A rare case of aphakia associated with anterior segment malformation in a cocker spaniel puppy.

This report describes a rare case of bilateral congenital aphakia with anterior segment malformation in a 12-week-old male cocker spaniel puppy. The puppy was initially suspected of having glaucoma and was subsequently diagnosed with anterior segment dysgenesis and aphakia resulting in blindness. Ophthalmic examination showed corneal opacity, absence of pupillary openings, and negative pupillary light reflexes. B-mode and high-frequency ultrasonography showed absence of the lens, poorly defined anterior chambers, and hyperechoic tissue adherent to the cornea, consistent with anterior segment d

Non-Invasive Measurement of In Vivo Corneal Steady-State Biomechanical Properties via Controllable Negative Pressure Inflation.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the steady-state corneal biomechanical properties related to postoperative corneal ectasia, keratoconus, glaucoma and other ophthalmic diseases, we propose a novel in vivo measurement method. METHODS: By precisely manipulating ambient negative pressure via a suction device to achieve controlled in vivo corneal inflation, we analyzed the coupling relationship between corneal deformation response and negative pressure loading. The displacement corresponding to the corneal initial configuration under 0 mmHg was extrapolated. The inverse finite element analysis (FEA) techniq

Unmasking Wilson's Disease Through Severe Psychiatric Manifestations: A Case Report.

Wilson's disease is an inherited disorder of copper homeostasis with highly variable clinical expression. In some patients, psychiatric syndromes dominate the early disease course and divert diagnostic reasoning toward primary mental illness, delaying etiologic treatment. A 38-year-old woman was brought to the emergency department by police with onset of behavior change characterized by public disinhibition and intense motor agitation. Initial complete neurological assessment was limited by the presence of severe dysarthria. After initial treatment, the neurological evaluation disclosed the pr

Bilateral Eyelid Agenesis With Multiple Congenital Ocular Anomalies in an Australian Labradoodle Puppy: Case Report and Surgical Management.

A 15-week-old Australian Labradoodle puppy was presented to The University of Queensland Small Animal Hospital for bilateral eyelid agenesis/coloboma and associated ocular complications. Enucleation of the left globe and repair of the right eyelid via a lip-to-lid transmucosal flap was performed. Given the subsequent development of prolapse of the gland of the nictitating membrane and a lack of vision of the right eye, enucleation of the right globe was then performed 2 months following the initial procedure. Both globes and a skin wedge from the right eye were submitted to The University of Q

Enhanced Sensitivity of Real-Time Intraocular Pressure Monitoring by Integration of a Wrinkled Gold-Based Capacitive Sensor with Parity-Time Symmetry Wireless Technology.

Glaucoma is an ophthalmic condition characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) due to the obstruction of aqueous humor flow in the anterior chamber of the eye. This condition can damage the optic nerve, ultimately leading to blindness. Therefore, real-time monitoring of IOP is essential for preventing glaucoma and other ophthalmic diseases. A smart soft contact lens with a capacitive sensor was developed to monitor IOP. The sensor employs a wrinkled gold-film electrode that can stretch by up to 50% of its initial length without a significant change in resistance. A soft dielectric la

Heterozygous CECR2 variants support a distinct neurodevelopmental syndrome with features overlapping cat eye syndrome.

The CECR2 histone acetyl-lysine reader facilitates chromatin remodeling and plays a significant role in neurodevelopment. It resides within the cat eye syndrome (CES) critical region at 22q11.1q11.21. An increased copy number of this region, often as tetrasomy or a supernumerary chromosome, results in CES. The complex chromosomal arrangements and phenotypic variability have hampered the identification of the true cause(s) of CES. Patients and their clinical data were collected from multiple diagnostic and research laboratories. Exome or genome sequencing was performed in affected individuals a

Gelatinous drop-like amyloid in FOXC2 distichiasis syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gelatinous drop-like dystrophy is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the TACSTD2 gene and characterized by subepithelial amyloid deposits in the cornea. Alterations in FOXC2 are seen in lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome, in which patients classically exhibit lymphedema of the extremities and a double row of eyelashes. This report links alterations in the FOXC2 gene to a corneal phenotype that is histologically identical to that seen in gelatinous drop-like dystrophy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old male with congenital distichiasis presented with c

Association between ocular biometric parameters and scleral rigidity as measured by fundus pulsation optical coherence elastography in eyes with and without glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the correlation between ocular rigidity, as measured using fundus pulsation optical coherence elastography (FP-OCE), and ocular and systemic biometric parameters in patients with and without glaucoma. METHODS: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal eyes were scanned using swept-source OCT (PLEX Elite 9000, Carl Zeiss Meditec). For each scan, a 3-mm field centered at the fovea was continuously monitored for 3000 B-scans, which were then processed to extract the ratio of maximal choroidal deformation to choroidal thickness [choroidal maximal strain (CMS)]; ocular rig
