Iridocorneal Endothealial Syndrome. Case Reports.

AIM: Iridocorneal endothelial (ICE) syndrome is a rare disease characterized by abnormal proliferation and structural changes of the endothelium, obliteration of the iridocorneal angle, and anomalies of the iris. The consequence of these changes is secondary glaucoma and corneal decompensation. The etiology is unclear, and the syndrome more commonly affects middle-aged women. CASE REPORTS: In this article we present two different case studies of young patients diagnosed with ICE syndrome with complications. The first case report is about a young woman in whom surgical treatment of glaucoma an

From Temple to Emergency Room: A Chemical Injury Case Report.

Calotropis is a small perennial plant that is native to regions with tropical climates in countries like India, where it is found throughout the country. The leaves of the Calotropis plant have been used as an offering to gods since ancient times. Accidental contact with the sap of the plant, called latex, can lead to eye injury and affect vision significantly if left untreated. However, if treated in time and appropriately, vision can be restored. A 30-year-old gentleman reported to emergency medicine with accidental contact in his right eye with Calotropis plant sap. He had complaints of blu

Efficacy and Safety of the Subtenon Injection of 0.01% Mitomycin C-augmented Trabeculectomy.

Background Trabeculectomy, with the application of mitomycin C (MMC), has been the gold standard glaucoma-filtering surgery. The conventional method of applying MMC using soaked sponges does not ensure a controlled amount of delivery of MMC, and incidences of blebitis are reported to be associated with leftover sponges. This study aims to assess the safety and efficacy of a low dose (0.1 mg/ml) of MMC administered through subtenon injection during trabeculectomy combined with cataract extraction, addressing existing research gaps. Methods It is a prospective interventional study on patients wh

Alcohol Endotheliitis: A Report of a Rare Case.

Sudden transient loss of vision after an acute bout of alcohol consumption in patients with chronic alcoholism is rare. The underlying mechanism is a transient depression of the endothelial pump due to ethanol toxicity following a large amount of alcohol consumption in chronic alcoholic patients. Here, we report a rare case of a 60-year-old male patient who came to the outpatient department with complaints of sudden loss of vision associated with redness following a large amount of alcohol consumption. The case was managed by prompt diagnosis and topical and oral corticosteroid therapy. This i

A novel approach to remove retained lens material: Suction-assisted elevation and anterior chamber phacoemulsification.

PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate the feasibility of a novel pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) technique for the removal of retained lens material (RLM), which obviates the need for either 20-gauge intravitreal fragmentation or perfluorocarbon-assisted elevation. METHODS: Interventional case series. After thorough 23-gauge PPV, the hard lens material is engaged and held adherent to the vitreous cutter using aspiration, then raised into the anterior chamber. There, a standard phacoemulsification probe, inserted through a corneal incision, is used to fragment and remove the material. RESULTS: Three

Bilateral simultaneous acute angle closure glaucoma triggered by an over-the-counter cold and influenza medication.

A woman in her mid-60s who is a high hypermetrope presented with bilateral eye pain and headache approximately 1 hour after taking a single dose of a widely available decongestant containing paracetamol, guaifenesin and phenylephrine hydrochloride for coryzal symptoms. She had previous successful bilateral peripheral iridotomies performed for narrow angles. At presentation, her intraocular pressures (IOPs) were significantly raised at 72 mm Hg and 66 mm Hg in the right and left eye, respectively, with bilateral corneal oedema. Her IOP was normalised with urgent treatment using 500 mg intraveno

A comprehensive long-term follow-up study of Brown-McLean syndrome.

PURPOSE: This report aims to document a long-term follow-up of a rare case of Brown-McLean syndrome where high-density central corneal endothelial cells (CECs) were maintained, yet the peripheral area developed corneal edema. OBSERVATIONS: A 72-year-old Japanese male was referred to our hospital. He had a history of three instances of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the right eye, requiring three intraocular surgeries. While the circumferential corneal peripheral regions, predominantly in the nasal and temporal areas, exhibited corneal edema, the central region remained clear. The centra

Single-piece Foldable Intraocular Lenses versus Three-piece Intraocular Lenses in the Sulcus following Posterior Capsular Rupture in a Philippine Tertiary Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Successful intraocular lens (IOL) placement in cataract surgery is synonymous with the IOL being placed in the capsular bag. When the capsular bag is violated, the ciliary sulcus becomes an option to approximate an in- the-bag position. Studies report that single-piece foldable acrylic (SPA) IOLs are a poor choice for the sulcus. This study aimed to report the visual outcomes and complications of sulcus placement of single-piece intraocular lenses and three-piece intraocular lenses, and compare the design and characteristics to the occurrences of complications. METHODS: The medical

Evaluation of Intraocular Pressure, Refraction, Anterior Chamber Depth, Macular Thickness, and Specular Microscopy Post-Neodymium-Doped Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet Laser in Patients With Posterior Capsular Opacification.

Background Cataract is the leading cause of blindness globally, particularly in India. Despite advancements in surgical techniques, postoperative complications remain common, with posterior capsular opacification (PCO) being the most frequent issue. Although neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy is recommended for managing PCO, it is associated with various side effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy on intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity, anterior chamber depth (ACD), macular thickness, and corneal endothelium in Indian
