The relationship between different stages of diabetic retinopathy and levels of YKL-40 in aqueous humour and serum.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Since inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy, serum biomarkers and retinal imaging aimed at evaluating the presence of inflammation have emerged as useful tools to monitor the appearance and progression of diabetic retinopathy. BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the value of YKL-40 levels in patients with diabetes mellitus with different stages of diabetic retinopathy and without diabetic retinopathy, and to compare those findings with results from healthy individuals without diabetes mellitus. METHODS: This prospective cr

Characterization of Conjunctival Microflora and Antibiotic Sensitivity Patterns in Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery.

This study aims to characterize the conjunctival flora of patients scheduled for cataract surgery and determine the susceptibility profile of isolated bacteria to several commonly used topical antibiotics. Conjunctival swabs were taken from 44 consecutive patients (25 males, 19 females; mean age of 75.0 ± 12.6 years) who were scheduled for senile cataract surgery at two Italian centers before starting any prophylactic preoperative treatment. Swabs were processed for the detection of the microbial growth and for species identification. Selective culture media were used, and bacteria were identi

Hyperopia may exert a protective effect against senile cataracts: Evidence from a Mendelian randomization study.

Myopia has been extensively documented as a significant risk factor for cataracts; however, the relationship between hyperopia and cataract development remains poorly understood. Given the distinct refractive profiles of myopia and hyperopia, hyperopia may confer a protective effect against cataracts. In this study, we employed Mendelian randomization (MR) to examine the causal association between hyperopia and cataracts. A 2-sample MR framework was utilized to examine the causal relationship between hyperopia and cataracts, with multivariable MR implemented to account for potential confoundin

Effects of Rock Inhibitor (Y-27632) on the Corneal Endothelium in Dogs Undergoing Phacoemulsification: A Pilot Study.

Cataract is one of the most common ocular conditions in dogs, and phacoemulsification is the preferred therapeutic method among ophthalmologists. Of all postoperative complications, endothelial injuries stand out, potentially leading to permanent corneal decompensation and loss of transparency. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the ROCK inhibitor (Y-27632) on endothelial protection in dogs undergoing phacoemulsification. Twenty eyes of 10 dogs with bilateral senile cataracts were divided into two groups: Control Eyes (CE) (n = 10), which received balanced saline solution (BSS), and Tr

Exploring causal relationships between circulating micronutrients and age-related eye diseases: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: With the global population aging, age-related eye diseases (AREDs) such as senile cataract (SC), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy (DR) are becoming increasingly significant public health concerns. The rising prevalence of AREDs underscores the urgent need for effective prevention and treatment strategies. This study aimed to explore the causal relationships between circulating micronutrients (CMs) and AREDs. METHODS: A bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted using genetic variants as instrumental variab

Oxidation-Induced Mixed Disulfide and Cataract Formation: A Review.

The major function of eye lens is to transmit light onto retina and form an image. This relies on the crystallin proteins, which are tightly packed to achieve a high refractive index and transparency. The proteins are protected and maintained in a reduced state with intrinsic antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), and redox-regulating enzyme systems, such as thioltransferase to maintain the SH/-S-S-balance. When the protective systems are impaired or reduced due to aging, oxidative stress can lead to SH/S-S imbalance, protein modification, protein-protein aggregation and loss of transparency

Spontaneous lens absorption and empty capsular bag in hyper-mature senile cataract.

A male patient in his 60s presented with a rare form of hyper-mature senile cataract, characterised by an empty capsular bag in the left eye and diminished vision over 2 years. Initial visual acuity was 20/40 in the right eye and finger counting at one metre in the left eye. A slit lamp examination revealed pseudophakia in the right eye and a fibrosed lens capsule in the left eye. A dilated examination confirmed an empty capsular bag with a fibrosed capsule and normal fundus. Ultrasound findings were anechoic, and anterior segment optical coherence tomography showed an intact lens capsule. The

Improving ACS prediction in T2DM patients by addressing false records in electronic medical records using propensity score.

Our study aims to improve the prediction performance of machine learning (ML) models by addressing false records (i.e., false positive, false negative, or missingness) in binary categorical variables in electronic medical records (EMRs) using propensity score (PS). This study used the EMRs of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treated with basal insulin at a tertiary university hospital in South Korea. We expanded the definition of PS into the probability of having a record for a binary variable given covariates. We calculated PS for the binary categorical variables in their EMRs an

The Effects of Lutein-Containing Supplement Intake on Glycation Inhibition Among Diabetic Patients with Cataracts.

Glycation is known as an important factor inducing human diseases, including diabetic complications. As oxidative stress contributes to procedures of glycation, antioxidants may inhibit glycation and delay the progression of diabetic complications. Our previous investigation of human aqueous humor after the intake of a lutein-containing supplement demonstrated increases in antioxidative activities and decreases in peroxidative products. This study enrolled 25 patients with diabetes (DM group) and 100 age-matched controls. Aqueous humor samples were collected during cataract surgery before and

Exploiting autophagy and related pathways: pioneering new horizons in cataract therapy.

Autophagy is a critical catabolic pathway that facilitates the degradation of intracellular components through lysosomal activity, originally recognized for its role in nutrient recycling during starvation. Recent research has expanded our understanding of autophagy, revealing its involvement in various physiological processes essential for cellular, tissue, and organismal homeostasis. Dysregulation of autophagy has been linked to numerous diseases, including ocular conditions such as cataracts. In human lens fibers, autophagic vesicles containing mitochondria or mitochondrial fragments have b

Rapid contraction of the anterior capsule after phacoemulsification in uveitis: A case report.

RATIONALE: While capsular contraction syndrome (CCS) typically develops months after cataract surgery, its potential for rapid progression in uveitis patients remains poorly characterized. This case addresses the critical knowledge gap regarding ultra-early-onset CCS and its diagnostic challenges in inflammatory eye disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 63-year-old male with controlled uveitis reported rapidly worsening blurred vision (15 days postphacoemulsification) despite initially good postoperative visual acuity (0.4 at 1 week). The vision deteriorated to hand motion at 10 cm, unresponsive to an
