Resurgence of Sexually Transmitted Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With HIV.

In 2023-2025, HCV transmission in men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in Hong Kong resurged. This study aims to assess the epidemiologic patterns between 2011 and 2025. Among 288 MSM with sexually acquired HCV infection, 73% were diagnosed at least 12 months after HIV diagnosis, and 98% had ever achieved HIV viral load suppression. Comparing with Period 1 (2015-2022) featuring a large HCV genotype 3a cluster (89 diagnoses) and a few smaller HCV genotype 1a clusters (size of 2 to 13), Period 2 (2023-2025) was dominated by two HCV genotype 1a clusters (7 and 16 new diagnoses). Transm

Central Nervous System Reservoirs and HIV Cure: Therapeutic Opportunities and Challenges.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite viral suppression with antiretroviral therapy, people with HIV (PWH) remain at increased risk of neurocognitive impairment, neuroinflammation, and potential viral rebound following therapy interruption. Although the central nervous system (CNS) is a recognised HIV reservoir, it is often not fully considered in cure approaches. RECENT FINDINGS: HIV DNA and ongoing viral transcription persist in the CNS of ART-suppressed PWH, potentially contributing to neuroinflammation and neurocognitive dysfunction. HIV cure strategies, including latency-reversing/promoting agents,

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in primary health care: A qualitative study of users' therapeutic itineraries in the Brazilian Amazon.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV is available free of charge through the Brazilian Unified Health System, yet little is known about users' experiences in primary health care in the Brazilian Amazon. This study describes and analyzes the therapeutic itineraries (TI) of PrEP users attending a Family Health Unit (FHU) in Manaus, Amazonas. METHODS: This is a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study based on in-depth interviews conducted between July and September 2023. Twenty HIV-negative adults (cisgender men and women, and one transgender man) using PrEP at FHU were in

Predictors of tuberculosis preventive therapy initiation among people living with HIV in the Volta region, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV (PLHIV) despite the availability of effective preventive interventions. Tuberculosis Preventive Therapy (TPT), strongly recommended by the World Health Organization, substantially reduces the risk of active TB among PLHIV, however, uptake of TPT remains suboptimal in many settings. This study, therefore, assessed the predictors of TPT initiation, beginning the course of anti-TB medications among PLHIV. METHODS: This was a health facility-based analytical cross-sectional study among 80

Prevention norms across socio-ecological levels and their relationship to PrEP-intention among men who have sex with men: a structural equation model.

BACKGROUND: Social norms around PrEP act as both barriers to and stimulants of the use of PrEP across a wide range of target populations, yet remain relatively understudied. To stimulate theoretical innovation and provide a quantitative check for qualitative findings, we integrate norm types from the Behavioral Models (BM) and the Social Norms Approach (SNA) into the socio-ecological model (SEM) and analyze their relationship with PrEP-intention. We include attitude and role belief at the individual level, injunctive norms at the interpersonal level and descriptive norms and self-comparison to

The impact of COVID-19 on all-cause mortality and life expectancy: findings from a population-based cohort in uMkhanyakude district, northern KwaZulu-natal.

BACKGROUND: Despite the comprehensive death reporting system in South Africa, significant gaps persist in our understanding of the pandemic's impact in rural areas. METHODS: We computed monthly death counts stratified by demographic factors from a population-based demographic surveillance cohort in rural KwaZulu-Natal. We fit seasonally adjusted negative binomial regression models to estimate excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic period (5 March 2020 to 31 December 2021) compared to the pre-pandemic period (1 January 2015 to 4 March 2020). We then assessed the relative risk of death b

[Clinical and morphological characteristics and prognostic significance of the immune microenvironment and the level of PD-L1 expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and oropharynx].

Squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and oropharynx is characterized by significant clinical and biological heterogeneity, highlighting the need for reliable prognostic and predictive biomarkers. This review analyzes current evidence regarding the significance of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and immune microenvironment characteristics in these malignancies. PD-L1 has been shown to play a central role in tumor immune evasion; however, its prognostic value remains controversial and appears to depend on human papillomavirus (HPV) status, tumor immune contexture, and methodologica

Mpox and sexually transmitted infections: syndemic drivers of transmission and disease outcomes-A Narrative Review.

The worldwide outbreak of mpox (formerly monkeypox) in 2022 emerged as a public health emergency posing greater threat to persons with sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This outbreak featured an increase in overlap between mpox and STIs reflecting evolving transmission dynamics in sexual networks. Epidemiological data reveal that STIs such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Chlamydia trachomatis, herpes simplex virus, syphilis have been frequently associated with mpox infection highlighting the role of sexual contact in its transmission. A narrative review was conducted using PubMed

From HPV infection to cervical precancer: Molecular mechanisms, immune microenvironment and emerging technologies.

Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women globally, with persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as the primary etiological factor. Cervical precancerous lesions, including high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and adenocarcinoma in situ, represent the critical window for intervention prior to invasive cancer development. However, additional factors such as immunosuppression, smoking, and microbiome composition also play crucial roles in the development of cervical precancerous lesions. While HPV vaccination, screening, and treatmen

Epidemiology of Syphilis, Diagnosis, Differential Diagnosis and Treatment: Up-to-Date Knowledge.

Syphilis is an infectious sexually transmitted disease that has re-emerged as a major global public health concern, with a steadily increasing incidence in many regions of the world. It is primarily spread through sexual contact, but can also be transmitted from mother to foetus during pregnancy and, rarely, through blood transfusion. It is estimated that millions of people are affected by syphilis globally, although the exact number of infectious individuals varies by region and is difficult to determine precisely. Despite advances in diagnostic methods and the availability of effective antib

Evaluation of HPV E6/E7 mRNA in predicting recurrence after Leep in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: A study of negative findings.

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is a precursor to cervical cancer, and early detection of residual or recurrent disease is therefore critical for effective management. This study evaluated whether HPV E6/E7 mRNA status predicts recurrence in patients with CIN who underwent loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP). People's Hospital of Nanning between January 2019 and July 2022 were included. Patients who underwent LEEP for high-grade cervical lesions at the First Follow-up commenced 4-6 months after LEEP and continued for 24 months; abnormal findings during this period prompted

Beyond HPV16/18: genotype distribution of high-risk HPV and cycle threshold values in cervical carcinogenesis spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is a virus-dependent gynaecologic malignancy and according to GLOBOCAN 2022 cervical cancer is the fourth frequent women cancer in all over the world. Despite this frequency it is rarely seen in developed countries because of the enforcement of cervical screening programmes with human papillomavirus (HPV) test and Pap test called cotest. The burden of this women cancer is high despite the implementation of HPV-based vaccines and screening strategies, could nearly eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem. Heterologous Antigen Regimen and Bicistronic DNA Vaccination Targeting HPV16 E5 and E7 Oncoproteins: Immunoinformatics and Preclinical Antitumor Efficacy.

Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus, particularly HPV16, is a major cause of cervical cancer and orogenital malignancies. Therapeutic DNA vaccines targeting viral oncoproteins represent a promising strategy to induce antitumor immune responses. However, the impact of antigen combinations in bicistronic vectors and the immunization sequence on therapeutic efficacy remains poorly understood. Thus, this study aimed to characterize in silico previously described E5CP and E7CP vaccines, develop a new bicistronic construct, and evaluate its antitumor efficacy under different imm
