PURPOSE: To assess whether laser treatment to the retinal pigment epithelium anterior to drusen in eyes of patients with EFEMP1-related maculopathy affects visual acuity, deposit volume, and retinal sensitivity.
DESIGN: Prospective, interventional case series.
METHODS: In 11 patients with autosomal dominant drusen and confirmed disease-causing EFEMP1 mutation, the worse-seeing eye was treated with Argon green laser (10 to 15 laser spots; 200-μm spot size, 0.1-second duration, 80 to 120 mW). Patients were examined before treatment as well as 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the procedure. Clinica

Bietti crystalline corneoretinal dystrophy (BCD, MIM 210370) is a type of hereditary retinal disorder which commonly occurs in China. It is known that mutations in the CYP4V2 gene result in BCD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the case of a Chinese family and characterize the polymorphisms of the CYP4V2 gene. A 29-year-old male (the son of a Chinese family) with typical clinical symptoms of BCD and his family were recruited into this study. Ophthalmologic examination, including best-corrected visual acuity, slit-lamp, and fundus examination with dilated pupils, was conducted to de

We present the case of a 52-year-old female patient who presented with bilateral loss of vision over the course of several years. Funduscopy revealed multiple drusen in a "honeycomb"-like configuration at the entire posterior pole and in the peripapillary region. Autofluorescence and fluorescence angiography (FLA) showed multiple hyperfluorescent defects which show no leakage due to staining of the drusen-like lesions. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed a marked irregularity of the photoreceptor-retinal pigment epithelium complex. Electroretinography (ERG) was without pathological fin

PURPOSE: To determine whether resurfacing submacular human Bruch's membrane with a cell-deposited extracellular matrix (ECM) improves retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) survival.
METHODS: Bovine corneal endothelial (BCE) cells were seeded onto the inner collagenous layer of submacular Bruch's membrane explants of human donor eyes to allow ECM deposition. Control explants from fellow eyes were cultured in medium only. The deposited ECM was exposed by removing BCE. Fetal RPE cells were then cultured on these explants for 1, 14, or 21 days. The explants were analyzed quantitatively by light micros

Bilateral acute depigmentation of the iris syndrome (BADI syndrome) is a new clinical entity. Young females from 20 to 45 years of age are most commonly affected. It is characterized by bilateral nontransilluminating depigmentation of the iris stroma. During the acute phase, this clinical entity also combines with red painful eye, pigmentation of the trabecular meshwork, anterior chamber flare, circulating pigment, and pigmented deposit on the endothelium cornea. At the acute stage, the symptoms are controlled with topical corticosteroid treatment. The prognosis is good. We report a 41-year-ol

A 34-year-old man presented with reduction and distortion of vision in both the eyes. The best-corrected vision was 20/20 parts, N6 in either eye. The external and slit lamp examination of both the eyes was unremarkable. The fundus examination showed multiple intraretinal crystalline deposits at the posterior pole, extending up to midperiphery, tortuous retinal blood vessels with S-shaped deflections, and absent foveal reflex in both the eyes. There were no corneal crystals, and the color vision was defective in both the eyes. Fundus autofluorescence and fundus fluorescein angiogram (FFA) were

PURPOSE: To report a case of presumed bilateral corneal copper deposition secondary to oral contraceptive use.
METHODS: A 23-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of bilateral corneal opacities. The location of the deposits deep in Descemet's membrane and appearance made copper deposition a likely consideration.
RESULTS: Subsequent laboratory results revealed an elevated serum copper level (189 μg/dL). Other causes of cupremia were subsequently ruled out, and the patient's corneal copper deposition was attributed to her oral contraceptive use. With cessation of the oral contraceptive, h

Stargardt disease (STGD1) is an autosomal-recessively inherited condition often associated with mutations in ABCA4 and characterized by accumulation of autofluorescent lipofuscin deposits in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Non-invasive imaging techniques including fundus autofluorescence (FAF), spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) have the potential to improve understanding of vision loss in patients with STGD. We describe a comprehensive approach to the study of patients with STGD. Measures of retinal structure a
