Lyme Carditis Beyond Atrioventricular Block: Cardiac Arrest and Transient Atrial Fibrillation With Preserved Atrioventricular Conduction.

Lyme disease may involve the heart during early dissemination and most commonly produces atrioventricular (AV) conduction abnormalities. PR interval prolongation, therefore, frequently guides clinical suspicion and management. We describe a previously healthy man who presented with seizure-like activity, aborted cardiac arrest, transient atrial fibrillation, and cardiac magnetic resonance findings consistent with acute myocarditis, although AV conduction remained normal. Serologic testing subsequently confirmed Lyme carditis. The patient recovered completely with oral doxycycline. This case il

Persistent Borrelia burgdorferi protein antigen in CD16 + monocytes is associated with monocyte-skewed immune dysregulation in post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS).

UNLABELLED: Post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS) is characterized by persistent symptoms after antibiotic therapy for Borrelia burgdorferi infection. The mechanisms underlying these symptoms remain incompletely understood and have been attributed to ongoing low-level infection, autoimmunity, or immune dysregulation driven by residual bacterial antigens. We investigated whether Borrelia burgdorferi protein antigen persists in long-lived monocyte subsets in PTLDS patients and is associated with broader immune dysregulation. CD14 ⁺ CD16 ⁺ monocytes from 10 patients with PTLDS were analyze

Isolated granulomatous pulmonary artery vasculitis associated with Hughes-Stovin syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hughes-Stovin syndrome (HSS) is an exceptionally rare vasculitis, characterized by pulmonary artery aneurysms with in situ thrombosis and is increasingly regarded as part of the vascular Behcet spectrum. Diagnosis remains challenging due to its rarity, lack of validated diagnostic criteria, and overlap with other vasculitis. CASE SUMMARY: We describe a 71-year-old male who presented with progressive dyspnoea and chest pain. Serial imaging demonstrated rapid enlargement of a main pulmonary artery aneurysm from 5 mm to 68 × 55 mm over 18 months, prompting surgical repair. Histopatho

Associations Between Maternal Mental Health and Congenital Syphilis Birth Outcomes: Analysis of Georgia Surveillance Data, 2018-2023.

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis (CS) is a preventable yet persistent public health problem in the United States. Maternal mental health conditions (MMHC) during pregnancy may contribute to missed prevention opportunities, but their association with CS outcomes is unclear. METHODS: Georgia sexually transmitted infections (STI) surveillance data (2018-2023) were analyzed to assess prebirth MMHC mentions among syphilis-affected pregnancies, their association with CS, and variation by maternal household composition as a proxy for immediate social support. MMHC mentions were identified using rule-

Capture sequencing enables enhanced genome recovery of Borrelia burgdorferi in mice.

The Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, maintains a low burden during vertebrate infection. This limitation has historically proven to be particularly challenging for genome-based studies of B. burgdorferi infection and spirochete presence after antibiotic treatment. Here, we used TBDCapSeq, an oligo capture-based next- generation sequencing assay, to demonstrate its utility for genome recovery of B. burgdorferi directly from C3H- and BALB/c-infected mice. Tissue fragments from the ear, heart, tarsus, and infection-site skin were collected at 3 and 6 months post-tick infection from

[Risk factors for pulmonary hemorrhage and severe infection in leptospirosis patients and construction of a prediction model].

Objective: To investigate the risk factors for pulmonary hemorrhage and severe infection in adult leptospirosis patients and to construct a prediction model. Method: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with leptospirosis admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University from August 2017 to September 2025. Patients were divided into a non-pulmonary hemorrhage group (n=95) and a pulmonary hemorrhage group (n=63) based on the presence or absence of pulmonary hemorrhage. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the risk factors for pulmonary h

Borrelia miyamotoi exceeds Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in human exposure despite the opposite in ticks: an integrated serological, entomological and molecular study in southeastern Kazakhstan.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) and hard tick-borne relapsing fever caused by Borrelia miyamotoi are emerging tick-borne infections, yet in Kazakhstan routine LB diagnosis relies on single-tier enzyme immunoassay (EIA) without confirmatory testing, and B. miyamotoi is absent from national diagnostic protocols. In 2024-2026, 1300 participants were enrolled in the Ixodes persulcatus-endemic Almaty and Jetisu regions and the non-endemic Zhambyl and Turkistan regions, across diverse clinical and tick-exposure groups. All sera were screened for IgM and IgG to both pathogens by multi-antigen protein arrays, w

Public awareness of alpha-gal syndrome and tick bite prevention practices, United States, Fall 2023.

Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a unique non-infectious tickborne disease that can develop after a tick bite. AGS can cause severe allergic symptoms (when patients are exposed to alpha-gal) and be challenging for patients to manage because alpha-gal is found in mammalian meat, dairy, and some non-food products. We sought to understand public awareness of AGS, especially relative to other tickborne diseases. We used a 2023 nationally representative survey of adults to investigate public awareness of AGS in the United States and found that knowledge was very low, with 70% of respondents having no pr

Tick-borne diseases in French Guiana: A comprehensive review pinpointing differences from mainland France.

French Guiana (FG), an Amazonian French territory, represents a unique ecological and epidemiological setting for tick-borne diseases (TBDs). In contrast to mainland France, where TBDs are well-documented, data from FG remain scarce. We carried out a systematic review using the PRISMA criteria for our search of the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SciELO data bases. We identified 68 articles, of which 43 met our inclusion criteria. Data from FG were compared with those originating from mainland France. Albeit highly prevalent in Europe, and notwithstanding detection of a distinct Borrelia species in

Bos indicus cattle resistant to digital dermatitis exhibit a balanced proinflammatory cytokine response upon exposure to Treponema phagedenis in contrast to Bos taurus cattle.

Bovine digital dermatitis (BDD) is a globally distributed infectious hoof disease that negatively impacts the wellbeing and productivity of the affected animal. Treponema species and in particular Treponema phagedenis are the microbes strongly associated with the disease. Recently, it has been reported that Bos indicus cattle are more resistant to BDD and to the colonization by Treponema phagedenis in contrast to many Bos taurus breeds. This study investigated whether Bos indicus mount a different immune response to Treponema phagedenis compared with Bos taurus cattle, to better understand the

Immune-inflammatory profiles, coronary artery disease, and peripheral artery disease in people with HIV.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: People with HIV (PWH) have high risk of coronary (CAD) and peripheral (PAD) artery disease independent of traditional risk factors. Single immune-inflammatory biomarkers provide limited insight into disease risk and phenotypes, whereas integrative profiling may reveal novel mechanisms. Here we investigated associations between immune-inflammatory profiles, CAD, and PAD in PWH. METHODS: We included PWH from the Copenhagen Comorbidity in HIV Infection (COCOMO) Study with undetectable HIV RNA and measurements of 25 immune-inflammatory biomarkers. Participants underwent coron

Enhancing medical students' self-assessed competence in sexually transmitted infections: outcomes of an interdisciplinary workshop on syphilis, stigmatization and sexual history-taking.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly syphilis, continue to pose a significant public health problem. In addition to medical expertise, communication skills - especially when taking a sexual history - are crucial for providing adequate patient care. Previous studies have shown that medical students often feel uncomfortable and inadequately prepared to take a sexual history. METHODS: A pre-post evaluation was conducted as part of a STI workshop for medical students (n = 33). The interdisciplinary workshop consisted of dermatological components (epidemiology, clinical

One Health genomic surveillance of ticks found on community-dwelling non-human 'farm' animals to identify microbes associated with tick borne illnesses in Eastern Ontario.

Companion animals, such as dogs and cats, and wildlife are recognized as sentinel species in One Health surveillance due to periodic exposure to ticks and infection by tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). Surveillance of this type is a strategy that captures a broad range of genetic, immunological, and behavioral factors that affect tick and disease dynamics. In contrast, non-human animals (hereafter referred to as 'animals') that are traditionally farmed for their meat and other products have been largely overlooked as sentinel species. Community-dwelling farm sanctuary residents, such as cattle, pig

Atypical Lyme Neuroborreliosis Presenting With Ventriculitis and Cerebritis: A Case Report.

Lyme neuroborreliosis is a neurological manifestation of infection by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and most commonly presents with lymphocytic meningitis, cranial neuropathy, or painful radiculitis. Central nervous system parenchymal involvement is uncommon, and ventriculitis is rarely reported. We describe a man in his late 70s who presented with acute confusion, dysarthria, and left-sided weakness following several days of severe lower-limb pain and progressive mobility impairment. His neurological status rapidly deteriorated, with secondary seizures requiring invasive mechanical ventilat

Glutamine from plasma-like medium fuels nitrogen metabolism and influences proliferation in Leptospira interrogans.

Leptospirosis, caused by pathogenic Leptospira spp. such as L. interrogans, is a bacterial zoonosis of increasing prevalence with no consistently effective treatments in severe cases. We sought to characterize metabolic mechanisms that support L. interrogans infection, with the ultimate goal of revealing unexplored therapeutic opportunities. We first established and validated a culture medium, which we refer to as supplemented Human Plasma-Like Medium (sHPLM). sHPLM more closely resembles the physiological environment of the human host than standard culture media, such as the EMJH (Ellinghause

Barriers to entry: A participatory science study of tick identification, monitoring, and physical barriers to reduce tick bites on horses.

Equine tick-borne diseases pose increasing challenges due to climate change and expanding tick geographical ranges. With no vaccines available for Lyme disease or equine anaplasmosis in horses, tick bite prevention remains the primary control method. This two-year study evaluated tick species composition on horses in Pennsylvania and assessed the effectiveness of physical barriers for tick prevention through community-based participatory research. The study engaged horse owners as research partners. Year 1 (2022) established baseline tick surveillance across 45 participants with 60 horses, con
