Corneal cross-linking is a photopolymerization technique traditionally used to strengthen corneal tissue. Corneal cross-linking utilizes riboflavin (vitamin B2) as a photosensitizer and ultraviolet-A light (UVA) to create strong covalent bonds within the corneal stroma, increasing tissue stiffness. Multiple studies have demonstrated corneal cross-linking's effectiveness in treating corneal ectasia, a progressive, degenerative, and non-inflammatory thinning disorder, as quantified by key tomographic, refractive, and visual parameters. Since its introduction two decades ago, corneal cross-linkin

Cell injection therapy is emerging as an alternative to treat corneal endothelial dysfunction (CED) and to avoid corneal scarring due to bullous keratopathy. However, establishing a standardized culture procedure that provides appropriate cell yield while retaining functional features remains a challenge. Here, we describe a detailed framework obtained from in vitro culture of human corneal endothelial cells (HCECs) and comparative in vivo experimental models for CED treatment with a new cell tracking approach. Two digestion methods were compared regarding HCEC morphology and adhesion. The eff

PURPOSE: It has been reported that corneal endothelial cells (CEC) decrease faster when the tip of the Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) tube is inserted into the anterior chamber than into the vitreous cavity. We investigated whether surgically relocating the tip of the BGI tube from the anterior chamber to the vitreous cavity could reduce CEC loss.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a single facility retrospective cohort study. The inclusion criteria were the CEC density less than 1500 cells/mm2 and the CEC reduction ratio was greater than 10%/year. The subjects were 11 consecutive patients that

PURPOSE: Ripasudil, a rho-kinase inhibitor, has gained popularity as an adjunctive therapy after Descemet stripping only to hasten visual recovery. Ripasudil has been shown to increase corneal endothelial cell proliferation and intercellular adhesion, and decrease endothelial cell apoptosis. We present 4 cases in which persistent corneal edema after various anterior segment surgeries was successfully treated with topical ripasudil, and 1 case in which corneal edema did not improve with use of ripasudil.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review revealed 5 patients treated with topical ripasudil for

Fungal keratitis is a severe corneal infection, and the causative fungi include various rare fungal species. Fungal keratitis caused by Talaromyces species has yet to be reported, and there is no information about this fungus as a cause of keratitis. A 77-year-old man developed fungal keratitis while waiting for a donor cornea due to bullous keratopathy in his left eye. Fungal culture of a corneal scraping grew filamentous fungi, which were morphologically identified as Paecilomyces species. The corneal infection did not improve after topical administration of 1% voriconazole, and ribosomal DN
