The enigma of subnormal vision in persistent pupillary membrane.

Persistent pupillary membrane (PPM) is a common congenital anomaly of the eye, representing the remnants of tunica vasculosa lentis. It is often detected as an incidental finding upon examination. The presentation may vary from being an insignificant strand of iris to a hyperplastic dense membrane, with or without adhesions to the surrounding structures, which notably obscures the visual axis. When present as an isolated pathology, these patients are often asymptomatic. However, some patients with isolated PPM do present with poor visual acuity or subnormal quality of vision. The severity of t

Long term surgical outcome for persistent pupillary membranes with associated ocular abnormalities: a retrospective case series study.

BACKGROUND: Deprivation amblyopia is a great concern in hyperplastic persistent pupillary membranes (PPM) which blocked visual axis. Other ocular abnormality may accompany and further hinder the visual development of the infants. We evaluate the long-term visual prognosis and complications in patients with dense PPM and other associated abnormalities treated with early surgical intervention and timely visual rehabilitation. METHODS: Medical records of patients with surgical removal of PPM from 2000 to 2020 and also receiving visual rehabilitation were retrospectively reviewed. Besides visual

Outcomes after surgical removal of anterior epi-capsular plaque associated with persistent pupillary membranes in children.

INTRODUCTION: Anteriorepi-capsular plaque (ACP) is usually eccentric and is associated with persistent iris strands arising from the collarette. Outcomes of lens preserving ACP peeling along with removal of persistent pupillary membrane (PPM) strands have seldom been reported with only a few cases within some case series appearing in the literature. Herein we aim to report outcome after surgical removal of ACP associated with PPM in children. METHODS: Research was done in three different Institutes. Charts were reviewed for all children who had undergone ACP removal surgery from 2010. Age at

A safe treatment for congenital fibrovascular pupillary membrane.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical features and management of fibrovascular pupillary membrane. METHODS: Four patients with congenital fibrovascular pupillary membrane were recruited. Comprehensively, ophthalmic examinations were performed. Peripheral iridectomy was performed to create a tunnel for blunt dissection of adhesion between the membrane and the lens capsule. Bipolar radiofrequency diathermy was then used to cut the membrane utilizing its coagulation effect. RESULTS: All four patients received uneventful membranectomy surgeries. The follow-up duration r

LIP-TO-LID TRANSPOSITION AND HUSBANDRY MANAGEMENT FOR SEVERE BILATERAL EYELID COLOBOMA IN THREE SNOW LEOPARDS (PANTHERA UNCIA).

Three sibling snow leopard (Panthera uncia) cubs were evaluated shortly after birth and found to have bilateral eyelid colobomas involving >50% of the upper central and lateral lid margins. The cubs also had iris to cornea persistent pupillary membranes and developed varying degrees of keratitis caused by trichiasis and exposure. No fundic abnormalities were noted. Given the severity of the defects an extensive surgical correction was required. Prior to surgical correction, the cubs were separated from the dam daily and a human-animal socialization plan was enacted to prepare the cubs for the

A case of unusual persistent pupillary membrane with total anterior capsular pigmentation.

A 5-year-old castrated male poodle presented with blindness. Ophthalmic examinations including slit-lamp biomicroscopy, tonometry, ultrasonography, and electroretinography were performed. The anterior lens capsule of the right eye (OD) was totally pigmented, with persistent pupillary membranes (PPMs). Ultrasonography of the same eye showed severe lens atrophy and retinal detachment. Electroretinography revealed flat a- and b-waves in OD, but normal amplitudes in the left eye (OS). No ocular defects were detected in OS except mature cataract. In this case, it was determined that hypermature cat

Congenital Microphthalmic Syndrome in a Swine.

A 17-week-old crossbred finishing pig was presented for lameness of approximately one week. Clinical evaluation, including ophthalmologic examination, revealed ataxia, partial flaccid paresis of the pelvic limbs, skin lesions at feet and claws, and severely reduced vision/blindness. Both eyes had multiple persistent pupillary membranes (iris-to-iris and iris-to-lens) and hypermature cataracts. Histopathological examination of the eyes revealed microphthalmia, microphakia with cataract formation, myovascularised membrane in the vitreous, retinal detachment, and retinal dysplasia. A rare case of persistent pupillary membrane: Case-based approach and management.

Persistent pupillary membranes (PPMs) are a common congenital anomaly seen in 95% of neonates. Extensive PPMs, occluding the visual axis and resulting in reduced visual acuity, are relatively uncommon. We describe a case of bilateral total PPM in a 36-year-old female who presented with complaints of blurred vision in both the eyes. Dense pupillary membranes obscuring the visual axis need early surgical treatment. It is essential that the lens status remains clear along the visual axis both before and after pupilloplasty.
