A 60-year-old man presented with a unilateral mass involving the iris and ciliary body associated with iridocyclitis, which was refractive to both topical and systemic corticosteroid therapy. After a systemic work-up was negative, anterior chamber paracentesis and transcorneal biopsy were performed to rule out malignant melanoma and other tumors. The lesion proved to be an inflammatory lymphoid process, which resolved when systemic propranolol administration was withdrawn. Evidence for the possible role of propranolol in the induction of an intraocular inflammatory pseudotumor is presented.

In 12 consecutive cases of epithelial ingrowth operated on during the past 50 months, therapy included photocoagulation on the iris followed by excision of involved iris tissue and vitreous gel by means of instruments designed for vitreous surgery. This paper described the first animal model of a virally induced uveal melanoma. Tumors developed following the injection of an RNA tumor virus, i.e., Gardner strain feline sarcoma virus, into the anterior chamber of newborn kittens. Histologically, the tumors were found to be iris and ciliary body melanomas, many of which showed invasion. The histology and ultrastructure of those tumors are described.

A 29-year-old woman had a pigmented ciliary body mass that extended through the iris into the anterior chamber. On the basis of clinical findings and ancillary diagnostic studies, the clinical diagnosis was malignant melanoma of the ciliary body. The enucleated eye showed the tumor to be composed of cells identical to those of a melanocytoma of the optic disk.

Rapid intraoperative choroidal effusion and flattening of the anterior chamber occurred during glaucoma filtering surgery in four young patients with prominent episcleral vessels, elevated episcleral venous pressure, and advanced open-angle glaucoma. Two of these four patients had Sturge-Weber syndrome. Iris angiograms were performed in 17 cases of uveal malignant melanoma, which were later histologically confirmed. In those 12 patients in whom the tumour was confined to the choroid, the angiograms revealed a punctate leakage of dye at the pupillary margin, a delayed filling of the vessels in certain areas and definite new vessel formation corresponding to rubeosis iridis. Three patients who developed epithelial invasion of the anterior chamber were treated by radical anterior segment surgery.
