Insights and future directions for the application of perinatal derivatives in eye diseases: A critical review of preclinical and clinical studies.

Perinatal derivatives (PnD) are gaining interest as a source for cell-based therapies. Since the eye is easily accessible to local administration, eye diseases may be excellent candidates to evaluate novel therapeutic approaches. With this work, we performed a systematic review of published preclinical and clinical studies addressing PnD in the treatment of ocular diseases. We have set two specific objectives: (i) to investigate the current level of standardization in applied technical procedures in preclinical studies and (ii) to assess clinical efficacy in clinical trials. Hereto, we selecte

Graft dislocation following Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty: a comparative cohort analysis of Optisol GS and organ culture preserved corneas.

Previous studies have suggested risk factors for graft dislocation after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK). We aimed to investigate the influence of eye bank storage solution as a risk factor for graft dislocation, as this could have significant implications for eye banking practices. This retrospective analysis compared cohorts from the QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax, Canada (donor corneas preserved in Optisol GS) and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia (donor corneas preserved in organ culture). Patient, surgical, and post-operativ

Penetrating Keratoplasty: Indications and Graft Survival by Geographic Region.

Corneal transplantation, or penetrating keratoplasty (PK), is the most common form of solid-organ transplantation performed worldwide. Here, we evaluated the indications for PK and rates of transplant survival around the world by geographic region. We conducted a literature search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases and identified 155 relevant studies from 41 countries published between 1987 and 2021. The most common indications for PK were keratoconus in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and Central and South America, bullous keratopathy in North America, a

[Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty after implantation of glaucoma drainage devices].

UNLABELLED: Secondary decompensation of corneal endothelium, including transplanted, is a frequent long-term complication of glaucoma drainage surgery. According to literature data, after implantation of a glaucoma drainage device into the anterior chamber, the speed of endothelial cells density (ECD) loss increases significantly. PURPOSE: To study the possibility of performing modified Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) with maximum graft diameter, and to assess its short-term effectiveness in the treatment of bullous keratopathy (BK) in the presence of a glaucoma drainage dev

MiR-302a Regenerates Human Corneal Endothelial Cells against IFN-γ-Induced Cell Death.

Damage to human corneal endothelial cells (hCECs) leads to bullous keratopathy because these cells cannot be regenerated in vivo. In this study, we investigated the protective role of microRNA (miR)-302a against interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-induced senescence and cell death of hCECs. Cultured hCECs were transfected with miR-302a and treated with IFN-γ (20 ng/mL) to evaluate the protective effect of miR-302a on IFN-γ-induced cell death. Senescence was evaluated by the senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) assay, and the secretion of senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) factors wa

Posterior Segment Air Injection-Assisted Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty in Pseudophakic and Vitrectomized Eyes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to present a novel technique for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in pseudophakic and vitrectomized eyes. METHODS: The sterile air was injected into the posterior eye segment (anterior vitreous cavity) as a barrier to prevent the fluid of the vitreous cavity flowing into the anterior chamber, levitating the iris-lens diaphragm to flatten the anterior chamber during the surgery. This approach assists in the unfolding of the donor endothelial graft, helping to perform DMEK surgery on patients with a posterior intraocular lens (IOL) and vitrectomy. RES
