Pigment Dispersion Syndrome and Pigmentary Glaucoma: New Clinical Gradation and Current Therapeutic Strategies.

The classic triad of clinical findings in pigment dispersion syndrome was described decades ago. It consists of radial, spoke-like iris transillumination defects, pigment deposits on the corneal endothelium known as the Krukenberg spindle, and a densely and homogenously pigmented trabecular meshwork. PDS occurs approximately three times more frequently in young myopic men than in women and is most often identified between 30 and 50 years of age. The diagnostic evaluation does not differ from the standard examination performed in patients with suspected glaucomatous optic neuropathy. However, i

Explantation of Implantable Collamer Lenses due to high intraocular pressure in a highly hyperopic patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation is an effective treatment for correcting high hyperopia. However, late anterior segment complications remain insufficiently characterized. The simultaneous occurrence of angle narrowing, pigment dispersion, and intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation nearly two decades after implantation of a non-central-port ICL is exceptionally rare. This case illustrates the diagnostic and surgical challenges of late-onset angle narrowing in hyperopic eyes and outlines strategies to minimize iris injury during ICL explantation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-ye

Quantitative gonioscopic assessment of anterior chamber angle remodeling using the spaeth classification after Schlemm's canal-based MIGS (3T) in POAG: a one-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Trabeculotome Tunneling Trabeculoplasty (3T) is a recently developed Schlemm's canal-based minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) designed to reconstruct the trabecular meshwork-Schlemm's canal pathway to facilitate aqueous humor outflow, while minimizing disruption to ocular surface structures. Although this procedure is gaining clinical use in China, evidence regarding its long-term efficacy, safety, and anatomical impact remains limited. Few studies have systematically assessed postoperative changes in the anterior chamber angle, which plays a key role in intraocular pressur

Visually significant corneal deposits associated with rifabutin therapy for Bartonella henselae.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical and histopathological features of a case of visually significant corneal deposits due to rifabutin therapy used to treat Bartonella henselae. OBSERVATIONS: A 73-year-old male with a history of recurrent bartonellosis on rifabutin therapy presented with glare and haloes in both eyes. Slit lamp examination showed pigmented corneal deposits, higher in density and larger in size in the periphery than the center. Rifabutin was discontinued, but the corneal deposits and visual symptoms persisted more than one year later. The patient underwent a penetrating keratoplas

From an apposition-like stage to a superposition eye: developmental assembly of the nocturnal visual system in the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella.

Superposition compound eyes are a hallmark of many nocturnal beetles and moths and represent a major evolutionary innovation for dim-light. Although their optical organization has been extensively documented, the developmental processes underlying their assembly remain poorly understood. Here, we traced the morphogenesis of the compound eyes in the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella from the prepupal stage to adult emergence using transmission electron microscopy. Early ommatidia adopt an apposition-like arrangement, with crystalline cones in direct contact with distal retinulae. The retinul

Restoration of impaired lysosomal function mitigates drusen-like deposit formation and cell death in Malattia Leventinese.

Malattia Leventinese (MAL) is an inherited macular degeneration disorder characterized by retinal drusen formation in adolescence, leading to vision loss. A mutation in the fibulin-3 gene (EFEMP1) causes MAL; however, the mechanisms underlying disease onset and drusen formation remain unclear. In this study, we generated induced pluripotent stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial (iPSC-RPE) cells from a patient with MAL to investigate disease mechanisms and potential therapies. MAL iPSC-RPE exhibited fibulin-3 and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) aggregation, increased endoplasmic reticulum stress

A novel founder variant in BEST1 gene causing autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy (ARB) is a rare retinal dystrophy caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous null variants in the BEST1 gene. Clinically, ARB presents with variable features including central visual impairment, global photoreceptor dysfunction (as indicated by abnormal full-field ERG), and a significantly reduced electro-oculogram (EOG) light rise, a hallmark of bestrophinopathy. Fundus examination reveals widespread retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) disturbance, vitelliform deposits in the posterior pole (more clearly visualized with fundus autofluorescence)

Unravelling CYP4V2: Clinical features, genetic insights, pathogenic mechanisms and therapeutic strategies in Bietti crystalline corneoretinal dystrophy.

Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) comprise a spectrum of disease phenotypes with genetic heterogeneity and clinical phenotypic diversity. Bietti crystalline corneoretinal dystrophy (BCD) represents a distinct IRD subtype characterized by crystalline deposits in the retina. Although rare in Western populations, BCD ranks among the most prevalent IRDs in East Asia, affecting an estimated 124,000 to 377,000 individuals worldwide. As a severe type of IRD, BCD demonstrates accelerated progression and currently lacks effective treatment. The BCD disease is caused by a biallelic mutation in the CY
