In this study anti-inflammatory effects of the alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) on ocular inflammation caused by extracapsular lens extraction (ECLE) have been investigated and the potential mechanism of an anti-inflammatory effect is discussed. BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that clinical features at presentation, in retinoblastoma patients, like glaucoma and neovascularization of iris are associated with a higher incidence of high risk histopathology findings (HRF) in enucleated eyes. PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant, multisystem disorder that also effects the eye. Herein, we aimed to investigate the posterior iris surface and ciliary body morphology of NF1 patients by ultrasonic biomicroscopy (UB).

An 11-year-old boy presented with a mid-zonal pigment epithelial iris cyst. The cyst progressed relentlessly, ultimately leading to enucleation of the eye 4 years after presentation. Histopathology revealed a ciliary body schwannoma filling the anterior chamber and a small, incidental noncontiguous ciliary body melanoma. Vision loss, pupil distortion, and relentless growth despite complete cyst deflation following aspiration were clues for the tumor-induced nature of the visible cyst.

Ocular melanomas correspond to 5% of all melanomas and 85% of them have its origin in the uveal tract. Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor in the adult. In this article, a case of uveal melanoma in a 31 year-old female patient, with photopsia, hyperemia and low visual acuity in the left eye with evolution of 4 months is presented.
