PURPOSE: Ocular injuries due to Hymenoptera venom are uncommon and most injuries occur on the ocular surface. We reported two rare cases of corneal endothelial damage caused by hornet venom that was sprayed, not injected, through stinging in the eye.
OBSERVATIONS: Case 1: A 57-year-old male patient was injured when a hornet sprayed venom into his left eye. He was referred to our hospital because the edoema and epithelial erosion of the cornea persisted. The patient presented with bullous keratopathy, asymmetrical iris atrophy, irreversible mydriasis, and glaucoma. His cataract progressed, and

The amniotic membrane is a single epithelial layer of the placenta. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-scarring, anti-angiogenic and possibly bactericidal properties. The basement membrane of the amniotic membrane acts as a substrate to encourage healing and re-epithelialisation. It has been used in many ocular surface diseases including persistent epithelial defects (corneal or conjunctival), chemical or thermal burns, limbal stem cell deficiency, cicatrising conjunctivitis, ocular graft versus host disease, microbial keratitis, corneal perforation, bullous keratopathy, dry eye disease, corneal h

This article presents a retrospective analysis of the research findings by professor A.A. Kasparov, who developed and implemented a novel approach to treating ocular herpes. The treatment system is fundamentally different from the conventional chemotherapeutic approach and revolves around non-specific immunotherapy using an endogenous interferon inducer - a biosynthetic complex of polyriboadenylic and polyribouridylic acids, known as Poludan. This approach also incorporates personalized cell therapy based on Poludan, along with herpes vaccine aimed at preventing recurrence. The regenerative an

BACKGROUND: Epithelial downgrowth is a rare complication after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), which usually leads to poor visual outcome despite multiple available options of treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man underwent DSAEK procedure due to pseudophakic bullous keratopathy. Three months later, the patient presented with gradual visual loss; slit-lamp examination revealed detachment and folding of the DSAEK lenticule, which was confirmed by anterior segment optical coherence tomography. On confocal scanning, epithelial cell sheets were detected in

Bullous keratopathy is a serious blinding eye disease requiring corneal endothelial transplantation. However, the lack of cornea donors forced us to search for new sources of functional corneal endothelial cells (CECs). In our previous study, we have successfully differentiated the SKPs into CEC-like cells with unclear mechanism. The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is essential for maintaining embryonic eye development and formation. This study aimed to clarify the activity of Wnt/β-catenin pathway in the process of skin-derived precursors (SKPs) differentiating into CEC-like cells. We showed

Donor to host transmission of infectious agents is a well-recognized entity, more commonly related to Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK) than to Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK), that involves complications ranging from interface keratitis to endophthalmitis. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to identify the published articles until December 2020 reporting cases of endophthalmitis secondary to corneal graft contamination in posterior lamellar keratoplasties (DSAEK and DMEK) along with donor characteristics, microbiological profile, treatment and outcomes. Each identified article was

Penetrating keratoplasty is a tissue transplant commonly performed around the world. For over a century, penetrating keratoplasty has been the standard method of treatment for many corneal diseases causing visual impairment. Recently, lamellar anterior keratoplasty (LAK) or lamellar endothelial (LEK) have become preferable options, resulting in fewer complications and faster functional rehabilitation. While penetrating keratoplasty is less frequently indicated, in favor of these lamellar grafts, it has not necessarily become obsolete, and its use remains appropriate for its chosen indications.

Currently, brachytherapy is the most commonly used therapeutic approach for uveal melanomas. Surgical resection by means of endoresection or exoresection is an alternative approach. The present report recounts our experience over 15 years in the treatment of uveal melanoma using a combined approach of resection surgery with brachytherapy. This is a single-center observational retrospective cohort study in which we describe clinical outcomes, complications and survival in 35 cases of melanoma of the iris or the ciliary body after a combination of surgery and brachytherapy or brachytherapy alone
