BACKGROUND: A case report of recurrent unilateral granulomatous iridocyclitis with ocular hypertension without retinitis caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) in an immunocompetent patient.
METHODS: Aqueous humor was analysed by multiplex PCR to detect viral DNA, and real-time PCR was used to evaluate virus copies before and after anti-virus treatments. Inflammation of the anterior chamber was evaluated by a laser flare photometry.
RESULTS: Genomic DNA of CMV - but not of other herpes viruses - was detected in the aqueous humor. Quantitative real-time PCR revealed 2.3 x 10(5) copies/ml of CMV DNA

OBJECTIVE: To obtain diagnostic guidelines of Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis (FHC) in the absence of heterochromia using Bayesian methods.
METHODS: The pre-test and post-test likelihood that a certain patient without heterochromia (but with other characteristic symptoms of the disease such as iris nodules, cataracts, glaucoma or vitritis) has FCH, was assessed by the Bayes' theorem for conditioned likelihood. The prevalence values of FCH and the presentation rate of symptoms in FCH and in other forms of anterior uveitis were obtained from published literature data.
RESULTS: In the absence of

Cysticercosis in anterior chamber (AC) is rarer than in other ocular sites. And it is usually associated with plastic iridocyclitis. We report herein a case of a live cyst in the AC. The cyst was removed intact through limbal incision by visco expression technique. Histopathology confirmed cysticercosis cellulosae as the infecting agent. Timely removal of cyst can save the eye from severe plastic iritis.

Behçet's syndrome (BS; Adamantiades syndrome) is the association of the triple symptom complex of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) with genital ulceration, and eye disease (especially iridocyclitis) though a number of other systemic manifestations may also be seen. BS mainly affects young adult males, and there is an association with HLA-B5 and HLA-B51 (B5101). Features such as arthralgia and leucocytoclastic vasculitis suggest an immune-complex mediated basis, which is supported by finding circulating immune complexes and, although the antigen responsible is unidentified, heat shock protei

In this case report we describe for the first time an association between autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and uveitis, without any doubts about other possible etiologies, such as HCV, since all the old reports describe the association of AIH with iridocyclitis before tests for HCV-related hepatitis could be available. A 38-year-old businessman with abnormal liver function tests and hyperemia of the bulbar conjunctiva was admitted to the hospital. Six years before admission, the patient presented with persistent fever, arthralgias, conjunctival hyperemia, leukocytosis and increased ESR, referred to

Endogenous endophthalmitis with subretinal abscess is an extremely uncommon complication following dental procedures. An unsuspected source of infection or misdiagnosis of the condition as iridocyclitis may result in inadequate or delayed treatment leading to severe visual impairment. A high index of suspicion is required for accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment. A 49-year-old man was found to have endophthalmitis in his right eye after treatment of gingival abscess. Ophthalmoscopic examination revealed multiple septic emboli and a 4-disc diameter sized subretinal abscess in his retina. No

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sweet's syndrome (SS) is a severe dermatosis that may be an extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Worldwide, 35 cases of SS associated with IBD have been reported. We present the first case of severe, recurrent SS in combination with amebic infection and ulcerative colitis complicated with multiple other extraintestinal manifestations.
METHODS: Disease course was monitored by serum YKL-40 and C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell count, albumin and the Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index (SSCAI). The amebic infection was diagnosed by direc

Behçet's disease is a chronic, relapsing vasculitis that can affect most organ systems. The prevalence varies geographically, and the disease is more common in countries along the ancient Silk Road, including Italy, Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, Korea and Japan. Behçet's is more common in men than in women, and typically affects young adults. The classic finding in Behçet's patients is the presence of recurrent mucocutaneous ulcers, and oral aphthous ulcerations are usually the initial symptom. Other manifestations include genital ulcers, skin lesions, vascular, neurological, arti
