye chamber) were the most frequent gross finding. Erosive-ulcerative mucosal lesions in the nose and mouth were also commonly found. Histopathology revealed a nonpurulent vasculitis and perivasculitis in the central nervous system (CNS) typical of

Use of refractive direct ophthalmoscopy for estimation of refractive error.

The purpose of this study was to find if direct ophthalmoscopy, a simple technique, could be used to give an approximate value of the refractive correction for a patient. This would shorten the time and lessen the effort to be expended during the following retinoscopic examination done for finding the patient's refractive correction. The use of direct ophthalmoscopy for this specific purpose is especially desirable where retinoscopic examination is quite tedious, e.g. uncooperative patients like children, bed-ridden patients and mentally retarded subjects, in patients with a large central corn

Prevalence of cicatricial trachoma in an indigenous population of Central Australia: the Central Australian Trachomatous Trichiasis Study (CATTS).

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, resulting from conjunctival scarring, upper lid entropion and trichiasis, leading to corneal scarring and opacification. This study was designed to investigate the current prevalence of cicatricial trachoma in an indigenous population within Central Australia and help determine whether trachoma remains a public health issue. METHODS: Participants aged 40 and over were recruited from patients attending one of 16 remote ophthalmology clinics held at indigenous communities in Central Australia within the Northern Territory
