The mean level of circulating immune complexes (CIC) in 24 uveitic patients determined by PEG deposition with the biochemical analyzor was found to be 28.458 +/- 7.796, in contrast to the value of 14.499 +/- 6.194 in the control group. The CIC level in acute iridocyclitis and panuveitis was significantly elevated compared with those in other types of uveitis. The results again demonstrated that most cases of uveitis, especially those of unknown origin, were related with immune complexes, and changes in the level of CIC could also be an indicator of therapeutic effects.

To determine whether genetic markers for chronic iridocyclitis could be identified, we used both serologic and oligonucleotide dot blot techniques to characterize immunogenetically 164 children with early-onset pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. BACKGROUND: Two cases of sympathetic ophthalmia occurring after noncontact neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) cyclotherapy have previously been reported. In each case, the patient had undergone filtering surgery in the exciting eye. Although in each case Nd:YAG cyclotherapy was the last surgery performed, the inciting event of sympathetic ophthalmia was unclear.

We present our findings in 14 patients with a serologically verified diagnosis of ocular syphilis. Although most patients had iridocyclitis, other ocular findings included episcleritis, scleritis, vitritis, retinitis, papillitis, panuveitis, cystoid macular edema, and retinal detachment. At the Uveitis Clinic of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Escola Paulista de Medicina, São Paulo, Brazil, Behçet's disease was diagnosed in 49 patients, representing 2.0% of the total uveitis cases attended during the 16-year period from February 1974 to June 1990. The Herpetic Eye Disease Study (HEDS) includes three double-masked, placebo-controlled clinical trials for potentially blinding herpes simplex virus (HSV) eye infections. Forty-eight cases of the Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) syndrome occurring in patients residing in southern California were reviewed. Thirty-six patients were Hispanic and 12 of other racial groups. We report a follow-up after 25 years of a patient with a congenital bilateral ocular toxoplasmosis who developed Fuchs's heterochromic cyclitis in her left eye. Whether Toxoplasma gondii can cause the development of Fuchs's heterochromic cyclitis, as our case suggests, or whether the iridocyclitis is a secondary ocular response to other agents, is not yet clear.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) in aqueous humor from patients with various uveitis syndromes was analyzed using a number of immunologic techniques.
