Epidemiological Study and Seropositivity in Viral Panel Testing Among Corneal Tissue Donors.

BACKGROUND: Corneal tissue is a critical component for vision restoration through transplantation, yet the availability of suitable corneal tissue is limited. This limitation results in long waiting lists and high demand, especially in countries with lower donation rates compared to global benchmarks. In Mexico, the corneal donation rate remains significantly behind other Latin American countries and leading nations such as Spain. Understanding the characteristics of corneal tissue donors is essential for improving donation practices and addressing the shortage of available tissues. MATERIALS

Comparing corneal biomechanics and intraocular pressure between healthy individuals and glaucoma subtypes: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The utilization of corneal biomechanical features in evaluating glaucoma and its progression has received particular attention. The severity of corneal biomechanical changes can play an essential role in response to medical or surgical treatment. The present study evaluated the biomechanical features of the cornea in glaucoma patients in different subtypes and compared them with the normal condition. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, glaucoma patients and healthy individuals were referred to the tertiary hospital in 2021. Both eyes underwent a complete ophthalmologic examina

[The revised newest IC³D classification of corneal dystrophies].

PURPOSE: This report suggests how corneal dystrophies (CDs) should be diagnosed at the slit lamp and specifies the new IC(3)D classification of CDs in 2015 which incorporates new information. METHODS: IC(3)D reviewed all peer-reviewed articles on CDs 2008 to 6/2014. Corneal dystrophy templates and anatomic classifications were updated. RESULTS: To detect landmarks for correct classification of CDs, opacity patterns and opacity units are determined at the slit lamp. Opacity patterns are described as (1) horizontal extension, (2) vertical extension ("depth") and clarity of the (3) cornea in be

Distribution of Young's modulus in porcine corneas after riboflavin/UVA-induced collagen cross-linking as measured by atomic force microscopy.

Riboflavin/UVA-induced corneal collagen cross-linking has become an effective clinical application to treat keratoconus and other ectatic disorders of the cornea. Its beneficial effects are attributed to a marked stiffening of the unphysiologically weak stroma. Previous studies located the stiffening effect predominantly within the anterior cornea. In this study, we present an atomic force microscopy-derived analysis of the depth-dependent distribution of the Young's modulus with a depth resolution of 5 µm in 8 cross-linked porcine corneas and 8 contralateral controls. Sagittal cryosections we

CCBE1 is essential for mammalian lymphatic vascular development and enhances the lymphangiogenic effect of vascular endothelial growth factor-C in vivo.

RATIONALE: Collagen- and calcium-binding EGF domains 1 (CCBE1) has been associated with Hennekam syndrome, in which patients have lymphedema, lymphangiectasias, and other cardiovascular anomalies. Insight into the molecular role of CCBE1 is completely lacking, and mouse models for the disease do not exist. OBJECTIVE: CCBE1 deficient mice were generated to understand the function of CCBE1 in cardiovascular development, and CCBE1 recombinant protein was used in both in vivo and in vitro settings to gain insight into the molecular function of CCBE1. METHODS AND RESULTS: Phenotypic analysis of m
