Exploring the ocular involvement in multiple myeloma: a comprehensive review of 70-year clinical studies.

PURPOSE: To review the ocular symptoms and the related physiopathology in patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM) to evaluate whether the ocular manifestations can be considered a disease hallmark that can guide the clinician's decision-making. METHODS: A comprehensive review of three databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase) was conducted until April 25, 2024. Studies reporting intra- or extraocular manifestations of MM were included, excluding cases of other monoclonal gammopathies or therapy-related ocular effects. After screening 1873 initial results and hand-searching references, 82 artic

Iontophoresis impact on corneal properties using an ex vivo bovine eye model.

This study addresses the challenge of low drug bioavailability in topical ocular administration by developing and validating an ex vivo bovine eye model chamber to evaluate the effects of iontophoresis on drug delivery and corneal properties. Transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) was assessed as a predictor of corneal epithelial integrity in dissected bovine eyes. TEER measurements were correlated with methylene blue permeation, confirming a threshold of 4.2 kOhm·cm2 as an indicator of epithelial integrity. The model chamber enabled the application of drug solutions around a defined are

Preferred practice guidelines and narrative review on infectious keratitis in ocular surface diseases.

Ocular surface disease (OSD) encompasses a variety of additional factors in the natural history of infectious keratitis like disruption of the normal tear film, altered ocular microbiome, adnexal inflammation, de-epithelization of the cornea due to anatomical factors like trichiasis, lid margin keratinization, presence of limbal stem cell deficiency, and other lid related problems. These cases need special attention with respect to lower threshold for inpatient admission and care along with examination and careful corneal scraping to avoid any perforation. The preferable practice patterns in t

[Research progress on biomechanical characteristics of the posterior eye and vitreoretinal diseases and optic neuropathy].

The occurrence and development of biological tissue diseases are closely related to their biomechanical properties. In recent years, significant achievements have been made in the research on the biomechanical properties of the cornea and sclera, and the research on the association between the biomechanics of the posterior eye and eye diseases has also been continuously advanced. This review systematically collates the research on the biomechanical characteristics of the retina, Bruch's membrane-choroid complex (BMCC), and optic nerve head. The retina is anisotropic, with the elastic modulus i

Isotretinoin-related post-surgical interface alterations during sun light exposure: A case report.

IntroductionRefractive surgery, including procedures like photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), is increasingly common and generally safe, offering favorable optical outcomes. However, patients' anamnesis often lacks significant clinical information, such as systemic treatments for acne, diabetes, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Isotretinoin, a systemic treatment for severe acne, is rarely associated with corneal abnormalities.Patient and Clinical FindingsThis case report presents a 26-year-old female who underwent PRK for her myopic refractive err

Upregulations of SNAT2 and GLS-1 Are Key Osmoregulatory Responses of Human Corneal Epithelial Cells to Hyperosmotic Stress.

Dry eye syndrome (DES) affects millions of people worldwide. However, as the cellular responses of the corneal epithelium under hyperosmotic stress remain unclear, this study investigated the proteomic changes between human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) cultured with isosmotic and hyperosmotic media. Under hyperosmotic stress, HCECs increased expressions of sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporter (SNAT2), glutaminase (GLS-1), and a few isoforms of heat shock protein and aldo-keto reductase family 1. The expressions of SNAT2 and GLS-1 were increased after 6 h of exposure to hyperosmoti

Severe Corneal Ulceration After Cosmetic Keratopigmentation.

PURPOSE: Keratopigmentation is a well-described procedure often used to address corneal opacities. Purely cosmetic keratopigmentation, in the absence of underlying corneal pathology has increased in popularity recently, with the intention of changing eye color appearance. In the context of this increased popularity, public knowledge and data regarding the risks of this procedure are lacking. METHODS: This study is a case report conducted at a single academic institution. RESULTS: Here we present a case of a patient who underwent purely cosmetic keratopigmentation and who developed severe cor

Ontogeny of Eyelids in Indian Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis): A Histological Study.

The ontogeny of the eyelids involves a coordinated process of cell proliferation, changes in cell shape, migration and cell death. The function of the eyelids is to protect the eye from mechanical and optical injuries. The prenatal development of eyelids has many interesting milestones and events in various animals, as reported. But the information on histomorphogenesis of eyelids in Indian buffalo seems to be meagre. So, the study was planned to observe various microscopic milestones during the prenatal development of eyelids in Indian buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). A total of 33 embryos/foetuses

Asymmetric Presentation of Corneal Ectasia With Acute Hydrops 34 Years Following Bilateral Radial Keratotomy.

Despite the subsequent emergence of more advanced refractive surgical techniques, ophthalmologists continue to encounter patients who have experienced long-term complications from radial keratotomy (RK). A notable complication of RK is corneal ectasia, which, although rare, can lead to significant vision impairment years after the procedure. The present case report details a 54-year-old male patient who developed unilateral corneal ectasia with acute hydrops 34 years following bilateral RK. The patient exhibited symptoms including decreased vision, corneal opacity, thinning, and steepening in

Investigation of postmortem change in the human corneal epithelium via impression cytology.

The corneal epithelium, which consists of superficial, intermediate, and basal layers, demonstrates layer-by-layer shedding with the prolongation of postmortem interval (PMI). This study aimed to evaluate postmortem changes in the corneal epithelium via impression cytology. Specimens were obtained from 134 cases of postmortem CT and/or autopsy, which were divided into 6 groups by PMI (6 h-14 days). The cells collected from the corneal surface using membrane filters were double-stained with antibodies against ZO-1 (expressing on superficial cells) and occludin (expressing on either superficial
