TRPA1 inhibition reduces ocular pain and corneal neurogenic inflammation in a mouse model of dry eye disease.

Dry eye disease (DED) is characterized by neurosensory abnormalities, complicating the management of ocular pain, and is further worsened by significant ocular inflammation. Although multiple inflammatory pathways contribute to DED, the role of neurogenic inflammation, particularly through transient receptor potential ankyrin-1 (TRPA1) nociceptors, which are expressed in the cornea nerve fibers, remains underexplored. This study investigates the involvement of TRPA1 in ocular pain and neurogenic inflammation in chronic DED. To explore this, multi-unit extracellular recordings were used to moni

The evaluation and management of dry anophthalmic socket syndrome.

Dry anophthalmic socket syndrome (DASS) is a complex and multifaceted condition that commonly affects patients who have undergone enucleation or evisceration and wear an ocular prothesis. The diagnosis and management of DASS poses significant challenges due to the absence of a standardized diagnostic criteria and evidence-based treatment protocol. Though DASS symptoms can be disproportionate to observable clinical signs, patient-reported outcomes and scoring systems remain the cornerstone of its diagnostic framework. While a dearth of literature exists, parallels can be drawn from other ocular

Descemet's Membrane Detachment Following Minor Blunt Periocular Trauma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) is usually encountered postoperatively, with most cases not resolving spontaneously and requiring medical or surgical intervention. We describe a case that developed DMD immediately following blunt trauma in an aphakic eye with significant iridodonesis. The case was managed with an injection of gas tamponade that was later augmented. Eventually, the patient regained near-baseline visual acuity. DMD can occur immediately following blunt trauma with no associated endothelial abnormalities, recent intraocular surgery, keratoconus, or inflammation. Significant

Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma Involving the Orbit: A Case Report.

This report describes a case of an intraorbital basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) that led to blindness in the affected eye and to severe deformation of the orbit. The patient, a 63-year-old man, presented with a two-month history of left periorbital pain and progressive vision loss in his left eye. His ocular history was pertinent for trauma to his left upper eyelid 10 years prior to presentation, resulting in a scar. He noted that the orbital tumor started with ulceration in the area of the scar two years prior to his presentation to our clinic. The patient had a history of a 40-pound

Comprehensive lipid analysis of human meibum and tears.

Abnormalities in the tear film lipid layer, which plays a critical role in preventing water evaporation and protecting the corneal surface, lead to dry eye disease. The lipids in this layer include both meibum lipids (from the meibomian glands) and phospholipids of other origins. Meibum lipids include cholesteryl esters, wax monoesters, wax diesters (WdiEs), (O-acyl)-ω-hydroxy fatty acids (OAHFAs), and cholesteryl OAHFAs. Nonetheless, the exact composition of these lipid classes remains largely unclear. Here, we analyze the composition of cholesteryl esters, wax monoesters, WdiEs, OAHFAs, chol

Do eye trackers estimate eyeball rotation? The relationship between tracked eye image feature and estimated saccadic waveform.

The eyeball is not rigid and deforms during saccades. As a consequence, the saccade waveform recorded by an eye tracker may depend on which structure of the eye is used to estimate eyeball rotation. Here, we systematically describe and compare signals co-recorded from the retina, the cornea (corneal reflection, CR), the pupil, and the lens (fourth Purkinje reflection, P4) during saccades. We found that several commonly used parameters for saccade characterization differ systematically across the signals. For instance, saccades in the retinal signal had earlier onsets compared to saccades in th

Outcomes of a Novel Positioning Technique for Ophthalmic Surgery in Patients With Atypical Anatomy.

In cataract extraction surgery, patient positioning and surgeon comfort are necessary for success. The patient's head must be flat and parallel to the floor to minimize complications and permit the use of a standard ophthalmic microscope. This position is often difficult in patients with spinal abnormalities, such as age-related hyperkyphosis or the exaggeration of the thoracic spine curvature. Multiple methods have been proposed to improve positioning in patients with spinal abnormalities. While these positions benefit the patient, they are often uncomfortable for the surgeon due to a lack of

Eyelid Malpositions and Ocular Surface Disease: Clinical Correlations and Management Strategies.

Eyelid retraction, cicatricial entropion, and deformities associated with facial nerve palsy are among the eyelid malpositions most detrimental to the ocular surface, as they cause exposure, tear film instability, inflammation, and potentially significant visual impairment. These conditions present major functional and esthetic challenges, underscoring the need for a clear understanding of their mechanisms and management. A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and Google Scholar to identify English and non-English studies (with English abstracts) addressing eyelid malp

[Comparative evaluation of tonometry methods in keratoconus].

UNLABELLED: The chronic course of keratoconus (KC) and the associated structural and functional changes in the cornea complicate the interpretation of intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements. A promising approach is to analyze tonometric data with consideration of the variability of corneal biomechanical (viscoelastic) properties and thickness rather than disease stage. This is supported by clinical observations showing a wide variation in IOP values even within the same stage of KC. PURPOSE: This study aimed to comparatively evaluate tonometric readings obtained by different devices in KC ba

Iridal melanoma in the right eye of a dog: A rare case from Chonburi, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: In dogs, intraocular tumors are uncommon and often present with nonspecific clinical signs such as vision loss, corneal opacity, or hyphema. Melanocytic tumors of the iris are rare among these, with limited documentation in Thailand. Accurate diagnosis requires ophthalmic examination, imaging, and histopathology, whereas treatment strategies depend on tumor location and progression. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 16-year-old neutered male Shih Tzu presented with progressive blindness and a history of bumping into objects. Ophthalmic examination revealed blood-tinged discharge, elevated intra

Systemic Conditions Associated With Blepharitis: A Case-Control Study.

PURPOSE: Blepharitis is a prevalent ocular condition, associated with significant discomfort and linked to other ocular and systemic pathologies such as dermatological conditions. The pathophysiology of blepharitis is multifactorial, and the potential correlation with systemic conditions including blood test abnormalities is still not fully known. We aimed to identify systemic conditions and routine laboratory abnormalities independently associated with blepharitis in a large screening-clinic cohort. METHODS: This case-control study analyzed electronic medical records from adults who underwen

The Prevalence of Corneal Disorders in Pugs Attending Primary Care Veterinary Practices in Australia.

Pugs are highly predisposed to corneal disorders, such as brachycephalic ocular syndrome (BOS), due to their disproportionate skull, reduced corneal sensitivity and eyelid anomalies such as distichiasis, entropion and lagophthalmos. The risk of corneal disorders which cause significant suffering is substantial, prompting calls for international efforts to reduce their prevalence. While these debilitating conditions are also likely to be common in pugs in Australia, their prevalence and risk factors have not been reported. The anonymised electronic patient records (EPRs) of 1318 pugs attending

Presumed Autoimmune Keratitis in Both Eyes Without Systemic Manifestations: A 40-Year Course of a Patient With Corneal Infiltrates and Melt.

Peripheral corneal infiltration, corneal ulcer, and melt are recognized complications linked to systemic immunological diseases, such as antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis. These manifestations, which occur in isolation, might be autoimmune keratitis but are difficult to prove underlying immunological abnormalities. This report described a patient with presumed autoimmune keratitis who repeatedly presented corneal infiltration and perforation in both eyes even after penetrating keratoplasty. The 68-year-old patient with a stable condition of keratoconjunctivitis s
