Demographic and clinical factors associated with Syphilis treatment initiation in a tribal health system: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals are disproportionately burdened by syphilis compared with other racial and ethnic groups. Early syphilis treatment is important to reduce transmission and prevent negative health outcomes. Understanding the characteristics of individuals who test positive and the factors associated with initiating treatment will support syphilis prevention and treatment efforts. METHODS: Cherokee Nation conducted a retrospective cohort study of individuals who tested positive for syphilis between 2016 and 2023. Data were collected from electronic h

Australian Gonococcal Surveillance Programme Annual Report, 2025.

The Australian Gonococcal Surveillance Programme (AGSP) has continuously monitored antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) for more than 45 years through the system of jurisdictional Neisseria reference laboratories, the National Neisseria Network (NNN). In 2025, a total of 10,204 isolates across Australia, from public and private sectors, were tested for in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility by standardised methods. In 2025, the AGSP captured antimicrobial susceptibility data for 23.9% of all gonococcal infection notifications nationally. The current treatment recommendation fo

Congenital syphilis as a failure of the maternal-fetal prevention cascade: Clinical implications for pregnant migrant and structurally vulnerable women in high-income settings - an ESCMID study group for infections in Travellers and migrants (ESGITM) perspective.

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis remains a preventable but persistent cause of fetal loss, neonatal morbidity, and early-life complications. In high-income settings, its occurrence rarely reflects the absence of diagnostic tools or effective therapy; but more often exposes missed opportunities across antenatal care, sexually transmitted infection prevention, maternal treatment, partner management, and neonatal follow-up. This review investigates congenital syphilis from the viewpoint of the possible failures of the maternal-fetal prevention pathway, with a specific focus on pregnant migrant and

Role of cervicovaginal microbiome and metabolome in ALA-PDT-mediated HPV clearance in patients with cervical HSIL.

The cervicovaginal microbiome and its associated metabolites play a pivotal role in the persistence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Here, we investigated the contribution of the cervicovaginal microbiome and metabolome to 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT)-mediated HPV clearance in patients with cervical high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing analysis identified significant differences in cervicovaginal microbiota before ALA-PDT between the HPV clearance and non-clearance groups. The HPV non-clearance group exhibited higher a

Prevalence of SARS-COV-2 infection, Relationship between SARS-CoV-2 and HIV among Sex Workers in Cotonou.

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, few studies have been carried out on the prevalence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome of the coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), particularly in groups of patients with comorbidity factors. Moreover, the question of whether HIV increases the risk of contracting SARS-COV-2 or its severity has been the subject of some research. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of SARS-COV-2 and estabilish the relationship between HIV infection and SARS-CoV-2 infection in female sex workers. METHODOLOGY: Descriptive cross-sectional study of female se

Effect of the BATHE Technique on Quality of Life in Adults with HIV/AIDS in Northern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in HIV/AIDS treatment have transformed the condition into a manageable chronic disease with improved life expectancy. However, increased survival does not always guarantee better quality of life (QoL). Psychosocial interventions, such as the BATHE technique, offer a structured approach to addressing emotional and social challenges in routine care. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the BATHE technique on the QoL of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH), an area with limited empirical evidence, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: This single-blinded random

Sex Disparities in Cardiovascular Risk Factors among People Living with HIV Attending a Clinic in North-western Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: HIV infection is linked with increased risk of cardiovascular disease through a complex interplay of factors involving traditional risk factors, antiretroviral drug use and effects related to the immunologic aftermath of HIV infection. Men and women have similar risk factors for cardiovascular disease, but many social behaviours impact health differently by sex. OBJECTIVES: This study set out to examine sex disparities in both traditional and behavioural cardiovascular risk factors among people living with HIV (PLWH) attending a clinic in Kano, North-western Nigeria. METHODOLOGY:

Selective persistence of HIV-1-infected T cell clones can occur through immune reprogramming driven by defective, transcriptionally active proviruses.

People living with HIV (PLWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) accumulate primarily defective proviral sequences in genomes of often clonally expanded CD4 + HIV-1 target cells. The majority of viral-derived DNA is transcriptionally active and preferentially found at distinct genomic loci suggesting a selective process driven by integration site-specific crosstalk between viral and host sequences. Focusing on one of the most prominent selected integration loci, the BTB Domain and CNC Homolog 2 (BACH2) gene, we here show mechanistic insights how CD4 + T cells are functionally reprogrammed via exa

Adult-Onset Still Disease Triggered by Recent Cytomegalovirus Infection: A Diagnosis of Exclusion and a Review of the Literature.

Adult-onset Still disease (AOSD) is a rare systemic autoinflammatory disorder characterized by quotidian fever, inflammatory arthritis, evanescent rash, neutrophilic leukocytosis, and hyperferritinemia. Because no pathognomonic diagnostic test exists, diagnosis relies on characteristic clinical features and exclusion of infectious, malignant, and autoimmune disorders. Viral infections, including cytomegalovirus (CMV), have been proposed as potential immunologic triggers in genetically susceptible individuals, although causality remains unproven. We report a 47-year-old Hispanic woman with hype

Combined Effects of Chlamydia pneumoniae Infection and Hypoxia on Glial Metabolism and Alzheimer's Disease-Related Pathways.

Alzheimer's disease involves complex interactions among neuroinflammation and metabolic dysfunction. Emerging evidence implicates microbial pathogens and hypoxia as converging stressors, yet their combined impact on glial function remains poorly understood. Human astrocyte and microglial cell lines were exposed to four experimental conditions: (i) normoxic control, (ii) Chlamydia pneumoniae infection under normoxia, (iii) hypoxia control and (iv) Chlamydia pneumoniae infection under hypoxic conditions. Hypoxia was induced at 3% oxygen for 72 h. Cellular responses were assessed using NanoString

Latent HIV Infection of BBB Pericytes Enhances Gap Junction-mediated Crosstalk with Endothelial Cells.

HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Impairments persist, with over 50% of patients experiencing cognitive decline. Blood-brain barrier (BBB) impairment is a consistent feature of this comorbidity, which is remarkable, because BBB endothelial cells are not productively infected by HIV-1. Conversely, pericytes can be productively infected with HIV-1 and are essential for cerebrovascular homeostasis. Given this, we hypothesized that HIV-1 infection of pericytes disrupts BBB endothelial cell integrity through dysfunctional gap junction and hemichannel signaling, impairing pericyte-endothelial intercellu

Self-reported prevalence of tuberculosis and selected associated vulnerability factors among rural populations in six districts of India: A community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a major public health challenge in India, contributing to one-fourth of global burden of TB disease. Comorbidities in uninfected individuals make them vulnerable to TB disease. This study estimates the self-reported prevalence of tuberculosis and selected vulnerability factors (HIV, current smoking, silicosis, occupational silica-dust exposure, diabetes mellitus and persistent cough >2 weeks) among the rural demography of six districts in India, with the aim of informing targeted active case finding under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP). Optimal Two-Phase Sampling Designs for Generalized Raking Estimators With Multiple Parameters of Interest.

Large observational datasets, including those derived from electronic health records, are a valuable resource for medical research but are often affected by missingness, measurement error, and misclassification. Two-phase sampling with generalized raking (GR) estimation is an efficient and robust approach to statistical inference in such settings. In this approach, variables that are unavailable or measured with error in a large Phase 1 cohort are obtained with higher-quality measurements in a Phase 2 subsample. Previous research has studied optimal Phase 2 sampling designs for inverse-probabi

Board game-based education for HIV prevention among rural older adults: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Population aging has increased the burden of HIV infection among older adults, particularly in rural areas where access to effective health education remains limited. Traditional educational approaches often fail to engage this population. Board game-based health education has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance learning engagement and knowledge retention. METHOD: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 100 rural older adults in Hunan Province, China. Participants were allocated to either an intervention group (n = 50) receiving a board game-based HIV educati

Comparative serum cytokine and chemokine profiles across tuberculosis, latent TB, HIV, and COVID-19 infections in Namibian adults.

BACKGROUND: The devastating pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) highlighted the importance of early detection and global collaboration in combating infectious diseases. Namibia is one of the countries that bears a high burden of tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The overlap of these diseases underscores the need to better understand host immune responses, which play a critical role in disease pathogenesis and may differ across infections. This study aimed to profile selected cytokines and chemokines among Namibian individuals with TB, latent TB inf
