Pellucid marginal corneal degeneration (PMCD) is an ectatic corneal disorder characterized by a peripheral, noninflammatory band of thinning of the inferior cornea. This condition often is misdiagnosed with keratoconus, with which it shares several clinical, videotopographic, and histologic aspects. Furthermore, as with keratoconus, hydrops and spontaneous corneal perforation can occur. We report the case of a 56-year-old man with confirmed PMCD, emphasizing the diagnostic approach, the disease follow-up, and its complication in spontaneous acute corneal hydrops. Finally, regarding this case,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to review the causes, risk factors, management, and future research directions for corneal ectasia after laser in situ keratomileusis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Complex corneal biomechanical processes influence the integrity of the normal and postoperative cornea, and developing an understanding of these processes facilitates recognition of risk factors for ectasia after laser in-situ keratomileusis. Currently identified risk factors include keratoconus, high myopia, low residual stromal bed thickness from excessive ablation or thick flap creation, and def

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a common complication of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and may lead to corneal epithelial defect and melting. In contrast, recurrent corneal calcareous degeneration and perforation is rare. A 46-year-old woman developed chronic GVHD after bone marrow transplantation for aplastic anemia. Severe KCS with corneal melting and calcium deposits were noted in the left eye. Penetrating keratoplasty was performed because of corneal perforation, but poor re-epithelialization and calcium deposition recurred. Lamellar keratectomy and amniotic membrane transplantatio

We present a patient with marginal corneal degeneration and corneal astigmatism of more than 10.0 diopters (D). A toric phakic intraocular lens (IOL) of 7.0 D cylindrical power was implanted in both eyes to correct the high astigmatism. An uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 was achieved in both eyes, and the best corrected visual acuity improved by 4 Snellen lines to 20/20 in both eyes. Refraction and visual acuity remained stable at 1.5 years postoperatively. Implantation of a toric phakic IOL can be an option to correct high corneal astigmatism even when the full corneal astigmatism cannot b

We report a case of Ferrara intracorneal ring (Mediphacos) implantation and cataract surgery for the correction of pellucid marginal corneal degeneration. Preoperatively, the patient's uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) was 0.05 in the right eye and 0.10 in the left eye. The best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) was 0.50 with -2.00 -11.25 x 80 in the right eye and 0.60 with -2.00 -5.50 x 95 in the left eye. One month postoperatively, the UCVA was 0.50 in the right eye and 0.30 in the left eye. The BSCVA was 0.80 with -1.00 in the right eye and 0.60 with -0.75 -1.25 x 160 in the left eye

Three years after uneventful excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy in both eyes, a 34-year-old man sustained a perforating injury in the left eye. The severe injury, followed by endophthalmitis and retinal detachment, necessitated vitrectomy, lensectomy, and an internal tamponade with silicone oil. One month after the accident and operations, disk-shaped corneal edema corresponding to the laser treatment zone appeared. The edematous region showed a circular, ring-like epithelial thickening at the borders and central corneal epithelial erosion. The anterior stroma developed a central opacit
