Patterns of Social Engagement and Associations with Depression, Loneliness and Stigma in People Living with HIV.

People living with HIV (PWH), more than half of whom are age 50 years and older, experience a high prevalence of multiple chronic conditions (MCC) and fragile social networks. Although social engagement can be protective against detrimental physical, cognitive, and mental health outcomes, there is limited evidence about older PWH's social engagement and associated factors in engaging with family, friends and the community. This study examined the state of social engagement in a population of older PWH, using the 13-item Frequency of Leisure Activities Scale from the Research on Older Adults wi

Place Security and Mental Health: Two Sides of the Same Coin Among Young Adults with Perinatally-Acquired HIV and Exposure in New York City.

Stable housing and perceived safety in one's residential neighborhood (place security) may be critical to health and mental health outcomes in populations affected by HIV. This paper examines how perceived neighborhood disorder and houselessness affect the mental health of young adults with perinatally-acquired HIV infection (YAPHIV) or perinatal HIV exposure without infection (YAPHEU) in a New York City-based longitudinal cohort study. Participants were recruited between 2003 and 2008 when participants were between the ages of 9 and 16 and followed into young adulthood. Data for this paper wa

Engaging Mentor Mothers in Rapid Return of Viral Load Results to Pregnant and Postpartum Women Living with HIV: An Implementation Pilot Study.

In Kenya, the primary driver of perinatal HIV transmission is disengagement from care. Virologic monitoring can reinforce adherence and enable timely intervention, yet results are often delayed. Among pregnant (≥ 27 weeks) and postpartum (≤ 6 months) women in HIV care in Kisumu Kenya, we conducted a pilot study in which Mentor Mothers (peer support) returned viral load results (GeneXpert) after a clinic visit between June-December 2023. We assessed feasibility, acceptability, and factors associated with time from sample collection to results to participants via generalized estimating equations

Patterns and Predictors of HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Continuity Among Young Women Who Sell Sex in Uganda: A Group-Based Trajectory Modeling Approach.

Young women who sell sex (YWSS) in Africa are particularly vulnerable to HIV acquisition and may benefit from daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) but face multiple barriers to uptake. We identified temporal patterns of PrEP continuity/retention and associated characteristics within a cohort of YWSS in Uganda. Cisgender women aged 18-24 years who exchanged sex for money, goods, or services were recruited into a PrEP demonstration study in peri-urban Mukono District. We used group-based trajectory modeling to discern temporal patterns of PrEP continuity over 12 months of follow-up and mul

Improving Gender and Sexuality Inclusivity of a Long-Running HIV Behavioural Surveillance Survey to Identify New Sexual Practices, HIV Risks, and Maintain Community Support: A Mixed Methods Study.

Inclusive language in data collection is essential for effective and sustained engagement with marginalised populations. The historic use of imprecise conceptualisations of gender and sexuality in the field of HIV and sexual health research has been challenged in the last decade, particularly cisnormative and monosexist assumptions about identity and practice. This study reports on the process of redesigning a repeated cross-sectional survey questionnaire in Australia to improve gender and sexuality inclusivity. The Gay Community Periodic Surveys (GCPS), repeated since 1996, was redesigned in

Increased Pro-inflammatory Biomarkers and Cardiovascular Risk in Young Adults Living With Perinatal HIV in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: We assessed levels of pro-inflammatory biomarkers as possible surrogate markers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in Thai young adults with perinatally acquired HIV infection (YA-PHIV). METHODS: Serum samples and baseline data from YA-PHIV enrolled in a prospective cohort study from November 2020 to July 2021 at five tertiary care hospitals in Thailand were analyzed. We measured high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), soluble CD163 (sCD163), and interleukin (IL)-18 levels. Data were analyzed using nonparametric methods. RESULTS: Among 347 YA-PHIV, 54% were female, the me

Recent HIV-1 infection and pre-treatment HIV drug resistance among adults initiating antiretroviral therapy in rural Tanzania.

BackgroundNew HIV-1 infections continue to pose a major challenge to ending the HIV epidemic and may facilitate the transmission of drug-resistant strains. In this study, we aimed to determine the proportion of recent HIV-1 infections (RHI) among individuals initiating HIV care at a rural referral hospital in Tanzania and to assess the prevalence of pre-treatment HIV-1 drug resistance (PDR) and circulating subtypes among those with RHI.MethodsIn this cross-sectional analysis, RHI was identified using the Asante HIV-1 rapid recency assay on bio-banked samples from newly diagnosed adult people l

Single-cell characterization of the gastrointestinal HIV reservoir reveals heterogeneous cellular phenotypes.

Human gastrointestinal (GI) tissues are a major site of HIV-1 viral persistence, but the nature of the GI reservoir remains poorly described. To characterize the GI HIV reservoir, we profiled cells from GI tissue and matched PBMCs from 10 people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy using single-cell RNA sequencing. We identified distinct compartment-specific patterns of gene expression, highlighting key differences between blood and colon CD4+ T cell populations. vRNA+ cells from both blood and GI tissue were heterogeneous and found in multiple subtypes of CD4+ T cells, although vRNA+ cells were

Transforming the sexual health landscape through PrEP: a qualitative content analysis of experiences among MSM in Sweden.

Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective and safe way to prevent HIV acquisition among men who have sex with men (MSM). PrEP became available to MSM in Sweden in 2018, but there have been challenges in its accessibility. The aim of this study was to gain an improved understanding of the lived experience of MSM enrolled in a PrEP program in Sweden. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 16 MSM enrolled in the Uppsala PrEP program, which was the first PrEP program in Sweden. After being transcribed verbatim, data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis wi

A cohort study of growth differentiating factor - 15 (GDF-15) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) as biomarkers of healthy aging in older adults living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: The median age of Canadians living with HIV will exceed 65 years in the next decade. Compared to HIV-negative counterparts, people living with HIV exhibit elevated serum levels of inflammatory markers. In the general population, increased levels of some markers are linked to comorbidity, frailty, cognitive decline, and mortality. To date there are no HIV-specific biomarkers to measure and monitor healthy aging or to serve as endpoints in the evaluation of relevant interventions. This study aimed to evaluate inflammatory markers as indicators of healthy aging in older people living

Becoming one with the community: a grounded theory-derived context-specific framework exploring AIDS service organization strategies for implementing pre-exposure prophylaxis outreach among African American populations.

BACKGROUND: Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective HIV prevention approach, uptake remains low among African American individuals within the United States (US). AIDS service organizations (ASOs) may foster effective PrEP outreach among this underserved population. However, strategies for engaging priority African American groups are limited. This study developed a context-specific framework for tailoring ASO-based PrEP outreach for African American high priority groups for HIV. METHODS: This study utilized constructivist grounded theory (CGT) rooted in symbolic interact

Balancing solidarity, normality and trust: reasons for (non-)participation in an injectable HIV antiretroviral therapy study in the United Kingdom.

Many new drug trials fail to recruit participants that are representative of the populations they are intended to serve, resulting in research gaps which contribute to health inequalities. In the United Kingdom, reasons for non-participation in HIV drug trials remain poorly understood. Accordingly, we present a thematic analysis of interview and survey data gathering the perspectives of individuals who chose to participate and those who chose not to participate in the ILANA study – an implementation study of the first ever long-acting injectable HIV treatment, cabotegravir and rilpivirine. PrEP public policies for HIV prevention in South America: an intersectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective biomedical prevention strategy, recommended by the World Health Organization since 2015. However, in South America, its adoption has been uneven, reflecting structural, political, and socio-cultural inequalities. This study maps and analyzes national PrEP policies across 13 South American countries through an intersectional lens, identifying challenges and opportunities for more equitable HIV prevention strategies. METHODS: We conducted a documentary survey of national PrEP-related policies, clinical guidelines, regulations

HPV vaccination hesitancy and acceptance among parents in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany: the role of gender, awareness and fear.

BACKGROUND: Despite national recommendations in Germany for universal HPV vaccination, uptake remains suboptimal—particularly among boys. Parental awareness, gender dynamics, and hesitancy play key roles in vaccination decisions. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 406 parents of children aged 9–14 years in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt. An anonymized online questionnaire assessed HPV-associated awareness, attitudes, willingness to vaccinate, and conditions under which hesitant parents might reconsider. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests and logistic regression. Parent

Enhancing functional antibody responses against HIV envelope V1V2 through vaccine formulations.

BACKGROUND: Despite decades of research, the development of an effective HIV vaccine remains a significant challenge. Recent findings from three large vaccine efficacy trials have identified antibodies against the V1V2 domain of the HIV envelope glycoprotein as a potential correlate of reduced infection risk, offering a promising avenue for improving vaccine efficacy. Vaccine-elicited anti-V1V2 antibodies do not mediate potent virus-neutralizing activities, but they mediate Fc-dependent effector functions. METHODS: This study evaluated the capacity of V1V2-scaffold vaccines in different formu
