Massive anterior chamber involvement after intra-arterial chemotherapy for retinoblastoma: ultrasound biomicroscopy and histopathology.

This case report highlights the usefulness of Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) in a case of retinoblastoma which showed massive anterior chamber involvement after treatment with intra-arterial chemotherapy. UBM was used to document tumour pseudohypopion, cells in the aqueous humor, implanted clusters of cells on the corneal endothelium, iris nodules, lens capsule deposits and ciliary body invasion. The UBM data, compared with the histopathologic analysis, performed on eye tissue, after enucleation of the affected eye, revealed a significant concordance. UBM may represent an important diagnostic

Anterior segment invasion in retinoblastoma: is it a risk factor for extraocular relapse?

We report a retrospective review of patients with retinoblastoma and anterior segment invasion (ASI) as risk factors for extraocular relapse. Only those with ASI combined with postlaminar optic nerve invasion and/or scleral invasion received adjuvant chemotherapy and those with tumor at the resection margin received orbital radiotherapy. Those with only uveal invasion did not receive adjuvant therapy. Of 479 evaluable patients, 67 patients had pathologically confirmed ASI, including 52 with anterior chamber invasion and 47 with iris or ciliary body invasion. ASI occurred with other pathology r

Green tea extract treatment alleviates ocular inflammation in a rat model of endotoxin-induced uveitis.

Green tea extract (GTE) ingested by rats exerted anti-oxidative activities in various ocular tissues as shown in our previous studies. The present work investigated anti-inflammatory effects of GTE on endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU). EIU was generated in adult rats by a footpad injection of 1 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Oral administration of GTE (550 mg/kg) was given one, two or four times after LPS injection. Twenty-four hours later, LPS produced severe hyperemia and edema in the iris. Immunocytochemical examinations showed an accumulation of infiltrating cells in the aqueous humor that

Medulloepithelioma: A triad of clinical features.

BACKGROUND: Intraocular medulloepithelioma arises from the primitive medullary epithelium and is diagnosed at a median age of five years. This tumor most commonly appears as a white, gray, or yellow-colored ciliary body tumor. The growth of medulloepithelioma is slow and it is locally invasive. Poor vision and pain are the most common presenting symptoms. The most common clinical signs include cyst or mass in iris, anterior chamber or ciliary body, glaucoma, and cataract. CASE: A 22-month-old Caucasian female twin presented with leukocoria and poor vision in OS. Examination revealed normal fi

Secondary glaucoma associated with bilateral complete ring cysts of the ciliary body.

PURPOSE: To report a case of acute glaucoma due to complete ring cyst of the ciliary body. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 33-year-old woman experienced blurred vision in her left eye. Intraocular pressure of the left eye was elevated accompanied with a very shallow anterior chamber. Anterior segment-optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy detected ring-shaped ciliary masses in the both eyes. Myopic change and contact between the ciliary mass and lens in the left eye suggested the presence of aqueous misdirection resulting in forward displacement of the lens-iris diaphragm. Because

Clinical treatment and prognostic observation for different pathological infiltrations in 537 patients with unilateral retinoblastoma.

BACKGROUND: The use of post-enucleation adjuvant therapy to decrease the extraocular relapse rate is frequently considered, but there is much controversy about the indications for adjuvant therapy. The aim of this retrospective study was to observe the treatment and prognosis for different degrees of invasion of eye tissue in retinoblastoma (RB) and identify the indications for post-enucleation adjuvant therapy. METHODS: We recruited 537 children who had been diagnosed with unilateral RB and had received enucleation from January 2006 to December 2012 in our hospital, and divided them into thr

High-risk histomorphological features in retinoblastoma and their association with p53 expression: An Indian experience.

Introduction: Histopathological features in retinoblastoma are considered high-risk factors (HRF) for tumor progression and metastasis, thus their presence becomes an indication for adjuvant chemotherapy. Present study was undertaken to evaluate the incidence of HRF in retinoblastoma and to correlate them with p53 expression. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study where 17 diagnosed cases of retinoblastoma were included. Cases were re-evaluated for various histomorphological parameters. Immuno-histochemical analysis was done with p53 antibody by Streptavidin biotin method. Resul

[Surgical management of a recurrent iris stromal cyst].

INTRODUCTION: Cysts of the iris stroma may be congenital or acquired. They are rare tumors of the anterior segment. We describe the case of a 51-year-old patient presenting with a recurrent iris stromal cyst. OBSERVATION: The patient presented emergently for sudden recurrence of an iris stromal cyst with decreased visual acuity. He had already undergone needle aspiration and argon laser photocoagulation of the cyst 1 year previously. A Ultrasound BioMicroscopy (UBM) examination was performed to rule out any malignant tumor of the iris or ciliary body. Surgical treatment consisted of complete

Amelioration of endotoxin-induced uveitis treated with an IκB kinase β inhibitor in rats.

PURPOSE: Endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) is an animal model for acute ocular inflammation. Several substances play major roles in the development of inflammatory changes in EIU, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6. These inflammatory cytokines trigger the degradation of IκB by activating IκB kinases (IKKs). Released nuclear factor kappaB (NFκB) subsequently translocates to the nucleus, where NFκB expresses its proinflammatory function. IMD-0354, N-(3,5-Bis-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzamide, selectively inhibits IKKβ, particularly when induc
