Evaluation of an opacity lensometer for determining corneal clarity following excimer laser photoablation.

The appearance of haze in the central cornea following photoablation with a 193 nm excimer laser is an important factor in the postoperative course of this procedure. Data from 37 human eyes treated with photorefractive keratectomy, 4 eyes treated with phototherapeutic keratectomy, and 5 untreated eyes were used to evaluate the ability of a commercially available opacity lensometer to provide an objective measure of corneal clarity. We found that the opacity lensometer was able to detect light scattered from the cornea but was not sufficiently sensitive to distinguish reliably among excimer-tr

[Comparison of tolerance to hydrophilic contact lenses made of Hema (37% H2O) and Hema-Degma (55%, 65% H2O) in the rabbit eye. I. Changes in corneal transparency due to disturbed hydration].

The authors compared on the rabbit eye the tolerance of hydrophilic contact lenses with equal parameters (0.2 mm central and peripheral thickness, 7.4 radius, 15 mm diameter) with a different degree of hydration (37% H2O-Hema), (55% and 65% H2O-Hema-Degma) during continuous wear for a period of two weeks (1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 14 days). Special attention was devoted to changes in the transparency of the cornea. Changes of the transparency due to wearing of contact lenses were due to changes of corneal hydration. The cause of increased corneal hydration were metabolic and later also morphological d

Characterization of a paramyxovirus isolated from the brain of a piglet in Mexico.

A virus morphologically resembling members of the family Paramyxoviridae has been isolated from the brain of a piglet with a central nervous disorder accompanied by pneumonia and corneal opacity. The virus, designated LPM, grows in a large variety of cultured cell types and elicits a cytopathic effect including formation of syncytia and cytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The virus has hemagglutinating, neuraminidase and hemolytic activities. Studies on experimental transmission showed that young pigs are susceptible to infection which induced a disease similar to that in natural cases. The virus ki

Cleft lip and palate, corneal opacities and profound psychomotor retardation. A newly recognized genetic syndrome?

Clinical histories and physical features of two sisters affected with a previously unreported syndrome are presented with illustrations. The manifestations were profound postnatal growth and psychomotor retardation, hydrocephaly, cleft lip and palate, corneal opacities, central nervous system impairment, and genitourinary anomalies. Four other siblings, two males and two females and the parents of the affected were examined and found to be normal. Infectious, metabolic, and chromosomal etiologies were excluded by appropriate studies. The most likely pattern of inheritance is autosomal recessiv

Corectopia with nystagmus, absent foveal reflexes and corneal changes.

A family is described with corectopia, nystagmus, absent foveal reflexes, and corneal changes inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Other abnormalities found in this family include microcornea, Bitot's spots, and iris colobomas. Faint superficial opacities and fine superficial vessels were found in the peripheral cornea of younger family members. Older family members showed an increase in the density of the superficial opacities and areas of stromal thinning were found in the 60-year-old proband. Corneal vessels and progression centrally. Full-thickness stromal opacities and changes have

Anterior segment and retinal pigmentary abnormalities in arteriohepatic dysplasia.

Arteriohepatic dysplasia (AHD, Alagille's syndrome) is presumed to be one of the six known familial intrahepatic cholestatic syndromes, all of which present with neonatal jaundice or failure to thrive, or both. Accurate early diagnosis of the proper syndrome is important, as arteriohepatic dysplasia has a good prognosis, whereas the other syndromes usually lead to death in infancy or early adulthood. Posterior embryotoxon was found in all five of our patients and may be one of the hallmarks of this syndrome. Axenfeld's anomaly was present in three of five patients, and retinal pigmentary abnor

Peter's anomaly with congenital aphakia.

An Inuit boy was born with microphthalmia and a central corneal opacity of the right globe. Histopathologic examination revealed a central adherent corneal leukoma (Peter's anomaly) as well as absence of the lens. We are not aware of other well documented histopathologic reports of congenital aphakia and Peter's anomaly occurring in the same eye.

Scanning electron microscopy of congenital corneal leukomas (Peters' anomaly).

Specimens of three corneas in two patients with Peter's anomaly were obtained at the time of penetrating keratoplasty and studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In one patient, the anomaly was monocular, and the endothelial surface showed a central defect in Descemet's layer with isolated rounded defects in the midperiphery. Fine collagenous material covered the posterior surface. The other two specimens were obtained from a patient with rubella syndrome without cataracts. The cornea showed malformation of Descemet's membrane with fibroblastic overgrowth on the endothelial l

Heightened resistance of athymic, nude (nu/nu) mice to experimental Pseudomonas aeruginosa ocular infection.

BALB/c-derived athymic, nude (nu/nu) mice exhibited a heightened natural resistance to experimental corneal infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa when compared with their heterozygote (nu/+) littermates. Stereomicroscopic examination of the eyes of nu/nu mice 24 h after corneal trauma and topical bacterial application revealed slightly cloudy corneas (iris visible), whereas nu/+ littermate corneas were opaque (iris not visible). Nu/+ mice failed to resolve the infection, and endophthalmitis and shrinkage of the infected eye occurred in these mice within 2 weeks after experimental Pseudomonas i

Peters-Rieger's syndrome.

The joint occurrence of Peter's anomaly, congenital central deep corneal opacity with an enterior cone-shaped polar cataract, and Rieger's anomaly, hypoplasia of iris stroma, dyscoria, and iridocorneal adhesions in the angle of the anterior chamber, is described. The term Peters-Riger's syndrome is proposed for this clinical association. Associated ocular anomalies which apparently have not been previously mentioned in the literature were dysversion of the optic disc, ganglionic neuroretinal hypoplasia (hypoplasia of the optic nerve), and downward ectopia of the macula. Other associated ocular

Ocular malformations in human fetuses with external malformations.

Sixty undamaged human fetuses with various nonocular external malformations were selected randomly from a large number of fetuses collected by the Department of Anatomy Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University, and examined macroscopically and stereomicroscopically for ocular and other external and internal malformations. Eighteen fetuses (30 percent) showed ocular malformations of the following types: approximated eyes (two cases), approximated eyes plus microncornea (one case), microphthalmia (eight cases), microcornea (three cases), corneal opacity (one case), transparent sclera (two cases), a

Pathogenesis of the mouse keratitis produced with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

For the purpose of studying the pathogenesis of corneal infection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, was examined virulence of elastase and protease producing strains or non-producing strains of the bacteria by using the cornea of mouse. The cornea of mouse was experimentally incised, and then P. aeruginosa cultures were dropped once onto it. As a result serious ulcers were caused over the entire cornea, and abscesses in its central area, by 10(5) and 10(7) viable cells of the enzymes producing strains IID 1210 and NO-5 of P. aeruginosa, respectively. Histological destruction, enlargement and cellular
