AIMS: To determine whether macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) levels were increased in sera of the patients with iridocyclitis.
METHODS: Sera were obtained from 41 patients with acute iridocyclitis, 13 patients with chronic iridocyclitis, and 44 healthy control subjects. MIF levels were determined by a human MIF ELISA.
RESULTS: The average levels of MIF in the sera of patients with both acute and chronic iridocyclitis were significantly higher than that of healthy subjects.

The authors report a case of presumed idiopathic chronic iridocyclitis in which an intraocular foreign body (IOFB) was finally identified. There was no history of prior eye trauma. Ophthalmologic and laboratory evaluations were inconclusive. Seven months following unsuccessful medical treatment of the iritis and given the patient's occupational history, a skull x-ray was performed followed by computed tomography of the orbits. This study was carried out between January and December 1992 at the Istanbul Leprosy Hospital. Seven hundred and eleven leprosy patients were evaluated according to their age, gender and type of disease and disability according to the WHO disability grading system (1980). AIM: The histopathological features of the iris in leprosy were studied by light microscopy.
METHOD: Formalin fixed and paraffin embedded iris tissue excised during cataract surgery from 20 leprosy patients were sectioned and studied with haematoxylin and eosin stain and modified Fite Faraco's stain for acid fast bacilli (AFB).

Chronic iridocyclitis (CI) is among the most important extra-articular manifestations of juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) and is most often observed in young girls with pauciarticular JCA and circulating antinuclear antibodies (ANAs). Thirty patients with cystoid macular oedema secondary to chronic iridocyclitis were enrolled in a two period, prospective, randomised, double masked, crossover study that compared sustained release acetazolamide (500 mg twice a day) with a placebo to measure the effects on the reduction of cystoid macular oedema and improvement of visual acuity. A total of 94 patients with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) was tested for HLA class I by serology and for class II by RFLP typing. The human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) causes exanthem subitum. Moreover it can provoke a large scale of different other clinical symptoms. The life-long persistence of human herpes viruses is well known (HSV 1 and 2, VZV, CMV, EBV). For the HHV-6 we have described here for the first time the onset/reactivation of juvenile chronic arthritis (jcA) and chronic iridocyclitis as chronically active and persistent infection in two children of school age.

Juvenile chronic arthritis is a heterogenous disease with an ill-defined pathogenesis. In our study, synovial fluid (SF) and peripheral blood (PB) of 70 children with oligoarthritis were investigated; bacteria-specific lymphocyte proliferation and antibodies to arthritogenic bacteria were determined. PURPOSE: The authors studied the safety of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with uveitis.
METHODS: The authors prospectively randomized 26 patients with chronic iridocyclitis (22 patients) or pars planitis (4 patients) to undergo IOL implantation or no IOL implantation at the time of cataract surgery.
RESULTS: There was no statistical difference in visual acuity results at 1 year between the two groups. There was a trend toward better visual acuity in patients with chronic iridocyclitis without IOLs. Cocoon-like dense fibrous membranes enveloped the IOL in two patients.
