Brainstem auditory evoked responses and ophthalmic findings in llamas and alpacas in Eastern Canada.

Seventeen llamas and 23 alpacas of various coat and iris colors were evaluated for: (1) deafness by using brainstem auditory evoked response testing; and (2) for ocular abnormalities via complete ophthalmic examination. No animals were deaf. The most common ocular abnormalities noted were iris-to-iris persistent pupillary membranes and incipient cataracts.

Extensive persistent pupillary membranes: conservative management.

Extensive persistent pupillary membranes (PPMS) may appear to occlude the pupil so completely as to preclude useful vision. They often motivate aggressive interventions. We present a 6-year-old girl with bilateral extensive densely pigmented pupillary membranes in whom good vision was obtained without pharmacologic, laser, or surgical intervention. There was associated ametropic amblyopia and exotropia in the patient, which were effectively treated with spectacles and occlusion therapy, with the patient responding conventionally. In view of our findings, we recommend a trial of conservative ma

Laser and surgical management of hyperplastic persistent pupillary membrane.

Two patients (50 and 14 years old) presented with extensive hyperplastic pupillary membranes and significant reduction of visual acuity. The patients were treated by surgical excision and sectioning of the membrane using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Although both of the modalities achieved good surgical and functional results, laser treatment should be preferred over surgery because of potential complications associated with the latter.

Pars plana capsulovitrectomy for posterior capsular opacification in children.

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is a common complication following cataract surgery in the pediatric age group. Despite various techniques to prevent its occurrence, cases often require postoperative Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. Cases with PCO are described in which the Nd:YAG laser was ineffective in clearing the visual axis and pars plana capsulovitrectomy was performed to penetrate the thick pupillary membranes.

[Nd: YAG laser therapy for persistent pupillary membranes].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical effects and surgical techniques of Neodymium-yttrium, aluminum, garnet(Nd: YAG) laser therapy for persistent pupillary membranes. METHODS: Twenty-five patients (26 eyes) with persistent pupillary membranes were suffered to resection membranes. The energy of laser was adjusted according to the thickness and density of the membranes. The laser with the best cutting effects and lowest energy was selected to resection. All patients were followed up for 3 - 6 months after the operation. RESULTS: All patients were cured after one laser therapy. The corrected visua

Persistent hyperplastic tunica vasculosa lentis and persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHTVL/PHPV) in two cats.

Two domestic shorthair cats (6 and 9 months old) were presented for examination of ocular opacities. One cat had bilateral persistent pupillary membranes, unilaterally accompanied by persistent hyperplastic tunica vasculosa lentis, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHTVL/PHPV), and cataract. The second cat had bilateral PHTVL/PHPV with dense white plaques in the posterior lens capsule and subcapsular cortex.

Fibrous congenital iris membranes with pupillary distortion.

BACKGROUND: In 1986 Cibis and associates described 2 children with a new type of congenital pupillary-iris-lens membrane with goniodysgenesis that was unilateral, sporadic, and progressive. These membranes were different from the common congenital pupillary strands that extend from 1 portion of the iris collarette to another or from the iris collarette to a focal opacity on the anterior lens surface. They also differed from the stationary congenital hypertrophic pupillary membranes that partially occlude the pupil, originating from multiple sites on the iris collarette, but not attaching direc

[Hyperplastic persistent pupillary membrane--surgical procedure].

BACKGROUND: Persistent pupillary membranes are a common congenital anomaly seen in 95% of neonates. Extensive persistent pupillary membranes, occluding the visual axis and resulting in reduced visual acuity, are relatively uncommon. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old male infant was seen in our hospital with reduced visual acuity of his left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed a dense, extensive, persistent pupillary membrane associated with anterior polar cataract. We performed an excision of the pupillary membrane, lens aspiration of the lens material, posterior capsulorhexis, anterior vitrectomy an

Successful treatment of tractional corectopia using 2 mJ of energy with an Nd:YAG laser.

Although the Nd:YAG laser is most commonly used to perform posterior capsulotomies after cataract surgery, it has also been used to treat a variety of other anterior segment abnormalities including tractional corectopia, iridocorneal adhesions, persistent pupillary membranes, and posterior synechiae. Numerous reports on the use of the Nd:YAG laser to treat structures in the anterior segment have emphasized the need to use higher pulse energy for pupillary membranes, compared with the lower settings required for posterior capsulotomy. Steinert and Puliafito noted that single pulses of 4 to 12 m

Nd:YAG laser removal of pupillary membranes developed after ECCE with PC-IOL implantation.

PURPOSE: To define the frequency of development of pupillary membranes after ECCE with PC-IOL implantation, and to remove the pupillary membranes using the Nd:YAG laser. METHODS: From 400 patients who had undergone ECCE and were free from local or systemic illness affecting the blood-ocular barrier, 20 eyes developed pupillary membranes Nd:YAG laser was used to remove these pupillary membranes. RESULTS: The frequency of pupillary membranes was found to be 5% (9.8% in pex eyes and 3.3% to the non-pex eyes). Visual acuity improved in 17 eyes by 2 to 5 Snellen lines. No serious complications we

The complications of perfluoropropane gas use in complex retinal detachments.

BACKGROUND: Perfluoropropane (C3F8) is a valuable adjunct in the management of complex rhegmatogenous retinal detachments, and it has become the most commonly used perfluorocarbon gas. However, there have been few large reports about its complications. This retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the complications of the use of perfluoropropane gas. METHODS: Perfluoropropane gas was used in the repair of a complex retinal detachment in 157 consecutive eyes. Only eyes that had a follow-up of 6 months or greater were included. Any eyes that had undergone previous vitrectomy and vitreous

Surgical management for persistent pupillary membrane with vitreous scissors.

Persistent pupillary membranes are common congenital disorders. To reduce the surgical complications, we used vitreous scissors instead of conventionally used Vannas scissors to remove the membrane and reviewed the surgical results. Five eyes of 4 children with persistent pupillary membrane were treated by surgery. Through the 1.5 mm limbal incision, the membrane was removed by using vitreous scissors after intracameral sodium hyaluronate. After 22.6 months follow-up, all pupils of operated eyes were round and no complications associated with the surgery were found. Three eyes showed improved
