Short-Term Effects of Swimming Goggle Use on Anterior Segment Parameters in Patients with Keratoconus.

Background and Objectives: Keratoconus is a bilateral but often asymmetric ectatic corneal disease characterized by progressive thinning, increased curvature, and conical shape of the cornea. Previous studies have reported that the use of swimming goggles in patients with keratoconus can lead to increased intraocular pressure (IOP) and a transient reduction in anterior chamber volume (ACV), potentially affecting anterior segment morphology. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of periorbital pressure induced by swimming goggles on corneal parameters in keratoconic eyes. Material

Corneal Cross-Linking in Keratoconus: Comparative Analysis of Standard, Accelerated and Transepithelial Protocols.

Keratoconus is a progressive, non-inflammatory corneal ectasia characterized by stromal thinning and conical protrusion. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) remains the only proven treatment to halt its progression. This review compares the mechanisms, efficacy, and safety of standard (Dresden), accelerated, and transepithelial (including iontophoretic) protocols, with particular emphasis on pediatric keratoconus. Studies from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were comprehensively reviewed. Standard CXL remains the gold standard due to its strong biomechanical effect and long-term stability.

Childhood blindness prevention in Aotearoa New Zealand.

AIM: While less common than adult blindness, childhood blindness has a significant burden in terms of the total number of "blind years". We aim to determine if there is scope for improved strategies in the prevention of childhood blindness in Aotearoa New Zealand. METHOD: We conducted a review of New Zealand childhood blindness data. RESULTS: In New Zealand, there is a paucity of data on childhood blindness. However, significant scope remains for prevention through optimising maternal health, neonatal care, increasing uptake of immunisations and attendance at vision screening programmes, as

Analysis of Keratoconus-Related Phenotypes in Two Pcsk1 Mouse Models.

PURPOSE: Previously, a variant within the Pcsk1 gene was found to segregate with the keratoconus (KC) phenotype in whole genome sequencing of a four-generation family. We aimed to evaluate a potential relation between the Pcsk1 gene and corneal phenotype in mouse models. METHODS: Two strains of Pcsk1 mice, one with a knockout (KO) and one with an N222D point mutation, were bred. Central corneal thickness (CCT) was determined using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in PC1/3+/+ (n = 12), PC1/3+/K^ (n = 14), PC1/3K^/K^ (n = 5), PC1+/+ (n = 8), PC1+/ N222D (n = 15), and PC1 N2

Case Report: Novel ADAMTSL2 compound heterozygous mutations in geleophysic dysplasia with bilateral glaucoma and keratoconus-like corneal ectasia.

Geleophysic dysplasia represents an exceedingly uncommon autosomal recessive skeletal disorder marked by profound growth restriction, contractures affecting multiple joints, and cardiac valve abnormalities. The molecular foundation involves ADAMTSL2 gene mutations disrupting extracellular matrix architecture. We document a 29-year-old Taiwanese woman followed longitudinally for 25 years, presenting with severe short stature measuring 141.2 cm, widespread joint contractures, thoracolumbar scoliosis, and distinctive gait abnormalities. Whole-exome sequencing identified compound heterozygous ADAM
