Pigmented deposits on a Boston keratoprosthesis from topical ibopamine.

PURPOSE: To report a case of pigmented deposits on a type I Boston keratoprosthesis (KPro) associated with the use of topical ibopamine as a treatment for hypotony. METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: The dopamine-like agent ibopamine caused black deposits on the bandage lens and on the front plate of the Boston KPro that resulted in reduced visual acuity. Change to a daily disposable contact lens and regular cleaning of the KPro front plate with diluted baby shampoo eliminated this problem. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of this complication with topical ibopamine us

Pigment deposition of cosmetic contact lenses on the cornea after intense pulsed-light treatment.

We report a case of corneal deposition of pigments from cosmetic contact lenses after intense pulsed-light (IPL) therapy. A 30-year-old female visited our outpatient clinic with ocular pain and epiphora in both eyes; these symptoms developed soon after she had undergone facial IPL treatment. She was wearing cosmetic contact lenses throughout the IPL procedure. At presentation, her uncorrected visual acuity was 2/20 in both eyes, and the slit-lamp examination revealed deposition of the color pigment of the cosmetic contact lens onto the corneal epithelium. We scraped the corneal epithelium alon

Methods of model calibration: observations from a mathematical model of cervical cancer.

Continuing with comparative genomic exploration of worldwide butterfly fauna, we use all protein-coding genes as they are retrieved from the whole genome shotgun sequences for phylogeny construction. Analysis of these genome-scale phylogenies projected onto the taxonomic classification and the knowledge about butterfly phenotypes suggests further refinements of butterfly taxonomy that are presented here. As a general rule, we assign most prominent clades of similar genetic differentiation to the same taxonomic rank, and use criteria based on relative population diversification and the extent o

Long-term ocular consequences of sulfur mustard in seriously eye-injured war veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Sulfur mustard (SM) has been used as a dangerous chemical warfare agent since the early 20th century. Although many descriptive studies about SM-induced ocular injuries are present in the medical literature, few of them have been conducted over a large group with serious ocular involvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted on 149 severe SM-intoxicated war veterans. Ocular history, anterior and posterior segment findings using a slit lamp, and direct and indirect ophthalmoscopic findings were recorded. Severity of the disease was also recorded based on

Gangliosides' protection against lysosomal pathology of synucleinopathies.

BACKGROUND: Alkaptonuria is a rare metabolic disorder, an autosomal recessive disease caused by the deficiency of an enzyme, homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase. As a consequence, there is an accumulation of homogentisic acid, which deposits in connective tissues, leading to ochronotic arthropathy. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, a 35-year-old man who was diagnosed as having alkaptonuria in 2023 at the National Institutes of Health, underwent urine analysis that showed a peak homogentisic acid level of 3383 mmol/mol creatinine. He reported that 20 days prior to admission, he woke up at night due t

Evaluation of adenovirus-delivered human CD59 as a potential therapy for AMD in a model of human membrane attack complex formation on murine RPE.

PURPOSE: Complement-mediated damage to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), Bruch membrane, and choroid has been associated with pathogenesis in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The terminal step of complement activation involves lysis of cells by the insertion of the membrane attack complex (MAC) in the plasma membrane. The hypothesis that local overexpression of human CD59 (hCD59) delivered by an adenovirus (Ad) vector to primary murine RPE cells in vitro, RPE in vivo, or cornea ex vivo protects those cells from human MAC deposition and lysis was tested. METHODS: A humanized model o

[Ocular ochronosis. A case report].

Ochronosis or alkaptonuria is a rare inherited disease. It is characterized by the deposition of dark pigments in collagen-rich tissues, which leads to clinical manifestations such as arthropathy. The ochronotic pigment can be found in the sclera, the conjunctiva, and the limbic cornea. Vision is usually not affected. We report the case of 47-year-old patient who complained of lower back pain. Ophthalmologic examination showed dark pigments in the conjunctiva. The increased levels of homogentisic acid in urine confirmed the diagnosis of ochronosis.

Bietti's crystalline dystrophy in Asians: clinical, angiographic and electrophysiological characteristics.

This article describes nine Chinese patients with Bietti's crystalline dystrophy, including two families, one consisting of three siblings and the other a pair of sisters. All patients had the classic refractile deposits located in all layers of the retina, with varying degrees of pigment epithelium atrophy. However, paralimbal crystals were not seen in the anterior corneal stroma. We describe clinical, angiographical and electrophysiological characteristics, and also review the literature on Bietti's crystalline dystrophy. All patients had full eye examination, including best corrected visual

Cone rod dystrophies.

Cone rod dystrophies (CRDs) (prevalence 1/40,000) are inherited retinal dystrophies that belong to the group of pigmentary retinopathies. CRDs are characterized by retinal pigment deposits visible on fundus examination, predominantly localized to the macular region. In contrast to typical retinitis pigmentosa (RP), also called the rod cone dystrophies (RCDs) resulting from the primary loss in rod photoreceptors and later followed by the secondary loss in cone photoreceptors, CRDs reflect the opposite sequence of events. CRD is characterized by primary cone involvement, or, sometimes, by concom

Influence of keratocytes and retinal pigment epithelial cells on the mechanical properties of polyester-based tissue engineering micropatterned films.

In this paper the mechanical properties of micropatterned polyester films prepared to serve as tissue engineering scaffolds of cornea were examined. Films were prepared by solvent casting of blends of poly(l-lactide-co-d,l-lactide) and poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid-co-3-hydroxyvaleric acid), on a micropatterned silicon template. They were seeded with keratocytes or retinal pigment epithelial cells and subjected to tensile testing to assess the contribution of cells and the deposited extra-cellular matrix (ECM) to the mechanical properties of the scaffold. In all the tests, the films used were wet

Ophthalmic manifestations of multiple myeloma.

BACKGROUND: The ophthalmic manifestations of multiple myeloma can be seen in practically every ocular structure. Ocular findings may be the first manifestations of the disease. It may also occur as one of the extramedullary manifestations of the disease or as the first sign of insufficient chemotherapy. Multiple myeloma may cause ocular pathology by direct infiltration or as extramedullary plasmacytomas resulting in displacement or compression of tissues, by causing hyperviscosity syndrome, and by immunoglobulin light chain deposition in ocular tissues. OBJECTIVE: To outline the ophthalmic ma
