A 37-year-old woman had bilateral hyperopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Six months postoperatively, an epithelial pigmentation ring pattern was identified on both corneas. The appearance of the ring pattern was similar to the iron deposits of the Fleischer ring of keratoconus. While corneal iron deposits in various patterns have been reported after other forms of ocular therapeutic and refractive surgery, this is the first report of the association between hyperopic LASIK and a corneal iron line, which we have called the "pseudo-Fleischer ring."

PURPOSE: To examine the effect of vitamins and trace elements on ocular tissue.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats or mice were fed diets deficient in the trace elements Zn, Cu, Mn, Se, Mg, and Cr or in vitamins A, B12, C, and E. In some rats Al and vitamin A were injected in excessive amounts. We studied the conjunctiva, cornea, retina, and optic nerve with a light microscope, transmission and scanning electron microscopes, an energy dispersive X-ray analyser, and an ion microscope. Histochemical, cytochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques were applied to the pathological specimens.

PURPOSE: To report a new corneal iron deposit after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
METHODS: Two patients with symptomatic persistent steep central islands were noted to have a corneal iron ring at 6 months to 1 year after surgery. This is different from the central iron spot noted in most patients at 1 year.

METHODS: The retina from an 80-year-old patient donor was prepared for light and electron microscopy, including special stains and immunocytochemistry. The authors reviewed the files of 37 patients under 15 years of age (22 boys and 15 girls) in order to study the long-term efficacy and tolerance of amiodarone therapy. In six patients we reviewed the clinical, microbiologic, and histopathologic findings of seven hydrophilic contact lenses that had been infiltrated by fungi. Three patients had visual blurring or irritation and redness while wearing a contaminated lens; of these, two were unaware of any lens deposits. Iron lines in the corneal epithelium are well-documented clinical signs in various circumstances. After photorefractive keratectomy, a new type of iron deposit can be found: a central round spot that occurred in more than 80% of cases of 1 year after surgery. It can be recognized at the slitlamp 6 months after surgery, and its incidence is related to the amount of attempted refractive change. In otherwise clear corneas, the central iron spot is the only clinical sign of a previously performed photorefractive keratectomy.
