AIMS: To investigate the current causes and outcomes of paediatric ocular trauma.
METHODS: A prospective observational study of all children admitted to hospital with ocular trauma in Scotland over a 1 year period.

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of a small scleral flap sutured with 10-0 polyglactin (Vicryl).
METHODS: One hundred and sixty-five eyes underwent clear cornea punch trabeculectomy under a 5.0 mm wide scleral flap that was closed with two 10-0 Vicryl sutures after phacoemulsification and insertion of a single-piece PMMA lens. Complications, tonometric and visual results were assessed at regular intervals. Statistical analysis was by Fisher's exact test.
RESULTS: One hundred eyes that were followed for 1 year showed a mean intraocular pressure (IOP) of 14.7 mmHg, representing a fall of 36.

PURPOSE: The evaluation of postoperative results and complications after traumatic cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty two eyes of 41 patients (31 male and 10 female) aged from 10 to 66 years (mean 37.8) with traumatic cataract were the subject of our study. They were operated on between 1996 and 1997. A penetrating injury in 33 eyes (78.6%) and blunt trauma in 9 eyes (21.4%) caused the cataract. PURPOSE: To report the electron microscopic findings on an explanted intraocular lens in a patient with the uveitis, glaucoma, hyphaema syndrome.
METHODS: Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were undertaken on a coccoon of cellular material from the tip of the intraocular lens haptic.
RESULTS: Scanning electron micrographs showed densely packed coccoid-like structures on the haptic surface. By transmission electron microscopy these structures proved to be melanosomes.

A clinical audit was conducted for a 4-year period at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Ophthalmology Department in which 61 eyes of adult patients with primary glaucoma underwent trabeculectomies without antimetabolites. A survey was undertaken of all patients attending the Eye Casualty Department at Waterford Regional Hospital with sports injuries in the twelve-month period 1st January 1995 to 31st December 1995. "Octopus" elasticated straps are a common cause of severe accidental eye injuries, which we believe are largely preventable. In a retrospective study (January 1990 to August 1996), we identified 42 patients with such injuries severe enough to warrant admission to hospital. The injuries included hyphaema, vitreous haemorrhage, retinal detachment, and choroid and globe rupture, with 28% (12/42) of the injuries resulting in permanent visual loss. We believe octopus straps should not be available for sale in their current form.

BACKGROUND: We wanted to evaluate whether intracameral injection of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is useful in managing traumatic hyphaema.
METHODS: Two eyes with total hyphaema after a severe penetrating injury were treated with a single intracameral injection of 25 micrograms of tPA 5 and 14 days after the injury, respectively.
RESULTS: Most of the blood coagulum dissolved within 24 h, and in one of the two eyes the intraocular pressure decreased from 45 to 8 mmHg. The other eye was hypotonic. No re-bleeding or complications related to the use of tPA were noticed.
