PURPOSE: To determine if factors present in the aqueous humor (AH) protect the corneal endothelium from apoptosis.
METHODS: Mouse and human corneal endothelial cells were cultured in vitro, and apoptosis was induced by nutrient deprivation. AH and supernatant from iris/ciliary body (I/CB) cell cultures were tested for their effect on corneal endothelial cell apoptosis. The effect of I/CB supernatant on Fas, Bax, and Bcl-2 gene transcription was evaluated by Northern blotting. I/CB supernatant was subjected to proteinase analysis to identify the apoptosis inhibitory factor(s).

UBM presents us with a new method of imaging the anterior segment of the eye at high resolution. Its strengths lie in its ability to produce cross-sections of the living eye at microscopic resolution without violating the integrity of the globe. Between 1989 and 1995 nine Great Danes were presented to the small animal clinic of the University of Zurich Teaching Hospital with glaucoma and multiple cysts in the anterior and posterior chamber. PURPOSE: To report a 2 1/2-year-old boy who had papillary adenocarcinoma of the ciliary body that simulated retinoblastoma.
METHOD: Initially treated for congenital glaucoma, the patient was referred with a white mass involving the iris, chamber angle, and ciliary body.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and histopathologic findings of a child with congenital glaucoma who developed cystic epithelial ingrowth after goniotomy.
METHODS: A five-month-old boy was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma due to Axenfeld syndrome. Goniotomy was performed immediately after the clinical diagnosis in his left eye. Non-rubeotic angle-closure glaucoma associated with ciliary medulloepithelioma was reported in a 3-year-old boy. OBJECTIVE: To describe plateau iris syndrome associated with multiple neuroepithelial cysts of the pars plicata.
METHODS: Case reports of 3 patients with plateau iris syndrome who were found to have multiple bilateral ciliary body cysts on ultrasound biomicroscopic examination.
RESULTS: Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed classic features of plateau iris syndrome in each patient but also showed multiple neuroepithelial cysts of the ciliary body in each eye.
CONCLUSION: Plateau iris syndrome may be associated with multiple ciliary body cysts.

A transcleral inoculation of 15x10(6) melanocytes of the B16-F10 and G-361 cell lines was carried out in the anterior chamber of one eye in New Zealand white rabbits. Iris melanomas are less likely to metastasize than ciliary body or choroidal melanomas. In order to study this difference in metastatic rate, we developed a murine model of anterior chamber (AC) and posterior compartment (PC) melanoma. Ultrasound biomicroscopy is a new imaging technology that uses high-frequency ultrasound and thus allows depiction of the anterior portion of the globe in microscopic resolution. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) allows high-resolution imaging of the anterior segment due to ultrasound transducers between 50 and 100 MHz. At present stage of experience, mainly analysis of iris and ciliary body structures seem to be clinically rewarding. This is demonstrated by two similar looking tumors, involving the chamber angle. By means of UBM it was possible to differentiate between cystic and solid growths and to assess tumor extensions.

In a 3-year retrospective study, 28 dogs were determined to have uveal cysts arising from either the ciliary body or the iris or free-floating in the anterior chamber. Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and Boston Terriers were represented more than other breeds. Mean age of cyst development was 7.0 years in Golden Retrievers, 9.1 years in Labrador Retrievers, and 6.8 years in Boston Terriers. There was no sex predilection in any breed. Evidence of associated ocular lesions, other than visual impairment in 1 Boston Terrier, was not noticed.

Two patients developed cataract following iridocyclectomy for iris melanoma invading the angle. Although several clock hours of zonular fibers had been surgically resected, the use of a continuous, circular capsulorhexis followed by phacoemulsification maintained the integrity of the anterior capsular margin and allowed for stable "in-the-bag" placement of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL). Continuous, circular capsulorhexis is the optimal anterior capsulectomy procedure, minimizing the incidence of radial tears and the risk of subsequent PC-IOL decentration.

From 1980 to 1990, 32 consecutive patients with progressive cystic or diffuse epithelial ingrowth of the anterior chamber were treated successfully with block excision.
